I interpreted Monica’s rather uncertain “H,Hello Library?” and other comments at the time to mean that even after she was inside the “Annex” all she saw was an abandoned building, until the Library responded. I’m thinking that this Annex proper is somewhere between realities – not actually the main Library, but not really on Earth (or MSP) either.
the way i see it, is that when Monica walked in and said “and NOT a scary abandoned building” was because from the outside before she walked in it “was” an abandoned building and she could see that, but after she went thru the door/gate she came into the “empty” annex floor, that after she told the annex systems what she was after, it then filled up with bookshelves ala’ Matrix. That’s why she was hesitant at first, she was expecting the annex to look similar to the main library, already filled with a bunch of book shelves like a IRL library would be, not just a nicely finished but EMPTY room.
as for Euryale, i personally would agree that she walked in via the same street entrance that M did, however, it could also be said that “The Annex” is just a shared-room construct that can be accessed from anywhere if there is a proper door/gate alignment. I’m thinking that the effect would be VERY similar the how the hotel key artifact worked in the sci-fi mini-series “The Lost Room” in that no matter what a door originally opens into, it you unlock the door with this special key it always takes you to the exact same place… the “lost room”… cool show, too!.

If you look over this strip and yesterday’s you’ll see that Euryale’s hair shifts quickly between snakes and normal(ish) hair. (She’s got a lot of body in that. Hairspray? Bored snakes?) It seems to change with her mood, which makes sense as the petrification gaze makes a hell of a defense mechanism as long as you can turn it off.
Legend says nothing of an easy reversal, but we’re already much closer to original Gorgon lore than to the early golem stories.
Kudos to Craig and zacharaiaha they are pillars of the community and awarded this medal declaring them chock full of schist puns. I hope they don’t take this award for granite, because it is founded by an organization grounded firmly on the bedrock principle of giving people what they so justly deserve. Strike up the music

Can’t remember who, but someone around this forum has done some awesome colorizations of Paul’s work which incorporated beautiful eyes like that. Euryale’s gorgeous peepers made me think of those, and yes they work so very well here… *swoon*

I think Katherine is the only Normal Human Female in the cast now, what with M being a Glyoh Reader and Amanda being a Cat Owned… 😉

To me it looks like the process of stoning somebody is a reflexive defense, not usually under conscious control. especially with her saying that M startled her. i’m sure that she probably COULD do it on a conscious basis, but…
as for her being immune? well, i guess if she gets surprised again by Monica we’ll find out, but i don’t think she’s immune, it’s just that we’ve never heard legends, or stories, of anyone that’s been stoned ever being UN-stoned… so therefore, we don’t “know” if that person would or wouldn’t be able to get RE-stoned again.. ya’ know what i mean?!
Awh… I really would prefer that her hair stays like in the second panel, all those cute little snakies still able to poke out and look around, just without auto-stoning people.
Well, as Dave mentioned in the comment strong above this one, she seems to be able to turn off the Gorgon powers. Maybe Paul will only draw snakey hair when she’s using the stoning ability. After all, she had this same pretty up-sweep of hair on yesterday’s page before Monica startled her.
You’re right though…it would be a pain in the behind to draw each little snake every time she appears…
Oh. I LIKE her! And her eyes are NOT creepy! They make her look earnest and (dare I use this word considering her lack of apparell?) perky. And even tho’ I’m not a snake lover, hers are cute! Besides, the IRL legends are varied. I have heard all the Gecko-Roman legends in several different ways. Seems to depend on the translation of that day.
They’re retelling these stories over hundreds of years. It’s like expecting the DreamWorks people to stick faithfully to the 17th Century text of Puss-In-Boots.
After reading Paul’s work here I started to look at the myths I was reading and wondering, Is the man eating monster that he just killed really just a pacifistic vegetarian that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the story needed more excitment so the story teller LIED HIS ASS OFF. Sorry lost my head for a moment. ;-p
Yesterday i had somehow convinsed myself that Euryale would have a Kate Blanchett “lord of the rings Galadriel deep inner voice” with a hint of Indiana Jones Villain twist “We meeat at last, Muonicee! Speak fast mourtal or i keeel yuu!”.
But today i see i was totally wrong and Euryale “sounds” a lot more Joan Cusack as in Toy Story 2’s Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl “Yeeehaaaaww!”
There’s just one (semi-real-world) aspect to her eyes which really will make them unsettling.
Unless I’m badly mistaken, Paul has drawn her eyes (last frame at least) digitally, during the later stage of the strip production process. They aren’t part of the ink-and-marker drawing.
Whoever buys the original artwork for this strip, will be getting a Little Orphan Euryale, with blank white eyes.
You might be right about the eyes, but I’m betting Paul drew them by hand. I’ve seen lots of realistic looking penciled eyes and they look an awful lot like Euryale’s. The only problem I can imagine is in inking them. I’m hoping against ‘Little Orphan Annie’ eyes.
It looks as if we were each half-correct. The artwork is up on eBay, and she does not have blank white eyes. Nor does she have the fully-shaded and detailed eyes shown in the final strip. It looks as if Paul did her eyes through a combination of drawing/inking, and digital shading.
Great final effect. Makes me a bit wistful… I wish I had at least some talent at drawing or other art.
Hows aboot “Airy” has a Minnesota/Sarah Palin sound in her voice. And as stated earlier’the snakes’ appear when she is Startled,scared….OR – If someone Really, REALLY “Pisses her OFF!” Oh Boy, watch out Shelly.

