For those who don’t remember well the old manual tuner the channel selector does not match up directly across to numbers. This is pointing to Channel 5. The reason is 13 channels and the space needed in the tuner for the components plus the space for UHF switch. Yes I know I am dating myself rather badly here but I used to fix these things in my spare time years ago.
Meh…you’re not dating yourself that much. I remember using a manual dial on TVs when I was younger.
Then again…if you’re around my age (28, soon to be 29), then I guess I’ve just been dated too. 😛
It really amuses me how many bits of older technology or general knowledge people think of as OLD that I remember using or playing with when I was younger (though I tended to get in trouble for playing with the typewriter until I was 10 and “old enough not to break it”).
And the bright dot that stayed forever in the middle of the screen. I think that at least one Science Fiction story was inspired by that dot–James Blish’s 1954 short story “Beep”, where each message over the Dirac Communicator started with a beep that contained every message ever sent, past, present or future.
29, Radio/TV/Film major, just got my student card for the Society of Broadcast Engineers, and desperately want to know how all this works. Date away, it means you’re smarter than me and I can learn from you.
That’s true. I was thinking it would have to be set to ch. 3 or 4, not 12. Then I realized what we see of the the channel selector could be the opposite end from the channel indicator. In which case it appears as if it is set to channel 4.
Also looks like a TV from a seedy motel somewhere.
look at the title of the show in the inset… BAIL ENFORCEMENT Agent… he is obviously a bail jumper and she’s the bounty hunter sent to get him back… and he doesn’t WANT to go back, so he runs away… sorta’.
Now you’ve got that great music stuck in my head! [hurriedly posts the link to it it to get it *OUT* of her head and *INTO* all of yours!] http://youtu.be/jcZO1cESEwE
Well, this proves that having cable doesn’t mean seeing all, because the reference to this TV-show(??) goes com-ple-tely over my head. *looks seriously confuzzled*
Is it something on Discovery??? I remember it had a series about bounty-hunters…
That is a movie I’d go watch!!! Reminds me of Roger Zelazny’s Roadmarks novel. Love your stuff Jabberwonky. You should design movie posters and book covers. If you don’t already.
Don’t chuck out those old analog sets yet, cats and kittens! You have to have something to hook up those old VCRs, Atari 2600s, LaserDisc players, VIC 20s, and other classic video equipment to. The newer TVs can’t always display the old stuff properly. Ah, the days of large console units. Solid-state, baby!
My 42-inch Phillips HDTV has RCA jack inputs. Curious, I hooked up the RCA outs on my old Atari 2600 to the Phillips – and it works.
Playing Centipede, Asteroids, Dig-Dug, Battlezone, Tank, and many others on a screen that big is a bit (pun intended) mind-boggling; Pixilation City where each pixel is very discernable 🙂
The main amplifier also has RCA input jacks; listening to the then-state-of-the-art warbly squeeky sound in 7.1 surround is, well, a different kind of immersion 😉
This is a fun hiatus! All the goodies coming out of the shadows…
Maaaaan, I was really hoping for a Tina art today…
Same here. But hey, there’s still tomorrow.
And next week 🙂
I want a starwars one now from the idea of yesterdays commenter :p
Monica could play a nice Princess Leia.
Hmm.. Brandi as Chewbacca ^^
Or Nudge.
http://ch3che.deviantart.com/art/she-s-a-rebel-177893125 little late for someone doing leia… but, i don’t see monica as leia, at all… maybe as wedge, ben n yoda might work if they had books, the one that has the angry outbursts but turns out to be lovable… throws engine blocks when mildly annoyed/detaches heads when upset about the outcome of a game of sabbac(or was that holochess?)… matched to personality, it’d be something totally different from ‘what would they look hottest in?’.
Tina as Leia, actually.
Phix as Yoda.
Shelly as Han.
Be nice if there was a collage / group shot of the remaining characters tomorrow.
Look! It’s a television set! And they’re showing a dramatization of a Stephanie Plum/Janet Evanovich novel! How engaging!
Yes, I really am psyched about the tv.
My wife has read all 18 Stephanie Plum novels. She was really hoping Sandra Bullock would play her in the movie adaptation…
I ran down on those after the first four or five – too repetitive.
Never even heard of them.
They’re definitely not in the same bracket with Pratchett’s works. But they’re on the same shelf for now; I need more bookcases.
What channel is she on??
(furiously clicking remote)…
OH, it’s the old MANUAL TV…but it still looks tuned between 6 and 7…
Don’t touch that dial!!
Ah! It’s tuned to channel Bleen, the newly discovered number between six and seven….
(Mad prps to those who recognize where that came from….) ;P
Mad ‘props’ – a mad perp is on the telly above…..
It’s a Carlin thing, innit?
A box of fresh-baked cybercookies for you!
Carlin On Campus, a great stand up show, The man is still missed.
looks like channel 5 to me, if the blade of the dial is pointing to the channel it’s on.

