        Perhaps.

I’d say Mr. Taylor’s comic art would really work well, if a good animation studio could successfully emulate his style, as a animated series. Just sayin’.

I think Paul always had PG-13 in mind. The language alone tips that scale.

And you can show nipples in a G-rated movie, but the scene cannot be sexualized in any way. So it’s pretty rare given our culture.

I don’t believe we have achieved nippleatude quite yet. That appears to be just the areola. Or maybe dirt rings from touching the ground. She didn’t look very kempt yesterday, after all. It may yet be a few days before bathtime. Unless she uses her tongue like other cats.

Now you’ve gone and done it! You’ve sexualized it by mentioning tongue in a nipple-themed discussion …or perhaps it’s just my dirty mind making the connection. 🙂

Been there less than a cycle ago. A previous (ex)-Calendar cycle? Hrm. Interesting, I’ll have to give that some thought.

      • SoWhyMe
        May 2, 2011, 1:33 am | #

Sure. Even though the CM is destroyed, we are still in the it’s uisual cycle time. At least this indicates Shelly has done this before. Now would be a good time to ask this sphinx what happened when they met in other cycles.

      May 2, 2011, 1:20 am | # | Reply

*scratches head* If so..why is the sphinx so hostile? It must know there is a point to Shelly appearing again????

I wonder, since Phix is free of the library, and pretty omni-aware, could she appear here too to protect Shelly?..That would be some cat-fight o_o

      May 2, 2011, 4:35 am | # | Reply

I’m wondering why it’s all backwards. If it’s been “less than a cycle” and the Sphinx is referring to the calendar machine cycles, then that means that this current adventure the girls are on occurred before the last attempt / failure to fix the calendar machine.

That then raises the next question of have the girls tried to fix Jin before and failed at that too?

      • WittLash
        May 2, 2011, 10:34 am | #

I’m not entirely sure that it’s ever been established that each of the cycles takes the same amount of time. It could be that this time they stopped the machine before it’s appointed reset time. It could also be that this sphinx has no real sense of time being there all alone.

      • WittLash
        May 2, 2011, 10:36 am | #

OOORRR crazy thought here, but maybe somehow the device jumped her back to one of the previous cycles somehow. We haven’t seen an AU event as of yet but we know that they existed of a sort.

If it weren’t for the difference in size, I’d be thinking that Shelly isn’t clasping both hands in front of her, instead she’s still got the artifact in her right hand and is holding in place – and away from her throat – the Sphinx’s extending right paw with her left hand.

Danzier: If you would like to get some practice with HTML without blowing up the forum, let me offer you a tip.

Boardhost offers free hosting of simple message boards. You can create one in minutes.

The message boards use much the same flavor of HTML that the Wapsi Square forum uses.

They also offer something I really, really wish this site offered: a preview function. You can write a piece of code, preview it, and test to see if the links and embeds work as you think they will. If they don’t, you can modify the HTML until it does work.

And then you can copy the finished work, and paste it here.

Keeps mistakes from happening so often. Unless I am tired or in a hurry, I use it to preview some of my posts here.

And if you create the board, you have the admin keys that allow you to erase posts as well, block other posters, edit, modify … look it over.

Shelly doesn’t seem too perturbed by the bloodthirsty statement of the sphinx… I wonder, how badly could someone that has the ability to crunch a stainless steel coffeepot, hurt a sphinx.

If my hunch is right, the sphinx is about to chew off more than she can swallow.

After all, I do believe that Shelly has a guardian-role in this whole affair.

Loove the “üh-oh IamGonnaImprviseLikeMad” look of Shelly 🙂

      May 2, 2011, 1:21 am | # | Reply

That’s a good point. Perhaps Shelly could lay one of those “bend the finger back” kind of moves on the lion lady, rendering her momentairly helpless from the pain as she puts a walloping roundhouse to her jaw.

      • Sitnalta
        May 2, 2011, 3:10 am | #

Pretty sure that sphinx could fold Shelly in half like a piece of paper. They eat demons, after all.

      • SoWhyMe
        May 2, 2011, 3:45 am | #

Perhaps. Still, there is nothing in the story line that indicates demons are physically super strong. They do their thing by cunning and persuasion, not brute force like the sphinxes. I think the fact sphinxes can kill demons has more to do with the sphinx’s metaphysical abilities than anything else.

      • W.
        May 2, 2011, 7:55 pm | #

Nah.. I guess the question Shelly just posed, will be the trigger for some interesting tales from the sphinx, after that, Shelly will know why she’s there ,and be on her merry way.

It’ possible, based on her experience with Phix, that Shelly believes as long as you keep asking a Sphinx questions, they’ll prefer answering to ripping you apart…

Could be, but I don’t think so. Even if they were not on a quest to fix Jin this meeting would still have happened about this same time in previous cycles thanks to the sub incident.

      • Francisco

I don’t think so. They didn’t need to fix Jin in previous cycles as the Calendar machine kept her sane(ish):

      • Eee
        May 2, 2011, 9:35 am | #

But it was only because the CM was dealt with that the girls had enough time to relax, visit the sandbar, Bud to meet Stinky, etc, etc. I suspect everything in this ‘quest to fix Jin’ is new, and Shelly and the Sphinx have never faced each other like this before.

