If you’ve ever been in M’s position (and I have) then long ass hair constantly gets in the way – swimming is impossible without 2 cards’ worth of bobbypins and/or a super economy sized swimcap – and can give you neck pain if it’s thick and wiry like hers apparently was. Her hair was nearly as long as she was tall – try pinning nearly 5 feet length of thick rope to your own head some time and see if you’d want that hanging off the back of your head all day. I can guarantee it’d be a ‘hell no’ response.
Waist or butt is still excessive if the hair is thick enough and apparently wiry enough. Monica’s 4’11”, so hair down to her butt would probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2’5″. That’s still a ton of hair.
I like Alex-chan’s idea. All of the men out there who think women should have waist or butt-length hair should wear rope wigs that long for a day or more and see how their necks enjoy the added weight.
Personally, I don’t need the wig. I am currently in the process of growing it naturally for the third time to that length, at which time it will be donated if my depression phases don’t wreck it again like last time. LoL got it the first time, but the last time my GF’s mother died when it was almost the right length, and I didn’t take care of it for the next 6 months. I had splits over half way up…worthless.
Beauty may require sacrifice, but I think that men who expect certain aspects of “beauty” from the women they are around or with or interested in or whatever should have to spend at least a week going through all of the steps invloved as well.
Oh…and they’re not allowed to complain about how long it takes women to get ready either.
Sorry…this happens to be a bit of a sore point for me.
I totally agree with your last post, and please don’t apologize to men with unrealistic expectations. I have also been there, and I have to say that the most hurtful thing a male friend said to me about my new, extremely short cut a few years ago was something along the lines of, “Hey, it looks ok but I think long hair looks better.” It doesn’t really sound that bad, but it stings to hear it. Like, ok, I’ll just go ahead and grow it all back tonight, then, to suit your completely arbitrary notion of femininity?
Not saying a guy’s not allowed to dislike a haircut on someone, but for some reason this seems to be the only situation in which it’s (apparently) socially acceptable for a dude to insult a woman’s choice in appearance with impunity.
Fine, then never, never ask us what we think about it (or if you look fat in it). Because, if you ask, be prepared for an answer you won’t like. Regardless, you will always disappoint some people with any change. That’s human nature. Because it thrills you, don’t think it will anyone else.
I agree though, it takes what it takes to achieve that “natural” look of beauty. The man will just have to be patient and not complain if that’s what he wants. Not that it’s always men. Many women simply like looking nice and would not have it any other way.
Heck, the first time I got right up close to a woman’s face who wore makeup, I was disgusted, bordering on nausea, to see it for what it really was. That stuff only looks good from a distance.
Heh…I’m perfectly willing to accept an honest opinion when I ask for one. Like M here, my sore spot is because I didn’t ask for that honest opinion.
I had my “lack of feminine beauty” rubbed in my face since I didn’t jump through the hoops that particular man wanted his female companions to jump through (i.e. curl my hair into ringlets and wear make up all the time when my hair is naturally straight, and I dislike wearing make up).
Ah, Julie, that sounds like a more hurtful scenario than what I experienced, which was mostly just tacky. I found the exact message, sent to me after I posted a picture of the new ‘do:
“Cute always but I like the long hair but you look cool in the short hair too.”
Relatively innocent but still like… what? Who asked you? If you can’t say anything nice…
And the same guy a year later, on another photo I posted (after I had let my hair start to come back in):
“Lovely. Your hair is growing back too.”
It’s like… both are somehow phrased as compliments but both seem… judgmental. Both comments are made within a context of a man volunteering judgment on a woman’s appearance, completely unasked, and feeling entitled to do so because society says it’s ok.
I don’t know. It’s like, if you don’t like my hair short, good for you. Now please go to hell.
P.S. Monica looks awesome
P.P.S. Is anyone even reading these anymore?
Not to mention the plate of bobby pins hidden under the mess and.. like the stylist said, it’d gotten wiry and was likely somewhat unpleasant. Lots of tangles, which are easy to get, making brushing a pain..
Frankly, I’ve been thinking of following M’s example of late. My nieces like playing with it, though…
Actually I think this will take more to draw. Paul just drew a few lines to give the suggestion of long hair before. Now there is more detail needed to make it look right.
