I’m Oni. I don’t believe in paying attention to what you might think your limits are.
I draw Stupid and Insane Defenders Against Chaos, I founded the indie creator convention called Intervention, and I post art tutorials and fun things at my blog. I’m also a black belt in an Okinawan Kempo, Thai Kickboxing, and Kali Eskrima mix. I sing, travel the country in support of my art career, and go to Disney World more often than I probably should.
You’d never know that I was abandoned by my parents when I was a baby.
Like I said, I don’t believe in paying attention to what you might think your limits are. I didn’t have nice clothes, good food, or the nicest toys growing up. I know too well what it’s like to go to bed hungry or to duct tape my shoes together. I wish I didn’t remember what it was like to cry myself to sleep knowing that no one really cared. I still carry the scars from this time period. I still get flashbacks reminding me of sad times. I remember very much what it was like to strike out on my own and pay my way through college. At first I was very angry that I didn’t have much and all of the other kids had things. In college most people had families to go home to who missed them. I did not have the same things. Eventually I realized that if I stopped being angry about everything and focused on good things that everything else would follow. Focusing on something I love – comics and art – helped me get through the hardest times. The best part is that it allowed me to help others who are in the same situation that I used to be in. I wouldn’t trade my art and comics family for anything.
I hear all the time from people that they don’t think they have the opportunity or connections to do much with their life. The truth is that you can make your own opportunity. I should be dead right now. I did not have any famous friends helping me. I worked hard and made my own opportunity by staying true to what I believe, treating everyone as I like to be treated, and using the internet to get the word about about who I am and what I do. Focusing on my artwork, helping others, and my martial arts has helped me stay on track even on days that it hurts almost too much to move.
I encourage you all to be stubborn. I encourage you to disbelieve. I also encourage you to kick life in the nuts. If I can do it, so can you. It is as simple as that.
