oops, that last line should have read “Just because a sphinx displays hands in a scene doesn’t mean she couldn’t have VERY SHARP claws in the next scene as well.”
Um, no. He deserves to find out he was wrong too late to avoid losing her. But that in no way justifies an ass-kicking. Alas, it’s all too possible that he’s about to get one anyway (which, even if it proves that she really is a sphinx, would mean that he wasn’t really wrong, wouldn’t it?).
Ok folks, in the up comming comic were going to learn a life lesson. Which is, When your GF rips a sandbag to shreds and nearly kills you(by accident), and then claims its because shes a sphinx. You should NEVER call her crazy, break up with her then walk away for one of two reasons. One being she really is crazy and is going to prove it, or two, she really is a sphinx and is going to prove it. 😀
He has all the proof he needs to know she isn’t crazy. He is rejecting what he already knows, rejecting the truth right before his eyes, and even though he is calling Shelly crazy, he is really saying it about himself.
Shelly’s crazy isn’t that she thinks she’s a supernatural being.
It’s that she cannot control her defensive response or her anger. As of this comic, it’s pretty clear that she doesn’t tolerate frustration well, either. She looks like she’s getting ready to show that puny human trash who’s boss. And he’d better love her, dammit, or else! (Tomorrow may tell a different tale, and I hope it does. But that’s the impression here.)
And “stronger”? No non-magical human is remotely strong enough to safely have a close relationship of any kind with Shelly, especially not as a lover.
Shelly is not the one with three gashes across her chest. Justin is not at fault here. He is, to be blunt, the aggrieved party.
He might listen to someone else explain Shelly’s situation and her response, to show that it’s not her fault (although his injury is still her responsibility). It would be great if he could then show the emotional and intellectual flexibility to express his sympathy and support, and very cautiously continue to meet with her. (Although being her lover is right out.)
But Justin owes Shelly nothing, if only because she failed to warn him up front what he was getting into, and that absolutely is her fault.
And until Shelly can control her reflexive lashing out at innocent play, or until Justin can be provided with an adequate defense, she needs to be restrained in the presence of humans.
on the little argument about what exactly a sphinx is…
In each and every mythology, a sphinx is a winged, intelligent, FELINE.
Other than the fact the wings have feathers, birds come nowhere close to the generality of a sphinx in any mythology.
talons are not associated with sphinxes, only claws and fangs.
the mythological critters with feline body parts that also wield talons are called chimeras, griffins, hippo-griffins, etc., never a sphinx.
as for the past strips where Shelly and Phix have hands instead of paws… I seem to have noticed a tendency to morph on both ladies.
Just because a sphinx displays hands in a scene doesn’t mean she could have VERY sharp claws as well.

Let him go Shelly, you need someone stronger.