I also suspect it was during the dreamquest that the Sphinx saw Shelly before, and has no idea what she’s doing there again. She’s reacting as she would to any intruder.

      • SoWhyMe
        May 2, 2011, 4:01 pm | #

I don’t think so. The fact they went very early this cycle indicates they had already done all they could in preparation for “fixing” the CM. If they had gone inl 2012 this time again, all they could do at this point was wait anyway. There would be no reason Monica would not have come to the realization she could poit somewhere and escape the winter, which was her motivation. In so doing she found the sandbar and the rest is (repeat) history. In prevous cycles she likely did the same thing around this point. A few days or even weeks one way or the other would not have changed things. Stinky would still have found one of the golems on the island, fetch would have ensued, and the artifact would have been discovered, Leading up to Shelly going to tree land.

      • Eee
        May 2, 2011, 6:49 pm | #

But the only reason they’re having to try to fix Jin IS because the CM is gone. As long as it existed and functioned, she was (mostly) sane. Now that it’s gone, NOW they have to find some way to cure her. Which is what’s lead to this whole quest, and why Shelly was willing to see what the artifact they’ve got does…

      • SoWhyMe
        May 2, 2011, 8:03 pm | #

Yes, but the thing is, Bud’s finding the relec had nothing to do with the quest. It was pure chance that the sub Stinky brought up had it on board. Even without any quest, that would have still happened. Bud went inside because of curiosity, nothing more. She didn’t go inside expecting to find any relic. She deduced the thing must have been important and had something to do with the deaths of the crew so she saved it and eventually took it to Monica’s. So, even if there had been no quest, as there would not have been in previous cycles since Jin would have still been holding it together, the sub incident would still have happened. The girls would also have had many months to kill before going and fixing the CM, so Monica would have had time to do the island thing. They would all have been going about their normal lives, including vacations.

      • SoWhyMe
        May 2, 2011, 8:32 pm | #

Also Monica would still have foolishly touched it and Shelly would still have thoughtlessly grabbed it. So everyone would be curious as to why it didn’t affect her and would want her to hold it again to see what happened. All this without trying to fix Jin. Shelly didn’t mind because she thought nothing was going to happen. It wasn’t because she was being brave and trying to help Jin. However, after she gets back from 6 Hags Over WTF, she may have a different opinion of ever touching it again.

      May 2, 2011, 11:22 am | # | Reply

My guess, the time she was entranced by the hammer and the doll, since that would be the only recurring event that happens once per cycle with our without Jin’s interference, and happened this cycle.

      • Jay-Em
        May 2, 2011, 1:19 pm | #

Why not. Since the “vision-bit” of a visionquest is, basically, an Out of Body-Experience, it’s not bound by location. Maybe Shelly’s dad is of Irish ancestry.

In panel two that,”Unless you can prove you have a purpose here.” , sounds a little bit like the riddle-stage that Phix put everyone thru to weed out the less-than-serious library patrons. Wonder what this ones name is! She doesn’t look like a “younger” version of Phix (in case this is a shift in time sort of vision); she makes me actually think of Shelly or Monica a bit.

(I’m sorry if this was brought up in another comment. I haven’t read them all yet)

I think the guardian presents itself as the most threatening/dangerous thing in the observer’s mind. Monica saw a freaky version of Jin. Shelly sees a sphinx, but not Phix because she knows Phix is not a threat to her, but she knows other (less benevolent) sphinxes exist.

It could be that the cycle it is referring to is a standard day, and considers Monica touching it to be accessing it the first time “in less than a cycle”. After all, Mon didn’t touch it for long, an the executioner might not be that good at differentiating humans as it is.

Well, the Sphinx knows about the cycles, and knows that Shelly was here during the most recent cycle…so the destruction of the calendar machine apparently was not a prerequisite for dealing with this artifact.

I have to guess that perhaps Shelly visited this sphinx before the attempt to destroy the calendar machine occurred in the previous cycle?

    • Jabberwonky
      May 2, 2011, 1:37 pm | # | Reply

It all depends on the Sphinx’s definition of a cycle. That’s pretty generic. Could be the cycle of the Calendar Machine hitches, the cycle of the Earth around the sun, the cycle of vibrations of a quartz crystal with electricity run through it.

Most females have a pretty basic definition of cycles.

Do sphinxes have a menstural cycle? And, if so, how long would it be? Earth females have evolved to “cycle” to the rhythm of earth’s moon. Does that mean it is likely other planets would be the same? What about multiple moons? Maybe thats why sphinxes are so vicious, they have multiple moons on the homeworld so that they stay in a constant cycle of one sort or another.

Sphinxes may be supernatural, but they are indeed of the earth, so perhaps since they are so long lived their idea of a cycle must be more akin to the great year of 25,765 years. Then their “monthly” cycle would be ~2147 years.

Geez, Mystic, no wonder they’re known for ripping people to pieces for little to no reason–they’re in need of feminine painkillers for five hundred straight years! 😯

Well. Not Phix, unless Sphinges use Lady Clairol. Most interesting… where is Shelly?

Everybody knows you should at least try “Bah-weep grahna-weep ni-ni-bong” and offer any snacks you might have on your person in situations like this. If that don’t work, then you run.

Alan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold: “Oh-wah… Tagoo… Siam!” And he, uh, dissappears in a clap of thunder and a puff of smoke…

…also known as “debris from the exploding dynamite.”
