All we have here is printed words with which to make our opinions known. Therefore, it’s important to use the RIGHT printed words to avoid confusion.
That you can reason out that the poster should have said “they’re” as opposed to “there” does not make using “there” any less wrong. Maybe if people had it explained to them more often, they’d stop making that elementary mistake.
BTW, a “grammer nazi” would be chastising the person for using the wrong word and making nasty comments about their upbringing. Not just correcting the word.
That’s it? That’s what they took from the encounter?
One thing I’ve never seen portrayed in this series is one of those all night talk sessions I’ve heard people have to really get to know each other. All they ever seem to do when they get together is get drunk and dance. Well, that and save the world, but still. Otherwise they’re all off doing their own things. They all seem to have only a very superficial relationship with each other.
I’m not saying we need to see the conversations and read some great amount of dialog, just get the gist of the fact they have gab fests from time to time. Something to show they interact on closer terms than just the bar scene.
You do kind of have a point. I think that when the GGs lived with Monica there were lots of “girly nights” that could have involved interesting conversations, but they were still a little flighty and unaware at the time so it hardly counts.
That said, Tina has some pretty in depth conversations with Monica and the gang over her coffee making. At this stage, perhaps she recognizes that there’s more than mere acquantance-ship going on, but they haven’t necessarily moved to “close friends” which would involve much more in depth conversation outside the coffee shop.
Well, Shelly and Monica had a pretty long conversation after they met Nudge and Amanda spent a whole day with Monica at work after visiting her the evening before. Up to now, Tina said that she didn’t have any friends. We’ll have to see if Monica and Shelly reciprocate and behave differently with Tina than they have in the past.
I also think that Tina said “friends” because it’s her job to be their friend. In other words, she’s going to be loyal and helpful, but not necessarily so close.
Ooh, tell, tell. (Why am I even asking this?) Wapsi Square got me to watch Pretty in Pink and I agree with the GGs that Ducky was the better choice. But then, I also have a change I’d have made to The Breakfast Club…
Remember near the end Molly Ringwald takes Ally Sheedy away for a makeover? It’s a nice feminine bonding scene – but only then does Anthony Michael Hall actually notice Ally is a cute girl. Frankly, it drew a smart character as shallow; I wish he’d appreciated her for how she was. It’s a dissatisfying moment in an otherwise excellent movie.
I haven’t seen it, but, apparently, the originally-planned ending was to have the girl wind up with the other guy than she did.
In Hughes’ original script, Andie and Duckie end up together, but due to pressure, Hughes had to change the ending so that Andie and Blane ended up together. – Pretty in Pink: Encyclopedia
(I’m sure someone can find the strip with the GGs watching and informing Monica that this time they hope Andie and Ducky wind up together…)
In the webcomic Wapsi Square, a character shouts at the screen “Andie you idiot! Duckie was the right choice! He was right in front of you the whole time!”
Shoot Just realised how much that says about Jin’s personality. Life must be like a movie to her. You keep telling yourself that if you watch it enough it has to turn out right, but it just goes around and the same things happen over and over again with the same consequences.
Artemisia, consider this: Jin’s life HAS started over some 56 times. And each time things have gone very much the same way, and yet this time she FINALLY got a different ending.
Shelly seems to just be glazing over the whole event and Monica’s eyes seem to say so. So while the page could have a lot of dialog between them vocally it doesn’t need it. ^-^
*puts on her captain obvious cape and runs away*
I was a little worried that we would discover that Tina had read what Shelly and Monica were thinking about each other from their auras. In other words, Shelly hated Monica’s haircut and Monica was worried about Shelly’s relationship, but both had hidden it so as to not hurt the other’s feelings. I’m not seeing anything to support that, though. I still think Tina was reading what they pushed out of their own minds.
I dunno, the “Shelly dislikes Mon’s haircut/Mon is unsure about Shelly’s relationship” theory makes sense to me, despite the lack of direct evidence thereof.
Seems like it, but what there is must be really small. Especially the lower intestines. The food must go practically straight through, again explaining why she doesn’t gain weight. She must take frequent bathroom breaks, however. Though we have recently seen that her stomach can expand quite a bit to hold it for a while at least.
Yes, yes, I know, it’s a cartoon and her form, as drawn, is a charicature. Just having a bit of fun with the body as shown.
It’s probably a good thing that Tina sells coffee and not used cars. Can you imagine?
“Hello. My name is Tina. You look like you might be interested in this car. YOU WOULD BE A FOOL TO MISS OUT ON SUCH A GREAT DEAL! … Oh, excuse me! The thing is, I feel obligated to be honest to my customers and that wasn’t really me talking, anyway. You see, I can read auras. That was really your aura talking, not me. Hmm. It seems to me that you are looking for a car and are subconsciously worried about missing out on a good deal. Well, that’s certainly understandable. Fortunately, I have something you might like even better over here…”
Oh yeah, she’d make a mint in sales, no matter the product. That is, if she didn’t disclose the aura ability and could control her initial reaction better..
If two really good aura readers met, I think there would be one of three outcomes:
1) they look at one another for a few moments, then simply turn and go their separate ways, finding conversation useless since they already know everything about each other.
2) They look at one another a few moments, then both become wide-eyed and launch into each other, fists and feet, tooth and claw.
3) They look at one another a few moments and their heads explode.
Your #1 reminds me of the story (i’ve heard it told of Miyamoto Musashi) of two great swordsmen who met for the first time, face to face, in the middle of a narrow footbridge over a wide and deep stream.
They stood there without moving perceptibly for over an hour, then silently turned, went back to shore, and each sought out other bridges in opposite directions.
Of course it’s pointless. It’s a friggin comic, and this is a comic forum! Only the location is real. What sort of a “point” did you expect? This aint rocket surgery. It’s just a place to share random (and probably pointless) thoughts about events and people that don’t actually exist. Meaningless, but fun.
Ahh, B.F.F. (Best Friends Forever) and Monica does look cute with all that hair gone. she reminds me of that short-haired secratary girl that pistol-packin’ police woman was dating back early in the strip (oh, whatzher name…)
Someone said recently that the message of Wapsi is that “a woman is not defined by her bust size” Interesting fact but the current round of America’s Next Top Model has all the quirky girls. A girl who is shunned as a model for being too tall and skinny which she doesn’t work at (high metabolism: Georgette look) and one had a weird reaction from the judges because she has large breasts and a skinny waist… interesting but not necessarily relevant to this page… but interesting
While I can see a “shorter” haircut for Monica she has never looked more like a guy than she does now… And I never dreamt that was even possible… Hopefully the hair grows back… I miss how it gave Monica more of a swooping action and a sense of movement (no matter what the style was)
And Shelley… Well let’s just say I miss the old Shelley that played bass in Fermented Banana….
I’m not saying women can’t look strong but it’s really getting hard to see them as females…
My friend Joia and I used to hold hands all the time when we were walking together; didn’t mean anything but that we were friends. When you’re a taller gal like me walking with a shorter gal, it also keeps you in pace with each other. It also comes in handy during icy winters when your friend’s grip on your hand may be the only thing keeping you standing! …or you might both end up on your assets on the ice laughing yourselves silly. 🙂
I love the fact that after the previous moments, the part they come away with is that Tina says they are friends. 🙂 That positive energy is the thing to hang on to!
Ahhhh. There just so cute!!!
“They’re”
There, there…
I also roll on the floor and chew rugs. Free matinee Saturdays. Bring the kids!
Now now… (Heh heh)
WOW, grammar nazis…. seriously! LOL CHILL!

