Brandi is unloading her angst by the ton, and it’s not slowing down. Likely she is working up to the largest personal grief she bears and is soon going to dump it on Monica.
The problem is, once she bares her soul that way, then what?
The gift of insight is two-edges sword indeed. She may be dispelling the illusion that she is a bad person by discovering that she actually IS a Bad Person. And when she gets to that point, the options quickly become anything from violent denial, violent self punishment, psychotic fugue, personality transference/split (Tina is a coherent example of this), or even catatonia. Transcendence and self acceptance are waaaay down on the list at the moment.
On the other hand, at some point all this soul-anguish crap, built up over millennia, will come out, with the same possibilities that you list. And, like earthquakes, the longer the wait, the more crap gets stored up–and the greater the resulting damage. Worse, with an immortal, it’s gonna happen sooner or later.
Perhaps this is a time to let it happen–when there are others around to help deal with the outcome, and maybe help Brandi find a good resolution.
Especially since Monica, and now Jin, are on a time limit.
I got a feeling it will be one humdinger of a cliffhanger. But it will be nice to see more about the deal that Brandy made with the Demons. Still a lot of unanswered question about the Calendar Machine machinations.
I’m thinking it’s more of, she’s a pedestrian, where she’s walking when the rest of the world is running around, or driving, riding, flying, moving at high speed, and she’s not. Part of that may be playing the part of a ditz or an airhead.
I don’t think it’s that the rest of the world was moving fast – the opposite, rather. It sounds like she realised that she was becoming detached from humanity, and chosen to limit herself in some way, to become more human again.
Which suggests that if you think she’s intelligent now, she must have been terrifyingly so before…
Right, the pedestrian means acting, and perhaps appreciating, the ordinary. For some, it is one of the hardest burdens of maintaining peace and civilization: Just not misbehaving.
So she chooses to be pedestrian while the rest of us walk, run or drive because her only other mode is to transform into a stealth fighter-bomber.
…But which day(s) she is talking about is confusing.
Previously this conversation, it sounded like the Lanthian priests made her who she was that day, and that the deal was struck shortly after. (It sounded like it was within a time frame where the priests would care about her “deal”, even if they never found out about it.)
But today’s strip suggests the deal was struck after her reassembly as a human-shaped golem, since she was “under Tepoz’s care”. Lanthis was pretty gone by then. Vast eras of time are being jumped around–though that could be perfectly natural to Brandi.
But I’ve already calculated on the timeline that Tepoz certainly existed while the girls were being murdered. He’s prevaricated once about “coming along” a long time after that.
So “the day” is the day of the death of Lanthian daycare baby. But “the deal” (with demons, presumably) may not have occurred until much later.
Though it still could have. We’ll see. Not going to get angry at Tepoz, either. We don’t really yet know his early story of becoming “a real boy”.
As for your first part. Don’t forget that there were other imortals in the room with the CM was started. Not only Timekeepers, but Monica and Phix said that starting the CM was a big deal, politicians were deffently there. Why not religious leaders. Although more then likely the individual priest wouldn’t be effected, the one behind them could be the target of Brandi’s revenge.
Presumably Brandi is talking about the deal with Monica’s demons and/or Tina’s demons, which happened in the previous time loop. I don’t know how Brandi knows about it, though. Maybe the previous loop Brandi wrote about it in the book, but then Brandi wouldn’t have been so surprised at all the manipulation.
You’re probably right about it being the day of the killing of the newborn. Perhaps the incident provided the basic motivation for her later plotting a horrific vengence on Lanthis. It brought out her full brainac powers and she set a plan into motion with the help of something from the dark side. She probably had lots of time to think while being tortured.
A plan still unfolding. It may be she not only planned how to destroy Lanthis, but to outwit the entity from whom she sought help. Trying to outwit the devil kind of thing.