So i follow u on Paul’s links and i see a “Tiger” amp – the tin it’s built in, that is.
Way back in 1971, Popular Electronics published a construction for a mono amp called the “Plastic Tiger” (one of a series of kit amps called “{something} Tiger”; this one had epoxy power transistors).
It had a neat illustration; ten year later, when i needed a column-head logo (and a title) for a fanzine column i was writing, i bethought me of that article, and i hunted up a copy at the library (not the library), and the column (and subsequently, my domain) was born under the name “An Elecktronick Tyger”, with the appropriate header logo.
If I recall correctly, we were up to the “Pun Dumptruck” level, the day Jin banged her shins, and there was a proposal on the table to switch up to a dis-used grain silo.
I’d say it would be wise to turn away should one have to wake her. Also never prank her with an ice cube down her blouse (when she’s wearing one). On her back, OTOH, while she’s looking at someone else might be entertaining now that we know it’s reversible.
I wonder whether felony-level offenses committed in the Library are prosecutable back out in Minneapolis?
If so, Euryale has a problem, as she’s committed two. First, she turned Monica into a rock with her curse, and then she jumped on her and snogged without having received willing consent.
Definitely a case of “basalt and at-her-y”.

There are some good attempts at clever wordplay in these comments, but despite nearly a dozen of them coming close to being worthy of acclaim, no pun in ten did.
So … tomorrow we find out:
A) Euryale was looking for information on Vimana cells as well and has the exact book Monica needs already (hey, if Bud can find the artifact by chance on a sub, anything’s possible).
B) Euryale knows all about them and/or where to locate some.
C) Euryale lives nearby and make a good living selling amazingly lifelike and intricate “carvings” of small animals.
D) Monica wants to know why Euryale is naked and she points to the nearby tanning bed explaining how she hates tan lines.
E) Silenus strolls by and does them both. We find he’s immune to stoning.
I’ve heard of metamorphic rock but thats new to me! Well Monica, that’s what happens when you take your first impression for granite (swipes credit card through reader on pun jar) And it looks like the Medusa’s are wild in this game (Federal armored truck pulls up along side of pun jar)

I think Katherine is the only Normal Human Female in the cast now, what with M being a Glyoh Reader and Amanda being a Cat Owned… 😉

To me it looks like the process of stoning somebody is a reflexive defense, not usually under conscious control. especially with her saying that M startled her. i’m sure that she probably COULD do it on a conscious basis, but…
as for her being immune? well, i guess if she gets surprised again by Monica we’ll find out, but i don’t think she’s immune, it’s just that we’ve never heard legends, or stories, of anyone that’s been stoned ever being UN-stoned… so therefore, we don’t “know” if that person would or wouldn’t be able to get RE-stoned again.. ya’ know what i mean?!

Awh… I really would prefer that her hair stays like in the second panel, all those cute little snakies still able to poke out and look around, just without auto-stoning people.
Problem is that all the snakes, no doubt, takes a lot longer to draw, so I don’t expect to see them too often in the future.
Well, as Dave mentioned in the comment strong above this one, she seems to be able to turn off the Gorgon powers. Maybe Paul will only draw snakey hair when she’s using the stoning ability. After all, she had this same pretty up-sweep of hair on yesterday’s page before Monica startled her.
You’re right though…it would be a pain in the behind to draw each little snake every time she appears…
Oh. I LIKE her! And her eyes are NOT creepy! They make her look earnest and (dare I use this word considering her lack of apparell?) perky. And even tho’ I’m not a snake lover, hers are cute! They have the kind of expression in their eyes that my cats get when something they’ve done hasn’t QUITE worked out the way they planned. “Oops….oh well….”