Well, now’s the moment to go : ‘Aaaw, shucks!’ girls!
Very cute… but is Monica trying to say something there?
Like “Ow ow ow please quit sqeezing my hand so hard!”
Wonderful full-page shot , and the girls looking at the positive side of the encounter .
There. Right there. Monica’s rockin’ the new do.
I gotta agree. That’s the best display for her hair I’ve seen since she got it cut.
Rockin? Yes… Still think it needs to be a bit longer though. If it weren’t for her chest, she’d look like a guy with that cut. *pouts*
Not much.
Too bad ther wasn’t a shot of the black catsuit. 😉
Slick!
Oh, I don’t know. There is her makeup, small waist with large hips, tight pants with no “package” buldge, no facial shadow, no Adam’s apple.
Come to think of it I don’t have a visible Adam’s apple either, though, so that may not mean much.
Agreed. She looks downright sexy in this image. 😀
I find that most pixie cuts look better after they have grown out for a couple of weeks, and get a bit feather-y.
I think I’m seeing them in slow motion and hearing a heavy base ballad music in the background.
There’s an old Hollywood joke that ends “Wait! … My agent came all the way up here?”
I think Shelly is sort of tuning out everything but “Tina’s our friend!”…
Not the first time she’s done that. Consider how she dealt with her “little girl”.
Crisis averted.
Oh gosh golly willikers. Are they going to play in the sandbox now? XD
Many people seeing them hand in hand like that will think they’re off to play in any event.
Friends are good to have.
Friends are the best!
That’s it? That’s what they took from the encounter?

