People forget that inline skates go back quite a long way – they just have wheels in place of the blades of ice skates. The quad (four wheel) skate only appeared in 1863 but made turning easier and came to be the default pattern for the 20th century.
so… you’re saying that the four-wheels-in-a-straight-line skates were invented BEFORE the year 1863? and that the one-wheel-on-each-corner skates are actually NEWER tech? note that i’m ignoring the differences in materials that modern plastics and bearings and such made, I’m going for the basic premise of the skates construction.
Yep. Rollerskates, first patented 1760 (in Belgium; it flopped); quad skates, 1863. The idea caught on after 1849, when a guy named Louis Legrange needed to show an opera character ice skating; his stage skates didn’t work very well, but the basic idea of putting wheels on shoes was out there and a generation later James Plimpton figured out how to use rubber mounted bogies to let the user turn easily (and the modern quad system was born; he called it the rocking skate). The 1870s saw ball bearings and toe brakes, and by the 1880s you could easily buy something that looked essentially like the roller skates of today.
nah… just her chest and buttocks would be warm, everything else will be too frickin’ cold if that’s the only thing that’s gonna warm her up. you *know* where all the guys are gonna be staring…
Well, it’s a very economical costume. She didn’t have to buy anything special. Bike helmet, skates, pads, #8 shirt, and I’m guessing the pumpkin candy collector is old. Good going Monica, more money to spend on audio equipment!!! Oh, and she does look like a roller derby star!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN, N’AT….. Have to share this, Wife got a call from her neice over the weekend. Her 4 year old daughter woke up Saturday morning looked out her bedroom window at the snow storm and shouted: “Mommy look, It’s CHRISTMAS!!”
Speaking of the weekend October Surprise for the Northeast, we here in the Midwest had the same sort of wet, heavy snowfall a few years ago in October. It took months to get all the broken limbs cleaned up, and power outages lasted for days for some families. What a mess! Not the kind of thing anyone sensible would want to trick-or-treat in.
That said, M looks determined and ready for the campaign. Go, girl!
No, I never have to deal with them. Though I don’t think it would bother me to do so. Being a great fan of cuteness, I would like to see the really little ones in their little costumes.
It’s just that halloween holds some very dark memories for me and is still a time of great stress and dread due to (what are to me, anyway) real ramifications of them. I’ll be better tomorow once the mid of the night has passed, hopefullly without event.
Since I’m sure Mon is a bit too old to go trick-or-treating, I’ll instead assume that she’s rolling around her neighbourhood giving that candy away.
Hey, it’s plausible.
Knowing Monica, she’ll probably eat all that candy in one day.
Who wouldn’t
With, or without a quart of frozen custard to wash it down?
Would any one want to try and take it away .. just asking
Old fashioned (also known as REAL) skates! She is a classic!

I thought Roller Derby still used the old quad skates. I would think they would allow better stability when taking hits.
You are right, Derby girls still use Quads! I love that Monica is a Derby Girl for Halloween!
I was hoping to see the whole cast and crew in their costumes ^-^
That would be a very “chilly” costume to be wearing this Halloween…
She’s warmed by the glow of all the men watching her !

Roller zombie?¿?¿ wtf
Any particular Roller Derby Team she is portrayed as a member of here, Paul?
“M” looks like one of the Bay City Bombers. LOL
I’d say the Rat City Rollers, but I’m pretty sure that she’s wearing her 8-ball shirt and not a team jersey.
Since he is from Minneapolis, she should be a Minnesota Roller Girl or a Northstar Roller Girl, but I agree, it looks like an 8 ball shirt.
Well, this sucks. I would have preferred more story line. And don’t give me any shit. I bought the super-sized Day of the Dead poster. Did you?
He mentioned on his FB that he would be drawing Monica in costume for today.
Hey! Be glad. If all he did was story we’d never get any posters or specials.
Not that keen on the posters….(too many puns)
Ba-dum-TSH!
Ooh! Instead of speed dating, speed treating…
I like the concept, maximum candy with minimum time.

Awesome work Paul. Happy Halloween folks!
I thought the 8-ball was a tee-shirt…it comes as a tank as well?
Sure, just cut off the sleeves.
Happy Halloween!!!

I’ll just be glad when halloween is over.
how come?
trick or treaters?

Love the drawing, love Hallowe’en. Can’t wait for the goblins to show up!

Oh wait, never mind.

Happy halloween!
I carved my very first pumpkin this year

It was a cylon
Well..it tried to be….
Anyway – the lil pumpkin was also homegrown so I personally have been waiting for this day most of the year!
Wonderful to see a lovely picture of M rollerskating on it
You gotta post a pic!
=.)
Here
and like i said it’s not that good
No, no, it’s a Cylon, I can recognize it. If you can recognize it, it’s good.
Looks like a cylon to me. I like it. =)
ooh! get a revolving light inside it so it looks more like the bouncing-back-n-forth scanner beam!
I think you did very well with the carving! And the color is perfect… Cylons is golden, after all.
*clink*
Heh. Stepdaughter Helen is in cosmetology school. We’re gonna take the girls out trick or treating, and she decided she shouldn’t look ordinary.
I think that non-members can see this page.
If not, let me know and i’ll post a link to the pics themselves later..
You sure that’s not just normal bed-head?
kinda reminds me of the psycho witch that Helena Bonham Carter plays in the Harry Potter flicks, i can’t remember her characters name…
Bellatrix Lestrange.
Most perfect casting ever done in a film she was ^^
Anime hair!
awsome
How long did it take to comb it out again?
And here’s pics of the girls’ costumes.
Pirate and…
pink bat?
The roller girl in me is going “JESUS CHRIST! PUT SOME ELBOW PADS ON! ARE YOU WEARING A MOUTHGUARD!?!”
Great art, and excellent halloween costume.
Hee Hee, I thought that too!
