Ah. I found that in the dictionary. It had only one definition: A word having a meaning opposite to that of another word: The word “wet” is an antonym of the word “dry.”
Antipodal, Antithetical, Contradictory, Diametrical, or, in words of fewer then 4 syllables:
Conflicted or Confused. [NONE of which appear to apply to Daylia.]
Her response is “Friggan Awesome,” and EXACTLY what Pickle needed to hear.
Friendship really IS Magic.
While Dayla did indeed express the awesomeness of Pickle’s performance, by suggesting that Castela needed to be in a category beyond predator, one dangerous to everybody, shows at least some caution and/or fear, hence my earlier comment,
Look up “antinomy”. It’s a form of paradox… a conflict between two different propositions, each of which seems reasonable and proper but which are mutually incompatible.
Spider Robinson has a great example in one of his stories. A man was engaged to be married, very much in love with a woman who loved him just as much. Shortly before the wedding, his fiance told him that she’d had a revelation… she felt that she’d been called to take holy orders and become a nun, and thus couldn’t marry him. The man was a good and faithful Catholic, and his tradition and beliefs told him that he should be overjoyed for her, and praise God for having called her into holy service… and at the same time his heart was breaking because he was losing the woman he loved and the life he had been looking forward to.
That’s an extreme case of antinomy as it applies to personal relationships.
It’s a great word. Few people know it, although most of us experience it at some point in our lives.
In Daylla’s case, “You and your power are awesome” and “You and your power are incredibly dangerous” are an antinomy.
Being that that’s exactly what the Blackthorns were, it’d make sense that being a blackthorn hybrid would put Castella on the gatekeeper tier. And likely the low end being that she’s a hybrid.
maybe not some hybrids can be above and beyond what the original could be. remember the fey cut through a blackthorn in the past. and little miss here has killed fey when only a child.
Actually, I’m interested in the “Gatekeeper” classification, and whether it’s anything more than teenspeak.
After all, _something_ had to convince all those gods and greater powers to be on the other side of the world-grid. The Apos serve one kind of police function, but I don’t think it’s on_that_ level.
We know a few. The Sphinxes in general and Apos specifically. The Titans and Sub-Titans (includes the Jaguar Girl). The Black Thorns. I’d argue the Library itself.
There may be more amoung the “gods” that just aren’t allowed on Earth anymore. As with most things life is a gradient and some Gatekeepers are stronger than others. I’d think one big indicator is if the Library has to say Yes or No to an entity crossing over. Fey, as powerful as they are, aren’t blocked/vetted by the Library.
I don’t count the Golems exactly. They are purely human made paras at or above the Gatekeeper level.
The Golem Girls made the world grid so I guess they’re the ultimate gatekeepers, although gods like Shelly’s mom (and maybe Shel herself??) may be more powerful.
More like Brandi made the world grid. Bud was just a heavy and Jin was intelligence. Brandi (and the Nu Gui) did most of the real scheming.
Cass as a “gatekeeper” may be something a bit more than was expected of her. After all, she was bred to be a tactical weapon – not a protector (though that’s what she ended up – thanks, Leucoisa and Atsali!).
@Dave:
Granted, In the first 2 frames Daylla is …. conflicted. She is entertaining, and resolving 2 completely contradictory sets of thoughts and impulses. [The sort of thing we humans do ALL-The-Time.] It’s the reason for her first Comment- “SHUT UP!” In the third panel, reaction sets in. She’s resolved it. Her expression, her body language, nothing says fear or intimidation. Castela is startled enough by it that Daylla is yanking her off balance TOWARDS her! First, and above every other consideration, she’s Happy for her friend.
Dispite Daylla’s impression, all of that rock didn’t disintigrate. It rebounded off the cliff face, and shot off over the horizen. Otherwise Castela’s comment about “…too much english …” makes no sense. Protesting that “I DIDN’T! It’s not dust! I just bounced … most of it a mile or so that way” wasn’t a particularly useful thing to say just then.
Stinkweed thinking Daylla would be scared of her, and then the look on her face when Daylla thinks her powers are awesome. 😄😀
Glad this in’t go the way I thought it would.
The matter seems to be getting astray, doesn’t it? There’s still how Castela knows the kid who went missing to be explained.
Just gotta explain one significant proper noun at a time, so the story can be properly told.
This is leading to it, Stela needed to explain who Reginald was and how she met him
Whatever level they classify golems (e.g. Bud), Castela is a juvenile version.
I remember Nadette having similar antinimous feelings about Atsali.
Eventually Castela wi’ll get around to Reginald, and then get to the point!
Antinimous?
antonymous, they had a slight spelling mishap

That word doesn’t seem to appear in any dictionary.

Thanks for the new information, Dave!
I need to take that definition back to Gunnercrigg Court with me.
From the Greek “anti” (against) “noma” (the law) and the Latin “antinomina.” I read that story when it came out.
Being that that’s exactly what the Blackthorns were, it’d make sense that being a blackthorn hybrid would put Castella on the gatekeeper tier. And likely the low end being that she’s a hybrid.

Or maybe the high end depending on what all they mixed into her genetic cocktail.
Will we be seeing a Keymaster eventually?
Beat me to it!
If Cassie plays her cards right, we’ve already seen the Keymaster…Reginald!
If Castella’s the gatekeeper, then who’s the keymaster?
(…couldn’t resist the Ghostbusters pun. Sorry.)
And if there’s a keymaster, then where’s the colonel?
(why would I even WANT to resist?)
The colonel is in Kentucky cooking fried chicken.
I guess is it’s a good thing that our favorite plant is a good person.
Castela doesn’t seem to think it’s awesome. She looks like she was seeking some understanding she didn’t get.

I predict a HUG, that would seriousl compromise anyone who actually had a skeletal structure.
The shock and disbelief is at blowing up natural rock formations in a US National Monument owned by the Navajo nation.
“If Thorn Goddess want to blow up rocks, Thorn Goddess can blow up rocks.”
The protective and defensive barriers are probably sooo thick and heavy on some of the side canyons that they probably have disappeared.

A Certain Magical Railgun.
