I’m not so sure it’s all that sudden. I had noticed something similar already in some of the panels on Monday and Tuesday, but it might just be a matter of her slits not being visible from the side. I noticed that she has mostly round pupils in the top panel today, so maybe that becoming normal for a bit to answer Bud, then she reverted when she was challenged.
Now that would be an interesting episode of Mythbusters. Mythbusters meets Ghostbusters! I already love both, but the marriage of the two…Ghost Mythbusters, could be genius! 🙂
That begs the question – how ‘human’ are the GGs? They apparently look enough human to pass in normal society. They apparently feel enough human that they can have normal relationships with us humans.
They eat and drink (and get drunk). and Bud’s tummy-door aside, they seem solid enough that they don’t ring when bumped into or fall down.
When in human form, they are as human as Tepoz could make that form. Depending on the situation, Jin’s eyes often look snake-like, even when she is in human form, but other than that and their teeth, I don’t think it would be possible to tell the difference.
They can be put into a statue form, which was how Tepoz was when Monica found him, but when they aren’t in that form, there is no reason to think that they are at all stone-like. But of course, they have magic at their disposal, so if they want to be harder than a rock, they can be harder than a rock.
Given that it would only be 70 degrees F (about 21 degrees C) in Cairo in the morning, steam coming from her breath isn’t an indicator of how cold it is in Giza…
Not steam — condensation. Her breath is so cold it’s causing water vapor to become fog / water droplets.
Though that is also what “steam” over boiling water is — water, transformed into gas, condensing back into tiny liquid droplets as it rises into air too cold to have that much water vapor dissolved into it.
Makes sense. I’m no morning person… it comes too early in the day. If I could teleport around to beautiful places to watch the sun rise (as oppose to watch it rise over the other apartments in the complex) then I totally would.
Yes, but the other panels didn’t show the cold air thing. In afterthought though, and from what Paul said, I believe the cold air originated from Jin’s body and not any cold air that might be present. A potentially ominous sign.
Whoa! That’s cold. I can see how she could produce super hot fire breath, since that just takes energy, and she would have plenty, but producing cold of that magnitude must be quite a trick. Perhaps she has a direct, supernatural conduit to the cold of deep space? Or she is just as capable of removing heat as producing it.
Right. Bud was exaggerating. Bud thinks that poiting to a different place just to be able to catch the sunrise at a convenient time makes the sunrise seem rather artificial. It would be a bit like making the sun come up whenever it was convenient to watch it. That would remove all of the specialness of it.
I have to admit that my reaction was Woah! Bud! She still has some issues of her own, apparently.
Hmm…I didn’t react that way at all to Bud’s mini-critique. Then again, I didn’t think about it as her critiquing the actions of a pouty yet über-powerful child.
If she’d said it to me, I’d not react poorly, but I’m mostly stable. Considering how concerned she looked when she showed up, maybe she should have used more tact.
Yeah, I was overstating it a bit. It’s probably more like kids squabbling. But, I’d also say that Jin is beyond pouty and Bud knows that, so just forgetting to be tactful was significant. Also, Paul switched them from sitting side-by-side to a confrontational arrangement. I was reacting as much to that as anything Bud said.
Bud, m’dear, just because it isn’t as magical to you doesn’t mean it’s not every bit as magical for Jin. Personally, I think the landscape she’s chosen would add to the magic, not subtract from it. And I certainly wouldn’t want to take such a harmless comfort from someone who most certainly needs what happiness she can get…
I think Bud is giving Jin a hard time because doing things the easy way isn’t always the best way of dealing with stuff. Especially feelings. A simple diversion – yes, but sometimes diversions (avoidance) can be a bad thing.
That’s an example of a type of transference, I think. It’s like someone who has trouble controlling their own weight tending to lash out at someone else who is overweight. In Bud’s case, she still has guilt over the harm she caused with her own supernatural power, so she sometimes lashes out at anyone who uses their powers, unless it’s obviously for a good purpose. She also has a fair amount of resentment of Jin being the most powerful and manipulative of the three.
I think that’s still Jin talking, but Jin is more under the control of the ghost. I consider the ghost as being part of Jin and having varying amounts of control over her.
What’s “this”? I have a bad feeling that what we’re seeing is steam, and dear Jin is preparing to somehow manage self-immolation. Whether she’ll emerge from it would then be an open question.
Good point. Does she mean “this” as her poiting to the sphinx, or does “this” refer to what she is doing now? Whatever it is. And it is cold breath. Paul indicated it’s about the temp. of liquid nitrogen vapors.
Immolation? Pablo says “cold”. If she’s going to do it herself, maybe this is how she would empty the “vessel” that is her golem body? Or is this a reference to becoming a type of phoenix? The ancient Egyptians had a version called the “Bennu Bird”.
Oh, good twist that would be. Perhaps her trip here was for more than just watching the sunrise. Could it be she wanted to see it one more time before doing something drastic? Something that would mean never seeing another sunrise? Maybe lock herself away in the Sphinx. I guess we’ll soon find out, but it’s fun to speculate.
I just noticed the switch from sunrise to sunset. Sunrise just wouldn’t work as well, would it? Then again, it might work for JOLT brand x-tra nicotine caffeinated cigarettes or something like that.
Yes, usually over an aboe. They are much more intense, and much more disturbing, than the garden-variety feelings. And feelongs over violens, trompbones, and harpsicords can lead to mayhem in the orchestra pit.
I believe feelongs mostly just last a greater length of time than normal feelings. Google shows many examples of the word feelongs. You have to put it in quotes to force it to do a search for that spelling, however. Feelshorts, on the other hand, produced no results.
Uh oh. What have I wrought? There is a saying that goes something like “You may create whatever you can imagine but be aware. Once created, it may exist for all eternity. Create well or suffer the consequences.”
FYI: +feelongs is another way of specifying only “feelongs” in Google’s syntax.
BTW, the transcripts for the strips are also indexed by Google, but the Wapsi website search engine can’t search them. The transcripts don’t go very far back yet, either.
Emotionally immature (or damaged or both) + all powerful = bad. Jin is at a point where she has nothing to do and a lot of power to do it with. The misuse of power starts with little acts and snowballs from there, Bud may be trying to keep Jin from starting down that path. With great power comes great responsibility. Tread lightly grasshopper…
“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice. ”
And given Bud and Jin, I think I’d take either end of that bet.
Mayans(I believe also Aztecs?) said the world ends multiple times that science has found proof and agreeance with: Fire (awakened volcanoes), Ice (age), Water (the flooding after Ice Age), I forget what the Mayans called it, but the shifting of the continental plates to create the current continents …… and Darkness, which may be the supposed restart at 2012. I think/hope this may be touched on eventually in this comic somehow….
I say the world will never end. It will simply change, and we will change with it or perish. In either case the world does not now, nor will it ever, know or care we even existed.
Oh Kay. As long as you let the sun come up, you can do as you please.
Um—what’s up with the smoke coming out of Jin’s mouth?
I thought it was her hands..?
Very cold air coming out of Jin.
That and the suddenly vacant eyes? A wee bit disturbing/worrisome.
“Wee bit”?
I’m not so sure it’s all that sudden. I had noticed something similar already in some of the panels on Monday and Tuesday, but it might just be a matter of her slits not being visible from the side. I noticed that she has mostly round pupils in the top panel today, so maybe that becoming normal for a bit to answer Bud, then she reverted when she was challenged.
Hmmm…doesn’t traditional ghost theory state that when they get angry the temperature drops? Maybe the ghostie possessing Jin is upset.
Oooh, sounds like something for Mythbusters to test!
Actually, I never heard of that. I knew cold is often associated with ghosts in general, but there is a lot that I wouldn’t know.
Rising emotion was the reason for the temperature drop around the ghosts in the Sixth Sense.
Now that would be an interesting episode of Mythbusters. Mythbusters meets Ghostbusters! I already love both, but the marriage of the two…Ghost Mythbusters, could be genius! 🙂

