Grant Guest Art
My wife and I finally have the chance to do that we haven’t done since our son was born, take a whole week off and do things together as a family. During this week (Sunday the 11th through Friday the 16th), I’ll be posting awesome guest art and comics from other cool artists (not meaning that I think I’m cool or anything like that) whose work I admire and would love to share with you.
And last but certainly not least, enjoy some gorgeous guest art by awesome and most huggable Grant Gould. Please check out his blog for all his latest news, projects and artwork and say “Howdy” while you’re there!
eeeeeeee.e.e.e …
Stop that! That was back on Wednesday, and in a whole different comic!
Something to make me choke on my own drool…
Looking a bit more desperate for readerbase with each filler art…
“Desperate”? I’m taking a vacation this week and asked a few of my comic friends to either do a guest comic or a pin-up. I appreciate them helping me out and give them the freedom to work in their own style. If I were desperate for readers I wouldn’t tell you to take your opinion elsewhere and tell everyone who’ll listen to you.
Out. Of. Line.
Gee, I put down a pic of a sexy lady in a bikini and people blow up. What a surprise.
Riddle me this: Would you have reacted so strongly if the pic was simply the Wapsi gang cracking a joke instead?
My reaction is borne from the exceedingly common advertising ploy of putting a sexy woman all over a product to hide the fact that the product is very poor, and quite undeserving of it’s pricetag. It’s to the point that my instinctive reaction is to assume the item in question is not worth my time/money. And yet, if this trick didn’t work, and on a lot of people, it wouldn’t be used, would it?
You missed it, obviously. If you don’t have something nice to say, keep your mouth shut. This isn’t the venue for critiques or slams. Do it on your own website. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
See, that’s the thing, you call it an advertising ploy, when all that Paul did was ask a few friends to draw some guest art for the comic without restricting them to draw what they want. This artwork here is Grant Gould’s own idea, so there is NO advertising plot to it. Grant Gould wanted to draw this and thus it is drawn, it’s not like Paul actually said, “Eisu, draw a comic of Bud taking off her underwear, Grant, draw a sexy drawing of Monica in a skimpy bikini… I’ll get more visitors yet, MWAH HA HA HA HA!!”
All I got in my e-mail was Paul asking me nicely if I can spare some time to draw some guest art for the comic while he goes on a vacation and we friends of Paul, we agreed. There is NO advertising ploy and THAT’s the point.
All I can say is “wow”. I’ve never commented before even though I found Wapsi three years ago. Its a guest comic done out of the goodness of another artist’s heart for someone on vacation. The other artists could have said, “No I’m sorry…I’m really too busy with my own work.” But they didn’t, they provided a weeks worth of art so Paul could take a break with his wife without having to leave the strip un-updated the whole time. I aprreciate the fact that they took time from their own schedules to help Paul…I would hope people woul be so willing to help me if I took a vacation.
Zorlond said: Gee, I put down a pic of a sexy lady in a bikini and people blow up. What a surprise.
No, you libeled this strip, and the artist, and the guest artist.
I don’t understand how this is an advertising ploy? The vast majority of people who will be seeing it are the people who normally come here anyway. To be “come-on” type advertising, would it not have had to be displayed in other places besides here? If this picture had been put out on the web as representitive of the artwork here, then it would be misleading advertising, as you say, but that’s not the case.
You’re looking at these guest strips and pin-ups all wrong. The guy’s taking a deserved vacation to be with his family and is liked enough in the comic community for artists to offer their time, talent, and energy to fill the updates that otherwise wouldn’t be here this week.
Give him a break.
Wapsi, desperate for readerbase? Seriously.
Maybe next time you decide to get snarky, you should read the author’s comments. You might find out something. Like maybe the author’s on vacation, and this comic isn’t even his contribution.
I mean, OBVIOUSLY this has nothing to do with this particular strip, but . . . just as an example.
You’re criticising the comic for having a picture of a sexy lady in a bikini to try and lure in new readers?
You’re kina missing one of the main points of Wapsi Square and how it started. If you’re thinking that this is about the objectification of women wih large breasts, or using large breasts and sexy pictures to lure in fans then I don’t understand what you’re even doing here.
If it was a good joke, yes.
Say at the level of Tina and the sugar, last week.
You are mistaken if you believe you can nonchalantly accuse the artist of soliciting overtly sexual pix in order to “hide the fact that the product is very poor, and quite undeserving of it’s pricetag[your words]”, and not get a reaction like this. The comments forum is dominated by fans of the strip who obviously disagree with your assessment that the product is poor.
Bad call, homeslice…
I presume Zorlond is banned.
Well handled Paul.
Desperate for readerbase? This is Wapsi Square, I’m pretty sure Paul has a HUGE reader base already.
