Tell her some of the Adventures-in-Dating that have gone on among the older crowd of Wapsi Square. Then it’ll be a cross between her feeling better and her rolling around on the floor laughing…
The reason is power. You fear that if you tell someone you like them, you also tell them they have power over you, and you’d rather not have them know they have that kind of power (or you don’t want to admit to yourself that they have it).
The smart thing to do is to make them aware of that power, and then see if they exercise it responsibly, but anxiety (aka trust issues) may stand in the way of that.
Aunt Bud nails it. I knew there was a good reason I was happy to see Bud, in particular, show up at the exact moment she did: Early enough for Pickle to talk it out with a trusted adult before going off to meet back up with Timmy, but not so soon that Pickle hadn’t had a chance to process any of it on her own and realize she needed the advice.
And that that trusted adult happened to be Bud in particular.
Which helps her have more in common with Castella. No, I can’t think of anyone, aside from maybe Katherine, who was more suited to this particular conversation at this particular time. I’m betting Pickle trusts her opinion more precisely because she doesn’t see her as much as an authority figure.
I take that last comment back. I was interrupted by a call from my mother and then explaining to an 8 year old why:
A. You shouldn’t interrupt people while they’re on the phone, and
B. You can’t just decide you’re going to have a weekly book club for all your friends without clearing it with your parents first.
just as I got done writing that, and came back to hit post before refreshing the page and seeing your second comment.
I have to wonder if Castella likes Bud especially because she doesn’t flinch. Even the Guardian of the Tree flinched when Castella was upset by the alienation she felt from being basically a human-sized WMD.
Bud is another human-sized WMD and probably one of four or five people on earth who are fully immune to a Castella Tantrum.
If you’re not willing to communicate, then there’s no sense in wasting your time chasing after someone. :\
And as Bud says, if you can’t even be honest with yourself then you have no hope of communicating with the one you’re chasing after.
They’re both so cute…
Aunt Bud for the win.
+5
Basically, Pickle, emotions can SUCK. All the time. No matter how old you get.
*led
Yes, led. Past tense of lead.

Also hormones, and incomplete frontal lobe development. In humans, anyway.
Bud’s always been a favorite of mine. This makes her even more so.

Bud is still, in many ways, an 18-year-old peasant girl.
…and, i meant to say, well-equipped to deal with sorting out this kind of thing for a confused tween/teen.
Brandi would certainly be helpful, too, but she’d approach it more on an intellectual level.
Jin … ghod knows.

More like a thousand dozen Bud.
