Are those her shadow’s eyes – or are they the light getting through between her arms and her body, which it ought be.

Which would mean her shadow has no head…

Judging from the angle of the lighting, her byoobbs are blocking the light that would otherwise pass through the space between her arms and her body.

no, that shadow does not fit… if the light is shining through where here arms are, then it looks like the head is missing!

or, it could just be a composite shadow of her demons…

yeah, but i know that “I” auto-assume that anyone *THAT* fine looking and has such a sunny outlook on life normally (when i get my latte in the mornings) ALREADY HAS a boyfriend/husband so i don’t even bother to start to flirt, only to crash n’ burn… now if EVERYONE did that, then we arrive at this unfortunate picture… her standing there, nobody to cuddle with… because, in reality, she DOESN’T have anybody and is left wondering why nobodies hit on her yet…

Wow… that leaves me feeling sad in a whole bunch of ways.

Sad for the “Tina who was”… the young woman who died and is gone, never having had the chance to live out her life and (as far as we know) find love and affection. Those empty eyes in the shadow make me think of her.

Sad, too, for the “Tina who is”… the sort-of-pseudo-individual run as a puppet by the demon collective. In many, she is one… real enough to wonder about “her” future fate, and (as we see here) real enough to want love in a very human sort of way. The Tina-who-is feels some guilt (or at least responsibility) for the fate of the Tina-who-was… could this be enough to stop her from ever allowing herself to become involved in a one-on-one loving relationship with a human, out of a sense of “I don’t deserve this… she did!”

I wonder who the “Tina who will be” will turn out to be?

Kissing is highly overrated, not to mention messy and very unhygenic. From what I’ve heard, many hookers will do sexual things but not kiss.

Worse yet, if you kiss someone who has been kissed by several because she is standing under a mistletoe, then you will also be kissing all those who kissed her before you. Ewwww!

“From what I’ve heard, many hookers will do sexual things but not kiss.”

Not because of hygienics, from what I’d gathered – intimacy. In the mindset of a sex worker, they can write off the acts they perform as just something they do as a service, nothing personal.

But a kiss is personal, and for some very much so. So they avoid the kiss to avoid breaking the barrier of a client/provider encounter and stumbling into something more like a relationship.

For some this is to avoid an unwanted connection – for others they actually fear that is the one thing they could do to betray a partner they may have an actual relationship with.

Don’t ask me, I can’t say I *agree* with all that, but I understand it, from an academic point of view.

Far as kissing goes – greatest invention of all times, we should do more of it.

I’ll start with Tina, she looks like she could use one, and I would see it as *my* Xmas gift, so we both win! :D

Wow — there’s a lot of pathos in this drawing. Is it me, or is Tina afraid of her shadow — and is it her shadow? I’d think that there should be spots of light near her shadow’s elbows, at least. The first thought that came to mind was something straitjacketed, and that’s what was worrying her.
But I’m probably (extensively) overanalyzing. :)

First, she would not be standing there long if I was there. Kissing under the Mistletoe is a tradition to not be ignored. I certainly can understand her trepidation, but without all the analysis above, I think Tina is just as human as the rest of us. We all have our demons, just too many ignore that fact. That she is a collective of demons does not make a relationship with her any more difficult, Shelly has the hardest I think, but in the Wapsiverse bad is often just an obstacle to reach the good. Caramel frapp, Tina, then flip the sign to closed and lets just talk…

Well… Monica has Kevin, Shelly has Justin, Jin has Allen, Lakshmi has Owen(?), Brandi doesn’t seem to have a S.O. that we’ve seen so far, but with her personality (and looks) i don’t think she’d have a problem getting one, Bud doesn’t have one *yet* so we’re hoping Paul is working that angle… And now we find that for all her helping of others, Tina is alone at Xmas, just standing under the Mistletoe waiting for *somebody* to give a damn enough to come over and plant a big ol’ smooch on her… OK Y’all… now it’s time to pay her back for that help, so i guess I’ll be the first in line to give her a kiss (especially as she is looking supremely FINE tonight, not that she doesn’t look great at any other time as well)…

I think the only reason we see eyes in her shadow is the symbolism that Tina is herself a shadow of the girl that might have been had it not been a necessity for her to exists as the Tina she is now.

Either that or the “Eyes are the window to the soul” and she is essentially soulless (in the normal sort of way that is), so her shadow is showing this by having empty spaces where eyes should be.
Either way the forlorn look an her face just makes me want to reach out to her and let her know that she is not unloved. (G-d I am such a nerd.)

        I’d offer a simpler diagnosis, Maark30.

It’s not that you’re a nerd (although you may be… I certainly am!).

It’s that you have a heart.

Tina’s expression will resonate with anyone who has a heart, I think. We’ve all been there (save for some few psychopaths, perhaps). We’re all conflicted and divided within ourselves, we’re all pretending in one way or another to be “normal”, trying to be not-outsiders, wishing to love and be loved, and being horribly afraid that we never will be.

It’s part of the human condition… and despite her quasi-demonic nature, despite her description of herself as a wild animal and “not domesticated”, Tina is very human where it counts.

Another powerful piece with Tina, and does evoke comparison to equally powerful moments. Dickens’ orphans of Christmas Present came to mind for me too, but this time the image throws its net wider.

Scantrob above mentioned that the only main cast without boyfriends are Tina, Bud and Brandi. Paul is being very careful with how these characters show affection with their bodies, and with good reason. Bud and Brandi’s bodies were seized, raped and incinerated. The terms on which the golems can approach potential lovers are very narrow indeed.