Just wait until you hit 64!

I still do for a few friends. Some repairs are a real pain, even if you can find the parts.
Erm.
Confuzzled 🙁
This illustration is based on a guilty pleasure television show that Monica watches revolving around the character Sugarbear.
Sigh, here goes. I love Monica. She is the very best.
That show, and the Ghost Hunter marathons…. 😉
Thank you 🙂
I did try wiki-ing it when I got work but only got a link to a ‘Golden Crisp’ cereal 😀
You gotta love the commitment to detail when the author even comes up with the favorite shows for the characters.
Yup. Xactly.
Does this mean that ‘Dark Alley’ is he favorite comic book?
I only vaguely remembered mention of Sugarbear…way to bring back something obscurely awesome! 🙂
As I recall Sugarbear was one of thise side things up on the old website that didn’t get carried over to the new YA/Beige version.
I’m not typically a fan of “reality” television, but I might give this show a chance.
So, I recognize the young woman from her desktops, but sadly I don’t remember her from Wapsi Square. Little help here? Anyone?
Ooops, nevermind. Paul just answered Paula, directly above me.
Same “bat” time. Same “bat” channel. (*klink*)
Damn, that’s an old TV! Monica’d need a converter box for sure!
It’s amazing. A good quality HD TV will for ever put you off on an old analog set.

Sounds like Mickie is a repeating customer….
He ran from her?
He ran FROM her?
HE RAN FROM HER?
What an idiot.
Some of the prettiest things are the deadliest. Oleander for example. Still this the best thing I’ve seen on TV in years.
look at the title of the show in the inset… BAIL ENFORCEMENT Agent… he is obviously a bail jumper and she’s the bounty hunter sent to get him back… and he doesn’t WANT to go back, so he runs away… sorta’.
This reminds me of the Big Shot tv show that was on Cowboy Bepob! But I know its probably based off of In Plain Sight with Mary McCormack.
I would love to wedge my bat in her backdoor!
So you were the first to take it there…*shakes head* I was wondering who it would be. 😛
That’s what she said! Woo!
The refined term is: So to speak. (Per Capt. Ken Dahl of Airforce Blues comic.)
Julie- Please forgive him for his case of Testosterone Poisoning, I’m sorry but some of us NEVER outgrow it.

It’s Monica’s favourite show, Paul says.
Sugarbear here…

Votie thing went buh-byes?
Their site appears to be borked.
It’s been up and down several times in the last week or so.
I theorize that someone is rigging the voting.
No colors. But a movie poster..

Jin wallpaper with the left eye fixed. It was bugging me, man.
Marvellous 😀
A fella, a clever fella, might have put the link in the post the first time around…

That’s cool! =D
Bad person.
VERY person.
I stand in awe.
Awwwww.
Narrator: “I said “awe”. A-W-E.”
People: “OooOOOooh.”
Narrator: “That’s better.”
–The only quote I particularly liked from “George of the Jungle” liveaction film
I would watch the hell out of that movie.

Wolf- You are a braver man than I. I think I’d break my brain if I did that for long. LOL!
If it doesn’t work still you can turn into something cool using the instructables website 😛
I LOVE the Instructables site. I just wish it was a little easier to gather the gubbins I need, over here.
If you’re about to toss one like this… http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/8425738/Oldest-working-television-set-expected-to-sell-for-5000.html
…don’t.
Does her shirt say “sugarhea”? That’s not a disease I would want…
