Think of negative energy as a sort of friction (for example, rug burn). Trying to hold onto it, release it, guide it, swing it over your head, etc. only causes friction which builds up more energy.
It very slowly reduces ON IT’S OWN.
Not reacting to it at all is the only way to eliminate it. It builds up faster than it bleeds off if you do react to it.
What the hell am I talking about? Habit. You’ve trained your brain to explode in anger. Now you must train it to not. Easier said than done, but it’s awesome for your blood pressure if you do!
Sometimes this works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Everyone’s different. Some release their stress through venting, and it works, because not venting just lets it grow and fester until you explode. Some release stress through just letting it go, recognizing that it’s no big deal. Other people have other outputs. My friend draws. I write stories. It works differently for everyone.
I tried, some times pretty desperately, for 15 years, to find a way to permanently ignore/smother/undercut/dismantle my temper. I’ve been much happier ever since I gave up trying to change myself, and just accepted that I’m an angry person. Oh, I still fight it, mind you, but on a case-by-case basis.
If you’re young, and you struggle with anger…take EVERY suggestion you see, hear, or think of, and write it somewhere. Try each one for a month solid. Try combinations of them for a month solid. Give it your all, too. No matter how stupid or backwards it seems, give it your best shot, and give it time to work. We all have something we would like to go back in time to train/prepare ourselves for, this is mine.
If “not reacting” works for you, very good, I envy you. I gather that it does work for many. If you can figure out how to rewire your brain to where you don’t need to vent, very good, I envy you. If you can’t, know when to cut your losses. Don’t beat your head against a brick wall your whole life. Some stuff helps. Most doesn’t. Absolutely nothing seems to even approximate a long-term solution, for me.
But MikeB, personally, not reacting means I’m holding it in. All pressure vessels have limits, and my options are vent now, OR explode. Additionally, I find anger to be much like fire – the hotter it gets, the better it is at acquiring fuel.
When we get angry, (at least if it’s a fiery anger – cold anger is foreign to me) our bodies dump a lot of energy into our blood stream, and if that energy’s not used, it just keeps floating around until it solidifies into cholesterol. “Not venting,” for us, is actually detrimental to our health.
P.S., yes, I know these comments are 8.5 years old. This is an important subject to me.
There is no such thing as “negative energy”, physically speaking. Energy only ranges from zero towards infinity. And swinging something above your head requires transforming the potential energy of the system into kinetic energy. Both of those are obviously positive (as in, above zero), otherwise no movement would be possible. Feelings and emotions also always represent positive energy. Specifically the electromagnetic energy of neural impulses, caused by electrochemical reactions in the brain, fueled by transforming the potential energy stored in food, into heat.
Negative is a word that can mean several things. In this case, it means “destructive energy.” It’s stress that doesn’t get any positive/good/creative outlet, and finds a negative/bad/destructive one instead.
Technically, from the point of view of movement, electrons are positive. They were misnamed before anyone knew that, so we’re stuck with calling them negative. It’s merely a convention.
In science the definition of energy is context dependent. For example two body Newtonian gravity: the bodies can follow elliptical paths (bound) around the center of mass. in which case the associated energy is negative, or hyperbolic paths (unbound) in which case the associated energy is positive. Switch to relativistic physics and the sign of energy is defined by the relationship between the local time and the global time, the usual convention is to arrange things to make the energy positive. Assuming that has been done the gravitationally bound system has a positive energy less than the rest mass energy; in the unbound system the energy is positive and greater than the rest mass energy.
Negatron: You might be right from a scientific viewpoint. However, from life experience, I can vouch for the fact that negative energy DOES exist. You know it when you feel it. That science can’t label it and put it in a nice little jar yet only shows how deficient it still is, for all it’s accomplished for mankind.
My version of 2 cents: Negative energy: anger, fear, hatred, and condemning, along with CHOOSING to act upon and direct it at others with an intent to hurt, harm, kill. Many CHOOSE to inflict this upon others (venting) instead of resolving, healing, letting go. There is no simple way to resolve the anger, hatred, condemnation, and fear, IF ONE IS WILLING except self-examination going inward to discover and understand the fear triggering all of these. With this inner self-discovery one can eventually understand self more, possibly reaching a point where one can CHOOSE to bring forth mercy, forgiveness, and compassion. As Christ said, “for man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” Even healing our anger, fear, hatred and letting go of our condemnation of others becomes possible.
So–if venting negative energy doesn’t help, how can it be reduced?

By grounding it out.
Ask Dr. Sanity.
Best way to release negative energy… Sports or excercize! 😀
Wap-si Squa-are!
Come-on-an’ raaise-up!
Take yah hate off, and spin it ‘roun’ yo head-SPIN-IT-LIKE-A-HELI-COPTA

Isn’t electrical energy negative? I mean, electrons are the negative pole (grin).

Negatron, sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
Thank you Jaqui, (and Paul), for that reminder. I needed that.
looking at who I am today, I wonder how much this particular strip affected my growth as a person. (in a very positive way)