That said, long hair (like most things that requires time and dedication) looks good. Yes, I know longer hair is a pain. I’m a male who used to have hair down his back in high school. And yes, you feel about thirty pounds lighter. And no. Nobody expects it. Actually, it depends on your head and neck shape, but there are women who look good bald (Demi Moore), or with stubble (Natalie Portman) or with long flowing locks (Sinead O’connor, believe it or not)
That said, I originally was going for a ‘what men say to women/what they think’ vibe. To whit, yes, we accept that long hair is a pain. But it usually looks damn good.
Ummmm, boy, this is going to take some getting used to. Makes her look more mature to me – though not in a good way. Mark me down in the “less than thrilled” column. Well, at least nobody will think she’s a boy.
She has some ‘defining’ characteristics that should help keep down any gender confusion! I have a friend that did the same thing, but the stylist was pretty bad. Poor girl was mistaken for a 13 year old boy D: Then she found a better stylist and, WOW, it really worked for her.
Don’t get me wrong — a good short cut rocks with some women – those with finer, more delicate features especially. Actress Janine Turner (Northern Exposure) being a more extreme case in my opinion — totally hot and awesome in the short cut – totally meh with longer hair.
I think Kevin is going to think he’s fallen into a bizarro world when he gets back.
@ Althestane: I agree; short hair is especially easy to screw up. When I saw the words “pixie cut” yesterday, I was not pleased; Goggle-imaging that term turned up a bunch of moppy rat’s nests that I did NOT feel were AT ALL attractive. Short hair on a woman can be either very butch or very feminine, depending on how it’s done–or drawn, for that matter. At least Pablo didn’t make it look sloppy.
She reminds me of Cameron Diaz in the bottom panel. Can’t say specifically why, but something about the hair/look brings her to mind (Something About Mary era)
Forget Ab Fab, though for awesomeness – her work to force the Government to keep the promises previous Governments made to the Gurkhas out ranks almost anything else she’s done, no matter how awesome. (And, yes, Sapphire and Steel, i’m looking at you, too.)
Women are just as bad as men when they talk among themselves. Some even when they talk in mixed company. The days of shocking the genteel sensibilities of women are long past. Assuming they ever existed.
It’s not necessarily a concern for “shocking the genteel sensibilities of women”. It’s good old-fashioned manners. 🙂 At least that’s what my Daddy raised me to believe…and my mother swears and makes dirty jokes with the best of them.
I was going to ask what her boyfriend thinks – but then I remembered he’s apparently vanished. How long’s it been since we’ve seen the two of them together?
Don’t forget that, changing seasons to match posting date notwithstanding, and barring a time jump between arcs, it really hasn’t been that long in Wapsi time. I guess that the 2.5 real-year time machine arc lasted only a couple weeks. Kevin’s assignment could take over six months if travel between countries is necessary.
Besides, not all day-to-day activities warrant situations suitable for humor. While they can be most interesting when you are doing them yourself, to an outside observer it can get redundant, especially if they don’t affect the story line.
Hear hear! Very nicely put, indeed! Douglas Adams did a fun bit of narrative in one of his Hitchhiker books about how recording all the minutiae grinds the plot to a halt (something to do with whether or not Arthur Dent had sex, as I recall).
Well, I was thinking she might want to show him how fun sized she was. If she is feeling that good about how she looks, it would be nice for him if he’s around to take advantage of it.
Ah, the pixie cut! Being a guy, I’ve never had to deal with extremely long hair myself, but now that what hair I had is going stealth, it’s even less of a problem. Long hair can look great (but it’s a pain to care for), and short hair can look great (and it’s a whole lot easier to handle); it’s all in the cut.
Google it? I remember it – when I was a school kid they showed us a film of the story, which mostly confused us. (Now, I have no idea why we saw it; maybe to teach us that styles and social expectations change.)
You and I both read it in school for the same reason: It was part of American Lit class. And it was a lot easier to read than the author’s other major work. Some novel about a rich guy from East Egg, Long Island.
That looks precious on her! 🙂 I’ve always been super jealous of women who could pull off the pixie look. It may be partly in the cut, but it’s also partly in the shape of the face wearing the cut. Monica’s got what it takes to wear that look well.
I think it looks good the way Paul drew it, but I’m not sure how it would look with her coloring. If she had black hair, it would work, but I don’t know about brown hair with fairly dark skin. Highlights would probably help.
I agree on the ‘auburn’ definition of her color. That said, I’d never noticed that hair color affected my perception of whether or not a cut looked good on a person. Usually I just decide whether or not I like the color on the person separate from the cut.
I don’t like it. It went from one extreme to the other and now her neck length looks exaggerated as it’s bare. My preference is at least shoulder length personally.