Possible. That statement could have referred to Cycle#56-Brandi + Nudge & other Tina-demons’ attempt to kill mortal Tina-1.0 and Monica, who at that point Phix assumed to be part of the “memory-reset” Tina 2.0 (until Phix found out she was still active and separate from the Tina 2.0 committee in ‘dramatic’ fashion to say the least).
Or, as you just stated, could imply they did MORE damage than simply killing/almost-killing two mortals.
Hmm… Monica doesn’t seem old enough for that day to have been November 12, 1955. (>^_^)>
There is no reason that I can imagine that any demons speaking with Brandi post-Chimera could not have ultimately been reassigned as Tina’s demons.
Brandi’s own demons from when she was alive might well be the emotions mixed into her clay. So the Demon World might have a grudge against Lanthis, too.
Paul seems to vetoed the thought that Brandi’s original “demons” (in life, if any) were Demon World entities mixed in her ashes (down in Jay-Em’s 6:47 am thread). Those were just her “negative emotions”.
It does raise some questions about the differences between Demons and demons… Do the entities feed off the emotions, or are they replacements, as the hollow-Monica sequence suggested? It can be tricky to parse the semantics, like when Monica was referring to the GGs as “demons” early on.
But about… the Deal. That’s not just Brandi making compromises with her emotional state. The last Deal with Demons we saw was Bud and May escaping the Demon World, with Bud explaining that they were running from Demons not in on their deal.
The Demons in Bud’s deal got Jin’s Doubt overthrown: Whatever their rules state, Jin’s Doubt was getting used to being the center Demon–the Rogue Queen–because of the CM’s focus on Jin herself. The threat of
‘replacing Jin with Monica’ was real enough for M’s Doubt to rally the troops away from allegiance. So some Demons got something they wanted out of that deal.
Time for a sit-down and another Busty-Mom-Hug me thinks…
Poor Brandy. Basically having to switch off part of who you are. 🙁
One cannot say Brandi doesn’t take her responsabilities and moral consciousness serious.
By the by. Wouldn’t it be nice if this sudden stream of mea culpa from Brandy, would lead to Monica finally truly bonding with one of her “monsters”( quoting Shelly)
Both seem the truly booky-kind of thinkers, M has fought her guilt-demons succesfully, Brandy is on the middle of it.
I have been leafing through all books, and nowhere has M really bonded with the GGG. It was always her ” human” friends (except Sell, but that’s another bag’o apples) that she connected to.
She mostly treated the GG as a minor irritant, and a responsability thrust upon her. But a heart-wrenching confession, and a desperate cry for help and, yes, a true friend, seems to be going on here..
Orrrr.. I am just wishful thinking..could be..
I don’t know, I think Monica has bonded pretty well with Bud, who was the first to show outward signs of emotional trama. It’s all the more heartrending to realize that Bud’s issues came up first because they were right under the surface. Once The GGG’s permanant drunk was dispelled, Bud started dealing with her past pretty quickly, and Monica stepped up to offer what support she could.
Jin Kept M at arms length, but when she started falling apart Monica showed every effort to try and help fix her. Monica is genuinely upset that Jin is going to die eventualy, despite the fact that death will probably come at the end of a normal human lifespan.
And dear God, poor Brandi. I think Monica has been laboring under the assumption (along with the rest of us) that Brandi had her stuff together and was the least damaged of the Three. That Brandi was the rock everyone else could hold onto if everything went pearshaped. M is finding out that Brandi is likely the most damaged and that she kept it buried deep down.
Monica focused her attention where she thought it was needed and assumed Brandi didn’t need as much as the other two. And now she’s gonna feel guilty as Hell.
Nah, I didn’t see Monica doing that much to help Jin despite the fact that Jin asked. Bud even had to tell Monica what Maya did to Jin.
I pretty much agree with what Jay-Em said, except I think that Bud and Brandi aren’t supposed to have demons. I think I remember Paul saying it and I think that’s why the rogue demons had no chance of finding out about the trap that the previous loop’s Brandi and this loop’s Bud had set up. Yes, I know that Brandi said something about not having to listen to her demons anymore very early on, but I think we are supposed to ignore that.