Tina, however, has a borrowed shell. While the issue of Tina having sex has come up, it’s never been directly addressed that it might not be her body to have sex with. The Collective is very devoted to the original Tina; she manages the vacated temple with the devotions its original occupant would desire: a Madonna always hovering in the background, physical pain to save Monica from an asylum.

But it’s not really her temple. Not really her place to invite sex into it, if Euryale’s sister’s story is anything to go by. And perhaps that is best, what with the secrets and the danger. There’s also the equation of going forward into life, the making of families, and reasons humanity celebrate holidays as milestones of time, all hallmarks of domestication. Tina is a thing that life has set itself against.

These rituals are for humans to welcome one another, not demons. Baldr is immortal, but Baldr died. A saviour is not born unto her.

For while Tina clings to the tree of life, she is not of it. She is not the fruit, she is an ornament staring out of a knothole. Children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile.

In reading what you’ve written here, I had a sudden memory of Sturgeon’s incomparable story A Saucer Full of Loneliness. As best as I can recall from memory,

        To the lonelinest one:

There is in certain living souls, a quantity of loneliness so great that it must be shared, as company is shared among lesser beings.

Such a loneliness is mine. So know by this, that there is in existence one lonelier than you.

All three of them are, technically, undead.

I don’t think that the Golem Girls have unexpected problems beyond the obvious ones, if only because they’ve had so long to work through them; Jin’s relationship with Alan seems to be working as well as we can expect when one partner is more than a thousand times older than the other. Finding a guy who’s emotionally ready for an indestructible golem in his life has got to be tricky. (Maybe Euryale knows some guys?) We haven’t seen the Cerberus Club recently, though…

Tina is in another situation, though; she hasn’t had centuries to adapt to her unusual condition. It’s not at all clear that the demon collective can offer the same emotional support to its component units that the Golem Girls could give each other as three individuals, and we only see a little of Tina’s interior voices. As a (mostly) physically normal human, she faces many of the problems we all do, which may seem a blessing when compared to the Golem Girls’ expectation of immortality and walking alone and untouchable across an empty Earth littered with the wreckage of a long vanished civilization. That wasn’t any fun the first time.

But we digress from the fun and humor of Wapsi Square.

So…how to we find a date for Tepoz?

Of course they can, if the band is playing “The Song of the Sibyl”. After all, as the bell rings the maypole spins, and those who don’t dare get out on the dance floor find themselves lost in the wilderness, until the arrival and the reunion.

(OK, have I music-geeked enough for one posting?)

more romantic for the mistletoe would be

rose of sharyn by killswitch engage :)

Am I missing something? Has Paul said that this is Tina? The picture has normal eyes, instead of Tina’s “ornaments dangling in an empty socket.” The collar is reminiscent of our favorite demon-possessed barista – and Tina’s got to be one of my favorite characters – but I get the feeling this is supposed to be someone else. Whoever it is, she looks nervous, sad and lonely – and I’d be more than happy to take her home and make it all better, if I weren’t old enough to be her G’pa :(

Just looked again at the Shadow of Tina and if I’m correct it appears the Shadow of the Mistletoe is dying! Note what looks like dead leaves falling onto Tinas’-Shadow-head.
Or am I reading too much into this?

That’s Tina’s choker. Paul has said Tina’s eyes are silver.

She’s probably making an effort to look as human as possible, and doesn’t know how well she’s succeeded.

Tina has very interesting eyes. But they may not be as constant as those of other characters. They remind me of an exchange in one of the Sandman comics:

        “Are you always so…tall?”

        “It depends on who’s looking.”

This one sure tugs at the heart strings. Alone during the holidays is not a very pleasant experience. I am pretty sure it is Tina. Her X-mas tree ornaments aren’t visible to the regular folks or she wouldn’t have much business no matter how good her coffee is. This is a chance to see what mortals out of the loop see; so how come she’s not batting off suitors?

Based on the angle of the shadows (Tina & Mistletoe) and distance between shadows… Tina’s Shadow has no head. That said, Tina’s showless head is so cute, I wanna give her a peck on the cheek. Silver being my favorite color doesn’t hurt either.

That dress…combined with that expression and pose…

That’s heartbreaking and heartbreakingly sexy all at once.

Such a pretty package to open, but so conscious the gift box contains a roil of demons. And the thought…”who could love me if they really knew me?”

    Excellent work, Paul.

I’ve had a minor thing for Tina since she showed up.
As for demons, if she knew my ex-wife then she’s know she’s safe with me, I wasn’t the crazy one (with paperwork to prove it).
Have her message me, she can consider this asking for a coffee date…or maybe tea.

Hope she likes younger/older guys, depending on your perspective I’m 57 or 30,000 years old.

    Hmm… sad.

Tina remains my second favorite character (after Bud). I’d like to see her have a bit more mental/emotional cohesion in her life. Her life is kind of on hold due to her status (as a sort of a greek chorus for Monica).

Are the “demons” really demons? Or are they what you get when you fragment an actual, human personality. Is there hope for Tina? I’d like to think there is.

Not that she’s necessarily in a bad place, but … emotionally, she’s in limbo, not really “in the moment”. However, there have been times when she actually has been and has acted remarkably human. (Like … for example, the time she was terrified that the sphinxes were going to kill her).
