I imagine the pages wouldn’t stain all that much…books are just very prone to absorbing moisture, it’s why prolonged handling of paper makes you want to use hand cream or run them in water.
You can actually buy a special press for pressing plant samples. Another way is to put the sample between paper towels, the paper towels between boards, and set concrete blocks on top of it.

That’s a sweet sentiment, but if I use a book to press a leaf, it’s not a book I like very much.

Pressing leaves usually stains the pages, but autumn leaves are different becayse they’re already dry and have no moisture to stain the pages with.
You can use waxed paper to protect the book pages from earlier leaves and flowers too!