What Paul said, i wasn’t referring to Brandi’s ” demons” as the creepy-scary apparitions that , especially in the beginning- always slithered and whirled around M.. (again, thanks a bundle Paul, for scaring the heebies outta me with those piccies, their crazy patterns and freaky eyes..* shiver* faar too close to the nightmares that haunted my earliest childhood 🙂 )
Brandi has ehh, how’s that word? “Metaphorical”
Hmm.. i tend to see Monica more as a mentor, mother of the orphanage-kind of person to the GG.
She does not treat them, or acts around them, like she does with Shelly and Amanda. I just figured that it would be nice if one of the GG would become a kind of soulmate, and I see that as a true possibility with Brandi and Monica. ( wait.. That name-combi rings a bell somewhere…. Hmm..)
I suddenly remember that Brandi took Monica to the library, a place that Brandi obviously was very fond of… Could that have been a shy, clumsy try to make a true friend? It is entirely possible that, besides the fact that Phix was needed to fix ( heheh yea yeah, i know)all that was wrong with the CM, Brandi was also trying to connect by showing someone something that was very important to her. Trying the only way she knew how, being an aspie and all.
*or not, aleister just has a whiplash, I need a full-out chiropractic cracking& wrecking by now… 😀 *
Monica seemed to make a conscious decision to push Bud and Brandi to develop some independence (get a job, for example), which was probably good for them. If they were too close, there may have been too much of a tendency to have a boss/subordinate relationship. Now that Brandi and Bud are more established, maybe that’s not so true now.
I think you are reading a bit too much into the trip to the library, though. Monica asked Brandi to take her. Still, Brandi was friendly to Monica during the entire conversation. Back then it didn’t look like Brandi would have trouble bonding with anyone.
Sounds like “Saving Brandi from whatever…”
Is going to be the next Thrilling adventure/Chapter of Wapsi Square.
(Dang this would make a great series. Too bad J.Lo is so tall. Perhaps she could be Monicas’ Voice. Maybe Maria Carey Hmmmm.)
Although, in a sense it does: by “fixing” Jin, the pressure on Brandi was increased–her guilt at letting humans, especially the children in her charge, die, just as Jin will now inevitably die.
Another factor may be from Jin being better mentally, so that now Brandi does not have to be the strong, “healthy” one–she’s free to have her own long-delayed breakdown.
Hmm.. Could it be that the CM wasn’t -maybe by accident- also connected to Brandi somehow?
Think of it. You mentioned feeling a strange character/attitude inconsistent, change in Brandi’s character… Yet, only after the crushing of the CM, Brandi loses it.
Unless Bud poits in and forcibly constrains her, or Monica has just enough time and quick-thinking to cry the Lanthian variation of “STOP” thereby shutting Brandy down for the moment.
I doubt any galaxy-shattering is going to occur.. The scary smile is gone. She is just crying helplessly… look at her posture.. i may be an Aspie, but Brandi’s slumped posture indicates a sudden deflation of all energy…orrr I am completely wro….. …peep… …peep… …peep…
*fshshshshsh* ” we are sorry, the galaxy you tried to reach is no longer available.”
I agree with you, Jay-Em. She looks broken, not ready to take on the world, but vulnerable. This is the moment she can be reached and, just possibly, helped.
Interesting – no Friday cliffhanger after this. So this is the end of this discussion. And now it is clear what Brandi is talking about. She is guilty about her deal with Tina’s demons, setting up the deaths of Tina and Monica. She might even be behind what happened in Shelley’s vision quest.
Have we ever seen Brandy and nudge together? They might be avoiding each other, each knowing the blood on their hands, each fearful of their machinations becoming clear to everybody else.
And maybe, if we’re really lucky, we’ll find out what the deal was tomorrow.
And whether it’s entirely a thing in the past, or
(cue ominous music)
whether it’s still an active and ongoing involvement with Somebody or SomeThing.