Thelma and Louise is a very misandric movie from what i have read of it. There are many such movies. I have not seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo either, however I have read a detailed description of the plot, and while it has misogynistic aspects to it, it also has misandric aspects. Still I wonder if things are often labeled as misogynistic when, in fact, it’s just the mistreatment of certain females. John Carpenter,”Vampires” , for example, got the misogynistic label because of the cruel treatment of one female vampire.
Oh wow! I know how you feel M! I donated about 2′ of hair at the end of my senior year, and my first thought was, “Oh my gosh, I could fly home!” Such a great feeling! Mine was more Audrey Hepburn inspired though.
Actually the short ‘do’ helps accentuate M’s other …..”attributes”. Now the rest of the week will be Monica showing off the new cut to all the girls, and you know someone will say “OMG Monica what have you done!?”
Exiern? Oh, my, where to start? I know, with the idea that black text on a dark brown background is a good idea! Redbeard, Exiern is an interesting webcomic in its art and story, but it has site design issues.
Trying to resist… snarky statement… about women being honest…
Seriously, though. In this culture, women are told to tell each other positive things. So if Monica shaved her head, eveyone would gush.
To be fair, in this culture, men are told to tell women what they want to hear. So no honest opinion there.
Jin, on the other hand, might have some interesting commentary…
Yay for all of our mothers raising us to “say something nice or don’t say anything at all.” 🙂 Some of us grew out of that, and the others of us have found ways to let people know our honest opinions without being bluntly mean about it.
As you friendly neighborhood Kiowa/Comanche, and as someone who used to have long hair (unbraided, it was down to my waist), I can rightfully say there will be a period of adjustment. But, she never had to get the questions I did as a young boy:
Why do you wear your hair like that? It looks like a girl’s hairdo!
Is it a religon thing?
(barely tugging on the end of a braid) Does this hurt?
Usually the last question was, Do you get a lot of stupid questions about having long hair? They kind of answered that one in their heads as they ask it, and end the conversation right then.
That being said, I like the new look. Any hairdo can be called “Give It A Few Months”, but I wouldn’t mind if she kept it.
Homina homina HOMINA! I love women with pixie haircuts, and Monica is ROCKIN’ THE PIXIE right there! Definitely put her in a Tinkerbelle costume for Halloween!
I may be the minority but I have to disagree… What’s with all the ladies in this strip cutting their hair? While I can see Monica having a shorter hair cut this “pixie” cut is not for me… I’ve never been partial to women with boy haircuts in the first place… Shelley’s I could deal with but I fear there will be much cringing in my readership until it grows back…
Sorry Pablo it’s still an amazing comic and I’ll still read but Monica is on the outs with me for now…
From someone’s who’s been in M’s position, I can vouch that when you have to move your hair out of the way to use the restroom, it’s time to cut it! Or when sitting in a chair and you lean forward and get jerked back because your hair is trapped between your body & the back of the chair… *sigh*
I didn’t chop mine to complete pixie, but I chopped mine to chin-length. It look time to get used to it, and I’m growing it back out again (it’s about mid-back right now) , but it was a nice & needed change.
I dunno. If M’s hair is straight and thick (like mine) it may grow quite fast. I usually stop getting haircuts in early October, and in mid-March when I start getting haircuts again, I cut off about 18 inches to go back to summer length.
My girlfriend is jealous. She says my scalp is wasted on a guy. I say she’s welcome to pay for the weekly haircut six months a year if she wants a scalp like mine.
I haven’t let it grow to butt length since I graduated college. My sister had knee-length hair for a while but she cut it; says it was too much trouble to keep.
I think Monica looks great with short hair. I’m eye-rolling a bit at the “boy hair” comments, though; as if short hair is the domain of guys only. Or the idea that women must have long hair. It’s not as if men’s hair stops growing at 1″ naturally.
Wow, that is a new look. Go Monica!
How is it possible that she is now even cuter?
All your fans thought you were already ‘fun size’, Monica.
Are you sure you’re not confusing “fun size” with “large economy size”…?
There’s a difference? 😉
The economy is never fun.
(yes I understood what you meant)
Whew, crisis averted. That turned out a lot cuter that I expected. Plus Locks of Love needs all the hairy help they can get.
All your hair are belong to us.
Green mini dress and wings and … Tinkerbell!
Actually, the lower part of that dress is sorta Tinkerbell-ish.
Right length, but it oughtta be scalloped for that.
Pablo, you simply MUST make her Tink at Halloween!!!! Complete with pouty lower lip! Toooo cute!
