What’s for Lunch
My first animated short. This was very exciting and nerve wracking, with geometric learning thrown in for good measure. Thankfully I was able to do quite a bit with familiar Photoshop, and After Effects and Premiere were not too hard to pick up. Work with the open source Blender was quite a bit harder. All also want to shout out a big thank you to vocal talent Jenna Birmingham who took on the role of Castela and all her ferocity. ^_^
Please check out more of Jenna’s work on her website here: https://here2voice.wixsite.com/jennabirmingham
as well as her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JennaAnneBirmingham/
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed it. =D
Much better on the hair volume! Loving these shorts. Blender is fun once you get past the first few projects and learn it. I almost wanna model one of your girls and rig it… but I think I’m mature enough to admit I’ll never get around to it.
Still, I wanna.
Hahahahahah! Great!
i laughed… that was funny
The explosions looked like 155mm Outgoing.
I had no idea she sounded like that.
Agreed, I always heard her as having a higher pitched voice in my head.
Captain Marvel would have a hard time keeping up with Castella, I think. O_o
Which one? Oh, right, the latest female version
Or are you talking about Shazam? o_O
Hey!, I was going to post ‘Which one?”
(but I fergot to hit ‘post comment’…)
I can’t remember the last time I watched a video, and had a big grin of appreciation on my silly face the whole time. Paul, that was excellent – thank you!
I think it’s pretty damn amazing. Great motion, simple but visually accurate. (I’m literally watching G1 Transformers and some of the walking animations are flat cringeworthy, and they were PAID to do that.) So, keep up the good work.
She needs a better bag, that closes more securely.
I’ll bet Katherine makes a good curry, though.
This is lots of fun, and both art and voice are in character. One little thing about the voice: For most of it, she sounds just like I would imagine Cass to sound. For her last two lines, however, she sounds much older, with a vocal timbre that I’d think of as coming from a much older woman — almost as though it was Kath speaking (swearing), rather than her daughter. Expression, etc., are just right, it’s just the tone that seems a little strange. But then, Cass is strange, so …
Great one !
This was lots of fun. I really got a feel for the kind of power that Pickle can unleash when she’s a bit out of sorts. A shame about that curry. Nice work all around.
The curry? Did you SEE what she did to that ROCK???
Well done! Blender is a tool with a steep learning curve – in large part because it’s a complex task that it’s trying to make easy. Keep at it!
This really gives a feel of what it’s like when she’s fooling around out in the canyons.
Has anyone mentioned how your art is reminiscent of that of Jamie Hewlett. Really awesome stuff.
This one really made me smile. Blender is a hard program to learn, but the results are spectacular. I’m going to watch it again!
Heh, that was really fun to watch this morning, thanks for that!
Very reminiscent of the earliest RWBY work.
For being a solo project this is truly outstanding.
I want more!
Right… so I feel dumb. I just realized that Canyon De Chelly was a real place… and not just a Wapsi Square Meta space…
way to educate via entertainment 😉
It’s also the reason why I think I hear some distant rumbling coming from the northeast.
Pronounced dee shay. There are little Navajo (navaho) family settlements all through the bottom of it. Cool place to visit.
As first animation efforts go, pretty darned good; you’ve got a good sense of timing and of visual action, you gave us varied views and established scale pretty well (though another longshot of Cas to confirm her size relative to the landscape might have helped those who don’t already know the setting and character), and you delivered the visual gag nicely. I might have wanted to see just a bit more shock /frustration/anger before that final blast to set up the punchline more strongly, but it works as is — despite the spoiler in the title, the solar got a moment of shock out of me. Good Foley work along with the voice acting.
Solar, not solar. Darned auto-incorrects.
Huh? “Splat”. S p l a t. I know I typed it correctly that time.
Great Pilot. Now which network bought it, FOX,NBC, AMAZON??????? What night is it gonna be on?
BBC America?
(Of course, that’d mean the production quality would be worse, somehow.)
WOW! The girl’s a freakin’ walking photon torpedo launcher for Chrissakes!
To mash-up a paraphrase:
“All my Shields are Down & All my Coll Points are Out the Window…”
sigh…
😂😂😂😂😂
Poor ‘Stela forgetting to secure her bag and losing lunch.
Awesome!
Should’ve called it “What’s for LAUNCH”…
very cool.
FINALLY caught up.
When the CORVID-19 crisis in 2020 started, I decided to read this (and other web comics) from the start to end.
Took almost 2 weeks.
now waiting anxiously for next update (while reading another web comic)
I have only one suggestion. A number of the backgrounds appear to be actual photographs of the area. You might want to posterize the backgrounds to make them more compatible with the style of the foreground images such as Castella and the backgrounds that were hand drawn. That would make them look more like part of the scene rather than simply pasted on top.
This is AWESOME! I can definitely understand her frustration …
And, I’d like to add that Jenna was perfect for Castela’s voice!
Don’t know if it helps: There’s a Blender fork called Bforartists, https://www.bforartists.de
Is there a Blender “course” somewhere? I have it. But I’m looking at a blank screen with tools around the edges, and I have no idea how to do anything.
This video is very similar to one I used when I was just getting started. https://youtu.be/Rqhtw7dg6Wk