Folks, it’s going to be ugly. Very ugly.
Is she baring her soul? Or is she revealing that she sold it?
Also – a while back someone said “We may be dealing with a haunted golem.” We all kind of assumed they were talking about Jin, but now….
She sold her soul for… Jin’s termination?
On the other hand, at some point all this soul-anguish crap, built up over millennia, will come out, with the same possibilities that you list. And, like earthquakes, the longer the wait, the more crap gets stored up–and the greater the resulting damage. Worse, with an immortal, it’s gonna happen sooner or later.
Perhaps this is a time to let it happen–when there are others around to help deal with the outcome, and maybe help Brandi find a good resolution.
Especially since Monica, and now Jin, are on a time limit.
More likely outcome: we’ll learn just enough about the deal to keep us talking all weekend.
Yeah. With this buildup she’s going to have to fess to Monica about the Deal.
But there’s no guarantee we get to hear it anytime soon.
And tomorrow being Friday you can bet that the details of the deal are going to be… interesting.
I got a feeling it will be one humdinger of a cliffhanger. But it will be nice to see more about the deal that Brandy made with the Demons. Still a lot of unanswered question about the Calendar Machine machinations.
Beginning to look like she cut a deal with something in the demon world. But she did it when ubder Tepoz’s care and not while in the pit. I think.
Awwww… Brandi’s crying really hurts to watch… 🙁
Don’t you just want to HUG her?!?
Actually I really want to run in the other direction.
Only useful when You got a hyper-drive ready…… Otherwise, don’t bother.
I’m in the hug camp myself.
^^Asam I, as am I.
Me too–for compassion, foremost.
And, then, including the selfish reasons that it might help avoid the cataclysm
Okay. I’m totally lost now. To what day is she referring? Become a pedestrian?
I dunno about “a” pedestrian, but “pedestrian” as an adjective means “common” or “prosaic” or “unremarkable”.
I’m thinking it’s more of, she’s a pedestrian, where she’s walking when the rest of the world is running around, or driving, riding, flying, moving at high speed, and she’s not. Part of that may be playing the part of a ditz or an airhead.

So she chooses to be pedestrian while the rest of us walk, run or drive because her only other mode is to transform into a stealth fighter-bomber.
yes, basically..
bad girl + counseling by tepoz = ‘survivable’ girl 🙂
I believe she’s referring to the day she struck out at the priest but instead…
…But which day(s) she is talking about is confusing.
Previously this conversation, it sounded like the Lanthian priests made her who she was that day, and that the deal was struck shortly after. (It sounded like it was within a time frame where the priests would care about her “deal”, even if they never found out about it.)

No, the priests weren’t there. They were the enemies of the people starting the calendar machine.

aaand back to the other subject…
dammit brandi you making me dizzy…
well
she DID cut a deal with Tina’s demons.
but we knew that right?
maybe she cut a deal with other demons for them to be able to use her body if she became human?
But what kind f deal did she cut? And at what cost?
She cut a deal with Tina’s demons?
Could that deal have anything to do with this?
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/relish-your-ignorance/
Possible. That statement could have referred to Cycle#56-Brandi + Nudge & other Tina-demons’ attempt to kill mortal Tina-1.0 and Monica, who at that point Phix assumed to be part of the “memory-reset” Tina 2.0 (until Phix found out she was still active and separate from the Tina 2.0 committee in ‘dramatic’ fashion to say the least).

she might have known ‘doc’ though… :p

Very interesting thoughts.

Brandi got to “help” as her part of her Deal.
What did the Demons get out of it?
Well, the doubt demons got permission to nose flick.
Jin’s Doubt was not so fortunate. If we are to believe Phix.
Oh.
Ohhhhhh.
Oh my. Hm.
Remember, Brandi introduced Mon to Phixy.
“You could have had Brandi stop me, but didn’t. However, I can’t be harmed in here.”
Hmmmmm…..
