What does it mean to be a Wapsi Girl?
I am fairly new to Wapsi Square and the wonderful work that Paul Taylor has done. Having spent some time going over his comics and the representation he has of women…I have to say that I’ve fallen in love. His girls are strong, independent, intelligent, beautiful, spirited, and playful. In a society where women and our girls are subjected to objectivity and encouraged to succumb to the status quo of what the media considers ‘perfection’, Paul has taken the natural beauty of all girls and empowered his characters with qualities that to me define what women are and can be…I am honored and overjoyed that Paul asked me to be a part of this project…
What makes me a Wapsi girl?
My name is Melody. I am a recent graduate from University with a Bachelor’s of Science with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. I am a mother and wife who overcame the obstacles faced returning to university. Science is a male dominated field. Even now, women are at times treated differently…for being just that…women. It is my love of science that drove my determination. I hope to encourage diversity in science. With my degree, it is also my hope that I can apply my knowledge to the betterment of others through research and education. I am intelligent.
I am not all science…
I easily interact with others in every form of communication and embrace the diversity of people that I encounter. I podcast expressing my views of topics and incorporate others that I meet through Twitter and face to face. I do not apologize for my beliefs or opinions. They are my own and they make me who I am. I am spirited. In my life I have had to be strong in order to brave the world and the storms that I’ve endured. My life has not been one for a weak willed person. I am independent and strong. Through all of my life’s hurricanes, I have maintained my sense of humor. This comes through in my interactions with people and in my podcast. I genuinely care about others. It is my joy when I make them smile or laugh…I am playful.
I consider myself a bit of a nerd and geek. I enjoy video games, Kevin Smith, Dungeons and Dragons, and films including the Sci Fi genre. I know a ridiculous amount of comic book and sci fi trivia from the people in my life. I frequently make fun of myself never really considering myself ‘beautiful’…Though I have been told that I am by others. I always graciously accept the compliments with a giggle. If I am indeed ‘beautiful’, I’ll never admit to it…not without some chuckles…
I am a Wapsi girl. I am strong, independent, intelligent, spirited, playful and…reluctantly ‘beautiful’ HA!
Thank you Paul for asking me to be a part of this project. It is a wonderful, positive influence that displays the amazing diversity and the strengths that women do indeed carry.