I bet he does! The art is good. The writing is great! The world Paul shows us is amazing. I love the characters.
Tina and Bud are my favorites. 🙂
Only if you’re talking about reduction…
of course, “weeding” the fanbase is a valid thought.
😀
You tork me off. I’ve been making obnoxious comments about Monica and the Girls (and the other women in the strip, too) and the gynotropic plotline and character arcs for MONTHS now and NOBODY jumps on me. You make one snide crack about fanservice and the flames begin? Tourists….
Yeah…. I like this one, but not in a Monica way. I like it in a I love women sort of way. It doesn’t really strike me as monica except for the 8 ball shirt/bikini thing with holes in the 8.
O-O wow, now I’ll need to wash my eyes in bleach.
Why? Cos the artwork is really nice? I don’t actually understand this comment…
Hmmm.. swimsuit tops for the gift shop? not a bad idea!
Exactly my thought, great design.
Interesting. It always seems to be Monica. I guess we know who “Miss Popularity” is in this strip. At least to the other artists. Not that it’s a bad thing, mind you, just interesting.
Well…she *is* the star of the comic… 😛
Old post, I know. But just had to say … as I continue my journey through the archives (almost caught up!) I seriously hope to see more of Katherine, she’s become one of my favorites.
Lovely art. I can’t understand why people have to drop crap on the guest artists.
Never thought about having a Power Girl-style keyhole for the interior of the “8” before. Interesting.
Kind of makes her look like a member of the “Fantastic Eight,” whoever those might be.
Probably the entire collection of members EVER (member changes don’t happen often).
Yes… Superheroic.
You look Marvel-ous!
(nod-nod) A definate superheroine vibe here. Looks good!
“Fantastic 8” would be a quartet built like Monica, you think?
Well, there was Sixpack’s “Section 8” from “Hitman”…
Nice style on that top. That pose, though… @_@;;;
Ah yes! Summer fun at the beach. You can’t beat that.
I think the guest artist have done a great job filling in for Paul. I believe they deserve a round of applause from us readers.
Yes! Let’s give them a round of clap!
EVIL!!!
Stolen from “Up the Down Staircase” – the book; never saw the film.
He was making a different reference, nothing to crab about…
Ah, such a great collection of guest art for this week! Can’t wait to get back to the story, but not a least bit dissappointed in what I’ve seen in the meantime 🙂
And that bikini top is ingenious: it’s both supportive AND a tease 😉
Yep, can honestly say I’ve never seen a top design use a double keyhole, also I love the background printer dots, whatever the official term is.
All of these fillers have been top shelf AFAIAC. I’m kinda hoping Paul can take more vacations. I’d love to see a Tina or Katherine week.
Shelly Week!
Let’s start a write-in campaign.
Benday. (Or is it “Ben-day”? Or maybe “Dots parodied by Roy Lichtenstein in ‘paintings’ that rip off comic artists without credit…”)
With a thong and a smile…
That’s a lovely redhead who would certainly catch my eye on the beach, but that’s not Monica.
Still, I hope that Eight-Ball top makes it into Paul’s wardrobe for the lovely Miss M.
Personally, I always thought that artists know when their renditions won’t really match up to reader expectations due to stylistic differences…which is why they draw them in iconic clothing (i.e. 8-ball top). 🙂
That said, this Monica is HOT! 🙂 I think that if more bikini tops looked like that, I’d consider wearing two piece swimsuits.
I kind of had the same impression, like this was “Monica of Marvel Comics” rather than of Paul’s much less cookie-cutter approach to drawing women.
I would not necessarily say desperate to improve the fanbase. Fanservice is a different story though.
I do worry the amount of indecent images this will generate and have posted on the interwebs. I’d prefer searches for Monica Villareal or Wapsi Square to lead here, not to the depraved modifications of fans.
Depravity has it’s place. Where would the “Reality” TV show business be without it? Face it, every guy (and a few of the girls) who sees this picture is hoping for a followup with a wardrobe malfunction concerning the bikini string upon which she is tugging.
Wow, supports and undermines your argument all in one stroke of inspiration. I hate reality TV for the very reason you speak of and yes that is its charm… sigh
Hmmm… second thinking my self… Not really your argument… more like your statement with which I agreed… Is it Friday yet… Mind is fried… it must be.
Didn’t you see the “backyard bikini” strips not too long ago?
I’m not really sure what difference it makes where searches lead. Searches on “Wapsi Square” will always hit here, first. If anybody WANTS something, eh, a little different, they can sift through to internet for it.
Besides . . . searches will never lead only and directly to one site unless the subject is unpopular. And I’m sure none of us want to wish unpopularity on the strip.