Not enough hair left; Tink has a short ponytail.
That’s very cute, but I really dug the long hair 🙁
Answer to girl: Yes, it looks good!
Answer for real: WHY? Why lose the long hair?!?
If you’ve ever been in M’s position (and I have) then long ass hair constantly gets in the way – swimming is impossible without 2 cards’ worth of bobbypins and/or a super economy sized swimcap – and can give you neck pain if it’s thick and wiry like hers apparently was. Since when does Monica swim? D: ?
Right, Monica causes people to swim (for their life).
Also, all of that hair would get hot in the summertime. Also, I suppose sometime people just want to make a change.
For Paul, it’s probably easier to draw.
Actually I think this will take more to draw. Paul just drew a few lines to give the suggestion of long hair before. Now there is more detail needed to make it look right.
Wow. Caused more of a stir then I thought would.
That said, long hair (like most things that requires time and dedication) looks good. Yes, I know longer hair is a pain. I’m a male who used to have hair down his back in high school. Wow! She looks good, and I bet she feels like a whole new person.
Did you mean aside from the gymnastics? Monica is brave for trying something new. Hope Kevin likes it!
I wonder if Paul got sidetracked between “Except for the gymnastics,” and “Aside from the gymnastics.”
I thought that looked familiar. Did some looking up and found Goldie Hawn and Liza Minneli had cuts like that.
Sandy Duncan.
Joanna Lumley!
(Useless factoid: The only person to be in a James Bond film before she was on The Avengers…)
Yay for James Bond factoids! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Don’t forget Ab Fab, SweetieDarling…the trifecta!
Enjoyed Ab fab, hate Bond and Avengers.
I loved Joanna Lumley in The Avengers! AbFab was not as good (IMO) as everyone thought it was. (I guess I just like action adventure better.)
Yes, but you have to concede that neither Honor Blackman nor Diana Rigg ever did anything quite so awesome as Ab Fab later in their careers…
Well, when she’s Dame Joanna, we’ll discuss that.
Forget Ab Fab, though for awesomeness – her work to force the Government to keep the promises previous Governments made to the Gurkhas out ranks almost anything else she’s done, no matter how awesome. (And, yes, Sapphire and Steel, i’m looking at you, too.)
Blech…not a fan of Ab Fab either. I much prefer Dame Diana.
LOVE her hair!
Now I wanna go and cut mine too, it’s too hot for all this darned hair anyways!
It’s just a pain, isn’t it? XD -_- but I couldn’t get away with NOT cutting it as often as I do now…
Ahhhhhhh! She looks sssoooo cuuute!! I WANT TO EAT HER UP!
Hey! There may be women and children here!
I won’t go with the Morticia quote, since she’s not “too young”.
Speaking of children, where is our youngest Wapsi fan, anyways?
Just how young is this fan of whom you speak?
Well, LadyWolf is 18…
That’s an adult.
Okay, she’s a women then.
Ladywolf18 was whom I spoke – and I was pretty sure she was the youngest of our “regular” posters.
Wow….
I didn’t think that was going to work, but… wow. She looks good!
Consider the “poit” to the lake and the “beedle beedle beedle” segment makes me see more Laura Croft antics in her future, yes/no?
I hope not.
Cute !
Shelly and Monica are pixie twins now ^^
Actually shelly might have let hers grown a little but she WAS a pixie twin 😀
actually what ever happened to shelly and officer sexy buns? i am curious now lol
He’s probably just tied up.
Ba-dum-bump.
Nooooooooooooo! *flails*
Oh GOD.
I want her in a plastic bag, to go. Fun size indeed, she’s adorable! More so! XD
I was going to ask what her boyfriend thinks – but then I remembered he’s apparently vanished. How long’s it been since we’ve seen the two of them together?
Now now, he’s not missing. He’s just ‘on assignment.”

I hate the new hair.
Long hair gets in the way during sex.
It’s different, but I like it. ;3
Monica isn’t just fun size, she’s YUM SiZE! Que friggin linda!
Thanks for keeping things fresh, Pablo!
Now Monica’s very cute an’ all. But is she going to able to stand up for more than 5 minutes without falling forward?
Well aint that cute!? 🙂
Fun size is right! She’s absolutely adorable.
What would it take for those polka dots to be
3D mapped rather than 2D pasted?
The decision on Paul’s part that it’s worth the effort to achieve a specific visual effect that’s outside his normal vision for the art?
I’m getting a “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” feel from this strip. (Go ahead, Google it, I DARE you.)