It looks more like smoke going IN to her mouth.
Um … eyes. Steaming breath …

Makes sense. I’m no morning person… it comes too early in the day. If I could teleport around to beautiful places to watch the sun rise (as oppose to watch it rise over the other apartments in the complex) then I totally would.
…not sure how pretty downtown Cairo is, though…
Actually it doesn’t make sense since Cairo is technically “uptown”. The sun rises eight hours earlier in Cairo than it does in Minneapolis.
Ruh-roh . . .
I intentionally did not read any comments before i typed the next comment…
Ruh Roh, Raggy!
that has to be some VERY BAD morning breath!
“If the Good Lord meant for me to see the sunrise, it would happen much later in the day!”
…
Wait a minute.
Bud is saying Jin’s not much of a morning person?
Uh Huh.
Which means Bud’s not much of a decaf person.
I’m more of a sunset fan myself, preferably from hawaii
That’s the beauty of a poit. You could enjoy sunrise over Macau, then enjoy the sunset over Maui in a couple of hours.
So how come we just now see the cold breath thing?
The desert can be very cold at night and Egypt is no exception. Winter conditions of 80sF/30sC by day and 40sF/5sC at night is not uncommon.
Yes, but the other panels didn’t show the cold air thing. In afterthought though, and from what Paul said, I believe the cold air originated from Jin’s body and not any cold air that might be present. A potentially ominous sign.
Indeed.
Straight from the source–ominous sign!
*visualizes robot waving its arms saying “Warning warning, danger danger run will Robinson run!”*
The lack of eyeballs isn’t particularly reassuring either.
Her expression has kind of gone blank, too. None of this can be good. I hope Cairo – and the Earth, for that matter – are around tomorrow…
Is cold breath visible in cold air, or just warm breath?
Have you seen what liquid nitrogen looks like poured from a vial? It’s that cold.
Does she? I know that Bud has the fire breath, but have the other two shown that?
Easiest way to piss someone off? Argue semantics.
Well, technically you are incorrect…
(Couldn’t resist. You set `em up…)
So Jin’s trying to give Bud the “cold sholder?”
That said, she really needs to work within ordinary constraints. It would dramatically help with her new/old problem…
And Paul? Shouldn’t that be “vial” rather than “vile?”
In this particular case, I think “Vile” is the correct term.
Hey! He can edit his comments! It’s not fair! 😀
Actually, it took me a while to figure out where he said either one.
umm
has jin decided to change the time the sun comes up just so she can watch it or is it just when its shown in egypt?
as a non-morning person myself i can see how this can be good ^^ missed a few sunrises myself due to love of snoozing 🙂
Nah…Jin just poited to a place where the sun was coming up so she could watch it when she wanted to.
Right. Bud was exaggerating. Bud thinks that poiting to a different place just to be able to catch the sunrise at a convenient time makes the sunrise seem rather artificial. It would be a bit like making the sun come up whenever it was convenient to watch it. That would remove all of the specialness of it.