*strokes imaginary beard*
Time for a sit-down and another Busty-Mom-Hug me thinks…
Poor Brandy. Basically having to switch off part of who you are. 🙁
One cannot say Brandi doesn’t take her responsabilities and moral consciousness serious.
The last hug didn’t end well for Monica though…
Mweh.. What’s a couple of dislocated vertebrae among friends…. 😛
Ummm…. painful? As in, “You owe me a double-extra-sized custard for that” sort of painful?
Fish fingers are optional.
Still, i’d settle for that..just look at Brandi.. Aaand as the golems seemingly feel feel squishy..( ask Alan)
Again..LOOK at her.. Worth it! Totally worth it! 😀
Jay-Em: that will be the perception filter… only an ‘engineer’ can see past that and access the ‘hatch’ .. 🙂
Never let it be said that a golem doesn’t have a soul. These girls are more human than many meatbags I know.
By the by. Wouldn’t it be nice if this sudden stream of mea culpa from Brandy, would lead to Monica finally truly bonding with one of her “monsters”( quoting Shelly)

Thanks for clarifying that.
Um, that goes for both of you. 😀
Hmm.. i tend to see Monica more as a mentor, mother of the orphanage-kind of person to the GG.
She does not treat them, or acts around them, like she does with Shelly and Amanda. I just figured that it would be nice if one of the GG would become a kind of soulmate, and I see that as a true possibility with Brandi and Monica. ( wait.. That name-combi rings a bell somewhere…. Hmm..)
@Esch
Heheh.. The limitations of linear posting. :p
WAITTAMINUTE, HOLD IT!
“What did you DO Ray!?”
Yeah, I’m thinking a fifty foot guy made of marshmallow would be a welcome distraction right about now. You’d need a lot of hot chocolate though.
*drool*
shops are already closed overhere, no 7/11.. And you just had to mention marshmallows… Grrr i hate You right now…. 😀
I swear these changes in direction are going to give me whiplash…
I think Monica needs to find Fonzie and have him whack Brandi upside the head.
She just needs to call upon Doubt, who is now authorized to carry out a nose-flick…
😀 😀
Of course, it might have to be a sort of plutonium-powered nose flick. . . .
Now THAT wasn’t suppose to happen.
……Awww, NOT AGAIN?
you have to do /b to end it.
Yeah, it’s almost as if fixing Jin broke Brandi, not that it particularly makes sense.
“As son as things calm down some, I ‘m going to have a breakdown.
“I worked for it, I deserve it. And nobody is going to take it away from me.”
“This isn’t panicking, it’s just culture shock. Once that waers off, then I’ll start panicking!”
A big “Yup!!” to both of those.
Graeme Garden: But we mustn’t tell Tim.
Bill Oddy: Right.
Graeme: Because you know what he’d do.
Bill: Right – he’d just panic.
Graeme: And that we do not need.
Bill: Right – we can do that ourselves!
(Both begin running frantically around the room, waving their arms and babbling incoherentlt…)
Hmm.. Could it be that the CM wasn’t -maybe by accident- also connected to Brandi somehow?
Think of it. You mentioned feeling a strange character/attitude inconsistent, change in Brandi’s character… Yet, only after the crushing of the CM, Brandi loses it.
Coinkidink? Maybe…
If she goes on like this, she might lose it completely… and then we are in a world of hurt.
If she loses it completely there won’t be a world to BE hurt. Or Sun. Or solar system.
I’m guessing you could probably write off everything in a sphere for several light years.
Anomalous Type II supernova?
Really big gamma-ray burster?
Another Hanny’s Voorwerp?
Unless Bud poits in and forcibly constrains her, or Monica has just enough time and quick-thinking to cry the Lanthian variation of “STOP” thereby shutting Brandy down for the moment.
I doubt any galaxy-shattering is going to occur.. The scary smile is gone. She is just crying helplessly… look at her posture.. i may be an Aspie, but Brandi’s slumped posture indicates a sudden deflation of all energy…orrr I am completely wro….. …peep… …peep… …peep…