Google it? I remember it – when I was a school kid they showed us a film of the story, which mostly confused us. (Now, I have no idea why we saw it; maybe to teach us that styles and social expectations change.)

Seems to me that Paul’s colour renditions of Monica tend more toward what i’d call “auburn” than brown.
Her hair was pretty red when she was playing a viking, but other times I would just call it brown.
I agree on the ‘auburn’ definition of her color. That said, I’d never noticed that hair color affected my perception of whether or not a cut looked good on a person. Usually I just decide whether or not I like the color on the person separate from the cut.
My wife and daughter both have roundish faces and look absolutely adorable with short hair…
My wife has a long-oval face and looks fabulous in shoulder-length. Once when she got it cut in a bob, we both said… neeehh…
I don’t like it. It went from one extreme to the other and now her neck length looks exaggerated as it’s bare. My preference is at least shoulder length personally.
FUN SIZE!!!! ha ha a i know a girl who says that all the time! XD
Fat girls tend to say that.
You know, now that I know you’re the resident troll, your misogynistic postings are actually kind of cute.
Just because I speak my mind and relate what I have witnessed, in no way makes me a troll. Besides, you say misogynistic as if it’s a bad thing.
As opposed, say, to “misanthropic”?
Have you seen “Thelam and Louise”?
How about “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”?
Those are fairly misanthropic…
Any opinions?
Thelma and Louise is a very misandric movie from what i have read of it. There are many such movies. I have not seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo either, however I have read a detailed description of the plot, and while it has misogynistic aspects to it, it also has misandric aspects. John Carpenter,”Vampires” , for example, got the misogynistic label because of the cruel treatment of one female vampire.
Misogynistic…misandric…misanthropic…
I’d say all three aren’t good things.
Oh wow! I know how you feel M! I donated about 2′ of hair at the end of my senior year, and my first thought was, “Oh my gosh, I could fly home!” Such a great feeling! Mine was more Audrey Hepburn inspired though.
She’s always been fun size.
It’s interesting what mental gymnastics people do to convince themselves that a butt ugly hair do isn’t butt ugly.
Rationalization – it’s what “normal” people use instead of insanity.
No, rationalization is what “normal people” call insanity; they just do not want to admit what it really is.
Butt ugly is in the eyes of the beholder. She may not see it that way. 🙂
Actually the short ‘do’ helps accentuate M’s other …..”attributes”. Now the rest of the week will be Monica showing off the new cut to all the girls, and you know someone will say “OMG Monica what have you done!?”
They’ll only as that if they’re being honest.
…*ask* that if they’re being honest. (Crap – I *hate* comments boards without an edit feature.)
Then you’ll [sarcastic] love [/sarcastic] the comment feature at the ‘Exiern’ web comic.
Okay, we’ve got the hair cut… Now let’s get her in for a breast reduction.
Kidding! Just kidding!
Oh Monica, you were always fun size. Cute hairdo by the way.
Haha fun size. Fantastic.
That just brings our the pervert in me, so i will stop typing before i say
LOL
Homina homina HOMINA! I love women with pixie haircuts, and Monica is ROCKIN’ THE PIXIE right there! Definitely put her in a Tinkerbelle costume for Halloween!
Long as Kevin is not Peter Pan. Better he go as Capt. Hook.
Ew.
“Fun size”, huh?
Castle Heterodyne refers to its robotic lions (or whatever) as Fun-Sized Mobile Agony and Death Dispensers…
I always thought they were the house cats. 😉
Six of one…
Oh, Monica looks AMAZING like that.
I may be the minority but I have to disagree… What’s with all the ladies in this strip cutting their hair? While I can see Monica having a shorter hair cut this “pixie” cut is not for me… I’ve never been partial to women with boy haircuts in the first place… Shelley’s I could deal with but I fear there will be much cringing in my readership until it grows back…
Sorry Pablo it’s still an amazing comic and I’ll still read but Monica is on the outs with me for now…
Well, not everyone can wear the ‘Pixie’ cut, but Monica shows it well (yup, good move on her part)!
I’ve always thought that the prettiest short hair length is a Dorothy Hamil cut. A bit longer than the pixie Monica is sporting at the moment.
Oh well, it’ll grow back out if she wants it longer again.
Speaking of “boy hair” – as you can see in the Panmel Three of this strip Amy doesn’t actually have “boy hair”, but with it pulled back and the angle in Panel Two, it looks like it … and i love her interaction with her father…
Absolutely adorable! Kevin should have not problems with that 🙂