Besides, the IRL legends are varied. I have heard all the Gecko-Roman legends in several different ways. Seems to depend on the translation of that day.
They’re retelling these stories over hundreds of years. It’s like expecting the DreamWorks people to stick faithfully to the 17th Century text of Puss-In-Boots.
….Not to mention all of the fairy tales that Disney has altered to make the stories simpler, less dark, and with happy endings…

I always figured that holds true will most of all Myths. They mostly read like pissing contests after all.
After reading Paul’s work here I started to look at the myths I was reading and wondering, Is the man eating monster that he just killed really just a pacifistic vegetarian that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the story needed more excitment so the story teller LIED HIS ASS OFF. Sorry lost my head for a moment. ;-p
Paul isn’t the only one who does that to myths. Tom Siddell did the same here.
Medusa may have turned people to stone, but Euryale clearly has something different…notice the splashes around M, and that her hair now looks wet…
I’ve seen references to the gorgons associated to the sea. But being no great scholar of Greek myth I couldn’t give a real reference to that.

Yesterday i had somehow convinsed myself that Euryale would have a Kate Blanchett “lord of the rings Galadriel deep inner voice” with a hint of Indiana Jones Villain twist “We meeat at last, Muonicee! Speak fast mourtal or i keeel yuu!”.
But today i see i was totally wrong and Euryale “sounds” a lot more Joan Cusack as in Toy Story 2’s Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl “Yeeehaaaaww!”
There’s just one (semi-real-world) aspect to her eyes which really will make them unsettling.
Unless I’m badly mistaken, Paul has drawn her eyes (last frame at least) digitally, during the later stage of the strip production process. They aren’t part of the ink-and-marker drawing.
Whoever buys the original artwork for this strip, will be getting a Little Orphan Euryale, with blank white eyes.
Now, to me, that is creepy.
You might be right about the eyes, but I’m betting Paul drew them by hand. I’ve seen lots of realistic looking penciled eyes and they look an awful lot like Euryale’s. The only problem I can imagine is in inking them. I’m hoping against ‘Little Orphan Annie’ eyes.
It looks as if we were each half-correct. The artwork is up on eBay, and she does not have blank white eyes. Nor does she have the fully-shaded and detailed eyes shown in the final strip. It looks as if Paul did her eyes through a combination of drawing/inking, and digital shading.
Great final effect. Makes me a bit wistful… I wish I had at least some talent at drawing or other art.
after reading this again I have to say that I totally hear Euryale’s voice as the Harley Quin from the Batman cartoons.

You could get lost in Euryale’s eyes. If eyes are windows to the soul, she has a wonderful one.

So i follow u on Paul’s links and i see a “Tiger” amp – the tin it’s built in, that is.
Way back in 1971, Popular Electronics published a construction for a mono amp called the “Plastic Tiger” (one of a series of kit amps called “{something} Tiger”; this one had epoxy power transistors).
It had a neat illustration; ten year later, when i needed a column-head logo (and a title) for a fanzine column i was writing, i bethought me of that article, and i hunted up a copy at the library (not the library), and the column (and subsequently, my domain) was born under the name “An Elecktronick Tyger”, with the appropriate header logo.

If so, Euryale has a problem, as she’s committed two. First, she turned Monica into a rock with her curse, and then she jumped on her and snogged without having received willing consent.

There are some good attempts at clever wordplay in these comments, but despite nearly a dozen of them coming close to being worthy of acclaim, no pun in ten did.
So … tomorrow we find out:
A) Euryale was looking for information on Vimana cells as well and has the exact book Monica needs already (hey, if Bud can find the artifact by chance on a sub, anything’s possible).
B) Euryale knows all about them and/or where to locate some.
C) Euryale lives nearby and make a good living selling amazingly lifelike and intricate “carvings” of small animals.
D) Monica wants to know why Euryale is naked and she points to the nearby tanning bed explaining how she hates tan lines.
E) Silenus strolls by and does them both. We find he’s immune to stoning.
If the small animals are squirrels then she and Katherine will get along just fine.
