There was no “stole” because it implies Hiroshi is a possession to own, and not a person with his autonomy. Cas was in denial of her own feelings, while Shawna owned up to them. She took the step to ask Hiroshi out, while Cas continued to wallow in her own ‘tsundere’ space.
Sorry, Hiroshi was under no obligation to wait for Cas to figure her shit out.
Personally probably the only one who doesn’t see anything really there on Stela’s part, just like with Timmeh: it was more the attention she felt she got from him than any real feelings
Not the only one. I’ve argued against the people growling at Shawna for awhile. Even if Cas DID/Does have feelings for Hiroshi she’s either unable or unwilling to come to terms with them. He isn’t a possession. He’s a person. He can make his own damned choices, and Shawna was willing to at least EXPLORE whatever she was feeling. I’m really tired of the “he belonged to best girl!” camp..
To be honest, I do better when I go back and read the books. That way I can flip around and pick things up that I missed when I have a “What??”
moment. His storytelling can be supremely complex.
Are you having trouble with the plot line, or was it just the “camera angle” rotating around the two of them that caused confusion? The way I read layout of this scene, the POV started out from Castela’s right side, circled around behind the two girls in the second panel, then continued around them until the POV ended up in front of them.
If your issue was with the plot points, I don’t see the problem. This seems like a perfectly normal interaction for teens who are growing up emotionally and moving beyond their own egocentric worldviews. Granted, there are sadly many “adults” who never manage to reach that level of growth, but our author is pretty good about letting his characters mature…
Hiroshi’s been somewhat clueless about the whole Hiroshi/Shawna/Castella situation, and sort of bumbled his way through it. If he’s to blame for anything, it’s that he didn’t think to sit down with both of them and try to figure the situation out and minimize the drama.
Didn’t say Hiroshi was the only one to blame. Castella shares a fair bit of the blame, too. If there’s anyone completely blameless in the situation, it’s Shawna. All she did was act on her feelings and go for it.
I think that what Castella mostly got from Hiroshi was someone non-judgemental that she could just talk to. Seems like Shawna is willing to help provide what Castella lost when Hiroshi was de-bugged. Could be a good swap for Castella…
Paul, I know some time back you did a week break photo of Cas at age 18, but I really like the way she’s looking in this comic. It’s the most normal/human….something indefinably different. She looks really, really good. You can SEE the pensive, thoughtful “mood” in her face. Excellently done, Sir.
It’s nice to turn an acquaintance into a friend.
Or turning the girl who stole the guy she was interested in into a friend.

Does Castela accept that reasoning? Not on the surface, but deep down?
We also still do not know if they went any farther over the last couple of years.
Pretty sure it has been, at most, months since Shawna asked Hiroshi out.
I am not sure if it was before or after the jump to high school.
Seems we missed a time skip somewhere!
and maybe not a strong rival either (for Hiroshi’s attention [/affections?])…?

Sometimes, just having someone to sit with you can be enough 😀
What this guy(?) said, definitely.
Which is exactly the role which Butterfly Hiroshi used to fill…
I always love Paul’s art, but had a hard time following this sequence…
Um. Yeah.
How so, it seems clear to me.
Yeah, don’t understand the confusion either

I’m thinking that if Shawna is there, she thinks *she* needs to talk to Castela. (Then again, I put the whole fiasco squarely on Hiroshi’s shoulders.)

I think I’ve said it before: Hiroshi is the Ado Annie of Gryphon High. If either of these girls wants him, they had better never leave his side.
That is most certainly not fair. Castella is to blame for her own bumbling around and inability/unwillingness to review her feelings.

On this page, Shawna reminds me of Reynir from “Stand Still, Stay Silent” for some reason…
Ship ahoy!