To phrase that more forthrightly, (Is that even a word?) popularity is what counts, and popularity is what will, in the long run, improve the motivation of the artist and the quality of the strips.
That’s a capitalist way of looking at it, but there you go.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Grant Gould’s work has been appealing to me since I started looking at it. Especially like his webcomic
re-swoon
Gulp ! Yowza !
Uh , I’ll have some coffee to go with the cheesecake , now . : )
A great pin-up to end a good week of guest artists . See y’all Monday .
For those whom are at a loss for words this week. It is called good art. It may not be what you are used to but consider it an expansion of how others may see things in the *World of Wapsi*.
Given the look on her face, I believe she knows she’s looking smokin’ hot in this getup. I also like how he made the 8 translucent…usually it’s solid white…
Excellent artwork this week!
A beautiful girl to be sure, but the proportions are a little off to be Monica. She looks a little tall and thin to be Monica, who is short and curvy.
I enjoy the guest comics and guest pinups (as long as I am not surprised by something worksite inappropriate–don’t want to be accused of accessing “adult material” lol)
Magic 8-ball bikini. I approve.
Perhaps magic 8-ballkini?
All signs point to YOWZA!!
I could see that top in the store as a separate. Girls (grrls) like M need separates if they want swimsuits that fit. We have a Grrl like M that goes to my church. and she says that is a major problem for her. She usually has to buy 2 swimsuits to get one that she can wear.
I was thinking, maybe we could get PyP on that…
I’d just like to thank Paul for having great artists fill in while he enjoys his vacation. Other web comics sometimes just go on hiatus and leave their readers with nothing. Paul doesn’t do this and I am glad he doesn’t. Thanks again!!
Dear Magic 8-Ball, can Monica ever be more beautiful?
So, Paul is auctioning off Ahsoka Tano & Aayla Secura Original art ATM. He says, “I’m letting my inner nerd out of the box”. Apparently, I couldn’t find mine. Google indicates they have something to do with Star Wars. Do I not know who those characters are because I never saw the last movie or did I just forget?
When I saw the name Aayla, all I could think of was Ayla in in the Clan of the Cave Bear books.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ahsoka_Tano 😉
Shelly and Bud in a bad mood.
I’ve been a Fan for Long time now just my first time to post.
Short Red Head with bumpers like that would be a sight that would literally burn through my eyes… if I don’t drown from my drool first that is… ^_^
I have to say Paul’s friends are really something! This guest arts should be in with the new Books Paul might release.
Oh . I forgot . . . giggity .
a la Family Guy?
DAYAM!!! HAWT! HAWT! HAWT!
Yeah, I never said I didn’t like it. It’s a great job, it just doesn’t scream Monica to me. The 8 ball shirt does though. The design is awesome as well. So kudos to… Grant was it?
It reminds me of an enlarged more professional type of comic used in the Scott Pilgrim comics. Granted there is more to this picture than is typical in those comics, but thats ok.
I am always impressed by good art. It’s why I read webcomics, the last bastion of innovative and aesthetically pleasing art in the world. At least in most cases.
This definitely proves the point. Good composition, nice coloring, and were this a drawing of an actual person it would make for an excellent caricature.
ALL the guest artist this week have been fantastic. It’s always nice to see familiar characters in a new style. It changes the pace and gives a fresh perspective.
I like the keyhole shirt for the 8. It would be interesting to see the obvious tan-lines she’s going to get sunbathing in that outfit 😀
Coffee~
Word .
I hope you enjoyed your vacation – the guest art has been fabulous, despite certain snarky and totally uncalled for comments by one person. Looking forward to getting the next installment of the story….whee!!
Awesome art, it’s missing the cute factor of Monica, but he’s got the sexiness down to a tee. 🙂
Tee-shirt, right?
And now for something completely different; remember Tina’s Day of The Dead Doll? Well … http://www.instructables.com/id/Project-Paper-clone/
do you know if your related to any other Taylors in other states?
also huge fan of Waspi Square my faves are Tina and Phix
I liked the guest week submissions, all are excellent artists and it’s cool to see through the eyes of others.
i think you might have something new to sell in the merchandise section. that would make a really hot bikini top in real life.
Hey, here’s a suggestion for those who want to bitch. Stop reading the comic. Seriously! Delete the bookmark and go do something better with your oh-so-valuable time. Don’t bother everyone here with flames and trash-talk, we don’t need it. We, the majority of the commentors, LIKE what Paul chooses to share with us.
Besides, as someone once said, “It’s all just lines on paper”.
Oh, and if I had a girlfriend, I’d so put down the money to buy her a bikini like that. Yowza.
Hmmm…. An entirely different meaning to Super 8 film…