Go read “Something Positive” if you want a text-heavy comic full of conversation.
I’m not saying we need to see the conversations and read some great amount of dialog, just get the gist of the fact they have gab fests from time to time. Something to show they interact on closer terms than just the bar scene.

I promise I know how to spell acquaintance. I blame my lack of caffeine.

Well, the word “friend” got very much devalued in our society – see facebook “friends”.
But I agree – they might be close, but the comic rarely shows it.
The occasional movie night with Monica and Amanda might qualify. Lots of squealing and giggling there.
And the GGs were shown having movie nights in the past, too.
Though they mostly seemed to watch “Pretty in Pink” in hopes it would come out “right” this time.
(Ironically, from what i’ve read, the GGs’ preferred end was, in fact, what was originally planned…)
Ooh, tell, tell. (Why am I even asking this?) Wapsi Square got me to watch Pretty in Pink and I agree with the GGs that Ducky was the better choice. But then, I also have a change I’d have made to The Breakfast Club…
A change to The Breakfast Club? Like what?

excellent work on this page, Paul
still getting used to Monica’s new look but it’s well constructed and suits the character so well
as always, love Shelly’s look but would be interested in seeing her with long hair again -just out of personal preference 😉
thanks as always, mate, for all the excellent work 🙂
Quite true, Since I ragged on Paul’s drawing the other day, it’s only fair I echo your sentiments on this page. Excellent work!
Well, if that isn’t a car-crash-causing sight right there. 🙂
Wouldn’t be the first time.

Yes, I think it was their own insecurities coming out in their auras. But they look all better now…
I dunno, the “Shelly dislikes Mon’s haircut/Mon is unsure about Shelly’s relationship” theory makes sense to me, despite the lack of direct evidence thereof.
hmmm, have a look at the strips from 5 or 6 years ago for all the chatty stuff…. 🙂
eschmenk is right… if you can read body language well, you dont need the aura to know… this comic is limited in what can be shown, unlike RL… :p
Yes, but it’s still superficial chatty stuff.
Opps, that should have gone with the post just above this one.
Damn, they both look good…
So that’s how Monica can scarf down
tubs of ice cream without consequences.
Judging from this illustration, she has no internal organs!
Seems like it, but what there is must be really small. Especially the lower intestines. The food must go practically straight through, again explaining why she doesn’t gain weight. Sure she gains weight! It’s just all in the chest! (Which explains her complaints about “shrinking bras”)
Like the saying goes:
A True Friend is someone who knows everything about you
And likes you anyway.
I thought that was “… and will help you dispose of the bodies.”
No, that’s your mob-connected friend.
It actually goes: “a friend will help you move. A real friend will help you move a body.”
I forget where i saw it – hope it wasn’t here – but Oscar Wilde is supposed to have said that a true friend stabs you in the front…
Well, whether or not you originally saw it here, you’ll have to decide; however, eschmenk posted that quote in the comments on yesterday’s comic. 🙂
You know, I’ll bet even Oscar Wilde got it from somewhere else as well. Et tu Brute?
ooops
I love Monica’s news look.

Wow. How…pointless. Farewell, forum dwellers! Farewell Mr. Taylor! I’m off to the Fourth Dimension!

HAPPY NINTH ANNIVERSARY, WAPSI SQUARE!

Is This girl related to Monica?
And is this girl related to Kataharine?
Want this as a poster. Want want want. ^.^
Sorta like this?
And there’s the lesbian shot I was fearing….

Just my .02
Women friends in Latin cultures hold hands. They just do, no extra weight or innuendo. M and Shelly are close friends.

i loooove the way monica looks here. shelley’s arms always bug me a bit but overall i love the style, especially their legs.
also – i definitely hold hands with female friends sometimes. it’s fun. and much safer on ice, i agree!
