That’s an even worse oversight than “Oh, I have this big term project due tomorrow… do we have paper maché, a thousand feet of PVA filament for the 3D printer, and some gallium arsenide transistors?”.
Honestly, I really do not like how Katherine is handling all of this. Castela has over the years been very guarded (with good reason – she’s been a target her entire life) about revealing aspects of herself, and not only has she found out that the people she has most trusted and looked up to have been throwing her and her friends under a microscope, but now when she reveals that some of her hidden memories are starting to come back, a furious anger is directed toward her. This wasn’t “Mama Katherine” yelling at her, but, it was “Director Gilchrist”.
Exactly.
“Yes mom, I’m just fucking telling you now.”
The hesitation or stutter in Stinkweed’s voice shows just how terrifying, uncertain and frightening this must all be.
The person she needed most here was her mom, not the goddamned head of MIB.
How much of that month was Pickle suppressing or ignoring this new voice? When did she realize it was real?
It’s been a month- not so very long, just long enough for Castela to finally be certain that she really isn’t going crazy, and that the voice she now hears is really both outside herself with it’s own information and view of the world and still somehow part of her and bringing in trustworthy data. Time to tell someone.
To yell at and expect Cas to have said anything sooner than right now to anyone, even her mom, is basically being a complete asshole- even if you’re an overprotective mom AND the MIB director. Cas needed to know that this new information she has is either true or demonstrably false before she could share it with anyone else. Failure to do so is referred to as ‘psychosis’.
And let’s be honest here- given Stinkweed’s power level, any hint of psychosis or instability in THIS para would terrify people, cause overreactions and lead to bad outcomes for everyone.
I have to wonder just how much of Kathrine’s reaction is fear and how much is an attempt to reinforce the gravity of the situation.
Teenagers don’t really have a good gauge of what is and is not important, or even “real” and Castela is in the unenviable position of being the equivalent of a walking atomic bomb. I think Castela’s reluctance to say anything until she was dead sure about her situation is warranted, but Kathrine is justified in reminding Cass that _any_ new development in her status demands a report ASAP.
Or … maybe Katherine is scared out of her mind because she knows more about what’s going on and she’s forgetting to be Mom. Think back on the original MIB movie.
In any event, it looks like we’re in for a good story arc.
She stammers when under extreme emotion. I do the same thing because at those times or when you are flat out exahsted you cant focus enough on your speech to control the stammer.
It isn’t cussing, or loud Mom Voice that puts that chill into you. When you hear that quiet “I’m so disappointed in you….” tone, you will move mountains, or square off with Unicron to make things right.
Katherine has her anger in check, despite the black text bubble. Seriously, look at her facial expression. This is not the look of a woman in panic mode. She has some idea of the consequences of Castela’s confession and knows something of what needs to be done in response. She is not a happy camper, granted, but at least she is not freaking out at her daughter.
BEWARE THE POWER OF MOM.
Katherine has just gone into full Mom Warpath mode . . . Beware small cities, and land masses . . .
(Oh, and Stinkweed as well . . . 😉
Don’t know which is scarier to Stinkweed, Kath using her full name or this version of Mom voice
Try to avoid swearing around your kids…so that when you REALLY need to swear, it makes a bigger impression.
Mom is not happy about being blind-sided.
And, really, she does have a point.
That’s an even worse oversight than “Oh, I have this big term project due tomorrow… do we have paper maché, a thousand feet of PVA filament for the 3D printer, and some gallium arsenide transistors?”.
Mom voice is now stuck at maximum. Quick, get Brin to bring tea, jam and scones.

It’s been a long time since we saw Pickle stammering like that . . .
She stammers when under extreme emotion. I do the same thing because at those times or when you are flat out exahsted you cant focus enough on your speech to control the stammer.
Uh oh, The Mom Voice
I notice Castela has regained a little of her stutter. Not without reason…
Katherine! Language!

Yeah, this is neither full mom mode nor full MiB mode.
Katherine: Full Mom Mode
Castela: I’ll go fight Lovecraftian horrors now – it’s less scary.
Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!
I’ll see you and raise you with a Shining Trapezohedron.
I think Katherine’s lock of gray hair is spreading.
I’m pretty sure it’s one way to confirm a sizable time skip: Paul adds to Kath’s “skunk stripe.”
Now to check the archive to confirm my hypothesis. * DIVES *
I love the sweet & innocent “but you still love me. . . right?” look Pickle gives in the 2nd panel.
Considering the wuss Kathrine one was, this is really a change for her (but I guess being a parent will do that…)
Well, Kathrine is 6 entities in 1, but yes, being a parent will do that – think “Mama Tyrannosaurus Rex”.
