What is a Wapsi girl?
When I was first contacted, I really didn’t think I was fit to be called a Wapsi Girl…I’m always so full of self-doubt, awkward and self-conscious at every turn. As I watched Paul put up profiles of other girls–smart, funny, pretty girls–I thought for sure that I didn’t fit in with them.
Then, within the comic, was a storyline about dealing with one’s inner demons, where smart and cute Monica is plagued by some shadows that I am quite familiar with. That’s when I understood.
Yes, I’m shy, but I’m a musician. I get nervous, but I am a public speaker and I audition for things all the time, stage-fright be damned! I am willing to bet that all those confident, beautiful, radiant women who have been profiled sometimes feel the doubt that I feel.
No matter what my insecurities tell me, I am a competent human being, a beautiful woman, and a talented musician. I can push past my own fears and say that I am strong. I can take the lower points in my life and use them to fuel determination that will drive me to my best moments. I can share my songs and know the world is a better place for my being within it.
I AM a Wapsi Girl, and proud of it.