Also, Paul switched them from sitting side-by-side to a confrontational arrangement. I was reacting as much to that as anything Bud said.
I think Bud is probably still learning the concept of “tact”. (Just what I’m thinkin’ on the subject.)
Bud, m’dear, just because it isn’t as magical to you doesn’t mean it’s not every bit as magical for Jin. Personally, I think the landscape she’s chosen would add to the magic, not subtract from it. And I certainly wouldn’t want to take such a harmless comfort from someone who most certainly needs what happiness she can get…
Agreed. Makes you wonder why Bud would give her a hard time about a simple diversion. Well, simple for an all powerful golem.
And I wonder who is saying the line in the last panel? Jin or something else? Jin, as such, seems to be out of it.
I think that’s still Jin talking, but Jin is more under the control of the ghost. I consider the ghost as being part of Jin and having varying amounts of control over her.
I think Jin’s pretty enough to earn the right to do anything she darn well pleases.
I wholeheartedly concur.
…and if you don’t agree, she’ll julienne your face.
Learnt that trick from her mom.
Well, I’m hoping she doesn’t try to Julienne Bud’s face. Think of the collateral damage that could cause.
And she’ll use those awesomely strong fingernails for it …. <..>
Aaaaah, I kinda think that maybe a possessing spirit might be manifesting itself. Either that or Jins sprung a leak?
My thoughts exactly.
…to do THIS as I please.” (emphasis added)?
What’s “this”? I have a bad feeling that what we’re seeing is steam, and dear Jin is preparing to somehow manage self-immolation. Whether she’ll emerge from it would then be an open question.
Or, it could just be cold breath…
“This” is to poit herself anywhere she wants anytime she wants for any reason, however trivial.
Good point. Does she mean “this” as her poiting to the sphinx, or does “this” refer to what she is doing now? Whatever it is. And it is cold breath. Paul indicated it’s about the temp. of liquid nitrogen vapors.
Opps. Shuda been joined with J2p2’s comment, above.
Immolation? Pablo says “cold”. If she’s going to do it herself, maybe this is how she would empty the “vessel” that is her golem body? Or is this a reference to becoming a type of phoenix? The ancient Egyptians had a version called the “Bennu Bird”.

NEWPORT
For that refreshing flavor that says I’ll enjoy whatever motherfucking sunset I want to goddamnit!
Heehee…That would be a cigarette ad I could appreciate…and I don’t smoke. 🙂
I just noticed the switch from sunrise to sunset. Sunrise just wouldn’t work as well, would it? Then again, it might work for JOLT brand x-tra nicotine caffeinated cigarettes or something like that.
Now those cigarettes sound tempting…which is pretty impressive. 🙂
Jin is a brat.
Coming Soon: “War of the Golem-Girls“
If she were cold enough…
That’s not sweat… it’s condensation!
So what is going on here? What does Jin mean when she says “doing this”…what is “this”?
…I have the feelong something really cool or really disturbing or all of the aboe is about to happen! C’mon, midnight!!
…Ever have one of those feelongs, anyone? 😛
Yes, usually over an aboe. They are much more intense, and much more disturbing, than the garden-variety feelings. And feelongs over violens, trompbones, and harpsicords can lead to mayhem in the orchestra pit.

Uh oh. What have I wrought? There is a saying that goes something like “You may create whatever you can imagine but be aware. Once created, it may exist for all eternity. Create well or suffer the consequences.”

Is Jin about to have a hissy fit? It looks like Jin is about to have a hissy fit.
Tina did say something about a little girl with the power to flatten the sun. Could be a 6 year old’s snit fit over being questioned about to happen.
Not … exactly what was said.
Now we have to figure … is it coming out of her … or is it going into her???
Out, cold sinks, and at the temperature Paul stated, it sinks rather fast.
Of course all this may simply be the prelude to a massive golem burp, kicking up a brief, but nasty, and smelly local sandstorm.
Aww…that’s just… *grimaces* I pity the Egyptians.
