Asa far as I know, yesterday’s “mother hen” link provides the only thing Bud said in direct relation to Monica’s bullet-dodging, and it is difficult to ascertain just how Bud was “guarding” Monica, because she states that Monica dodged the bullets through her own luck.
But luck alone cannot explain the bullet holes in clothing with no visible damage to Monica herself…either Bud was doing something more than she’ll admit or Monica’s “luck” is yet another superpower…
That was part of my point yesterday.
If Bud was truly not guarding/protecting M from the bullets then my assertion that she involuntarily was passing the bullets in/through her into another realm puts all the credit with her even though it is very weak credit as she was not in control or even conscious of it.
If Bud was guarding/protecting M in some way – which it still appears such given the evidence then more credit to Bud and again M is the weaker for it.
The various clues point to some aspect of M protecting her however unconsciously or Bud is outright lying about things which again reinforces my dislike to the golem girls even more.
Bud said way back when that she had sent her “protection” with Monica when she went to get the other cloth. It may have only been a skin shield of some sort, and only temporary. Or, it could have had something similar to what Jin did to “save” Monica from the bus.
But Bud also said that Monica had dodged all the bullets though her own luck.
I really like the way Shelly points Monica towards the conclusion Shelly wants her to reach. Can’t tell her outright — she’ll balk. But lay out the facts and let Monica reason through it herself, and she’ll accept the result.
I’m liking the theory that she poited the bullets away when they made contact with her skin. It may be much like the shields used in Dune. It only works against high speed objects.
To give Monica some credit, she wasn’t told that Bud was with her in Cairo. Bud pretended otherwise and planted the idea that the gang members were bad shots. Even to Brandi, Bud said that Monica dodged the bullets “through her own luck,” rather than any special power.
Apparently, Bud told Shelly the same things she told Brandi. I don’t know why she wouldn’t have heard the original conversation with Brandi, though, so maybe she just wasn’t very precise yesterday. Monica was evidently changing out of her ruined clothing at the time, so she wouldn’t have heard anything. She must have wondered what caused the explosion that the newsman was talking about.
Anent your point about Shelly’s knowledge of the events in Cairo, they were all watching the news report on TV, so one can assume she was possibly listening in on Bud and Brandi’s conversation.
At first, it seemed that Monica was using the Vash the Stampede technique of bullet dodging to protect herself. Now, as it seems, it may be just skin deep.
Were the holes in Monica’s clothing really full fleged holes, or the sort of thing bullets might do to cloth stretched over some impervious substance? Perhaps the protection given to Monica was to make her skin bullet proof for that time. Or, Bud may be able to snap a force field tightly around people’s skin at will, rather than transmute the skin itself. Heck, if one can transfer the ink pattern from a tapestry to Shelly’s chest (and rip it off), perhaps they can do other things to human skin as well.
I’m still assuming that Bud wasn’t lying to Brandi and that Monica did, indeed – in whatever manner – manage to evade the bullets on her own, without Bud intervening.
I note we have here a case of pot, kettle, black – anyone, fitness nut or not, who can bounce an engine block all the way across a service bay in a fit of temper has some ‘enhancement’ going herself.
I look forward to any revelations of Justin’s status. Shall he be a permanent member of the staff? (A cop might prove to be useful.) Or does he come around once a week or so, after work, to be seized and dragged off to Shelly’s lair, emerging hours later, exhausted, sore, and grinning ear to ear?
Monica knows her reply , in the first panel , won’t float .
I think somebody’s got some explaining to do… Either Bud or Jin
“Luuuucy! Er, Buuud! You jgot some ‘splainin’ to do!”
Ok now even I want to know what Bud said.

I’d definitely like to see them go straightaway to Bud to get this sorted out…
I am starting to have my suspicions. Phix pointed out that being a glyph reader is not the same thing as just being able to read glyphs.
Perhaps there is a whole portfolio of talents involved.
You know what they say: If you can dodge bullets, you can dodge a wrench.
CLONK!
Not necessarily. High-speed, low-mass projectiles are defeated in entirely different ways than low-speed, high-mass ones.
~D.
The best way to dodge either is to not be where they are in the first place…
I thought it was just a matter of remembering the Five Ds– Dodge, Dive, Duck, Dip, and…. Dodge.
You got it! 🙂
LOL!
Justin Long would have been a goner if that was the way it went down at dodgeball practice…
Shelly is just too damned cheerful.
I think she is smirking at Monica. We are doing the same, right?
Maybe it’s because she knows she’s rocking that popped collar with aplomb!

Paraphrasing Monica: “Don’t you use that reverse psychology crap on me and it’s working, dammit!” 😀
Paul pointed out this strip yesterday; notice that Bud says Monica dodged the bullets on her own.
My comment above duplicates this line of reasoning. Something between Monica’s luck and Bud’s protection is pretty powerful stuff.
Woot! It has taken me two months of lunch breaks but I’ve just read through the entire archives! Air punch!
Welcome to waiting for weekday updates with the rest of us…
:: drums fingers waiting for Monday ::
Yeah, reading the archive was a blast because I was only limited by my own time and stamina. Now the wait is heinous!
Of course, being able to comment/discuss helps to pass the time! 🙂

Also, Monica knows how she screwed up the first poit in Cairo. Shelly wouldn’t know about that. That wasn’t exactly superheroic. 🙂

Or most of them, anyways.

Alas, the legal issue of grazing rights…
so, i’m curious as to the meaning of “painted on jeans”. sorry for my lack of knowledge of ladies’ fashion.
i’m guessing it’s just skin-tight, and not body paint.
