Have Mercy!
I come from a family of heart-disease sufferers…(although, they all smoked like a factory-chimney..could be part of their trouble)

Monica’s speech reminds me of something from another comic I read (A Girl and Her Fed).
Here’s a link to the page it made me think of but, before clicking on the link, be warned that it does contain some spoilers: http://www.agirlandherfed.com/1.356.html
The important bit, in relation to Monica’s speech, is the last panel where the heroine states:
“Jesus H, Sparky! It’s a textbook example of American ingenuity!
I wonder if Bud’s going to point out that Lanthia is not the only place that has created things that may have only been thought to be a good thing until it was made (it’s inevitable that any country that invents things would make a few of those).
Actually the comment was about inventions. I won’t use the example in the comic but, when you think about it, it’s not just restricted to America. Any powerful (can’t think of a better word) invention has a good side and a bad side.
For example: Nuclear power could, potentially, be a source of cheap energy but you need to make sure that there are proper safety systems and you need somewhere safe to store the waste it produces.
One that was mentioned at university (in a course that discussed science poilicy) asked: What would you do about a technology that allowed you from one place to another quickly but you have to dig up a lot of chemicals to allow it do that and leads to a lot of direct deaths and indirect deaths through illness? To those who said “ban it”, the tutor remarked that they had just banned the car.
Ok, I see. Well, it all comes down to how very difficult it is to really foresee all the problems associated with any invention. All we can do it is try it out and see what happens. I’m pretty sure Henry Ford had no concept his cheap cars would end up causing 50,000+ deaths a year in America. Not to mention the polution. Still, the benefits far outweigh the problems, and the problems are soluble.
It just brings up what I consider the fundamental motto by which the human species functions: “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Which is why I think Monica is being disingenuous in her assessment.
If the cross has undesired side effects, maybe the Lanthians would have worked out the bugs if they hadn’t been destroyed (admittedly by something they designed and created, and the probable reason that Monica thinks badly of Lanthian technology).
Maybe it’s working as planned but wasn’t designed to be used in this context?
Francisco:
I think the cross was either a prototype, incomplete or faulty… if you had never seen a gun before, you would not know if it was missing something, or even what way to hold it..
Franisco, I had a similar experience where the teacher got most of the class to ban “dihydrogen monoxide” on the grounds that it destroys the environment, has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, and costs tons of money to process.
Yes, there are a number of websites expanding the joke such as: http://www.dhmo.org/
The thing about them is they also show how a load of double-talk and psudo-science can be made to seem “official” and meaningful. It’s something to think about the next time you read some government report on something that is supposedly so bad for you that it just has to be banned now. Remember coconut oil?
I laugh when the new series of ads for “High Fructose Corn Syrup” come on–they claim it’s now no worse than sugar–which seems true enough. Sugar in moderation is not so bad–but who eats it in moderation?
At this point in human history the most benign form of transportation is pictured in my avatar (the cute one on the right, not the furry one on the left) and even it has some serious drawbacks in the creation stage of its lifecycle.
Not really. If you take it from the mining of the minerals to make it, to the final assembly and distribution, etc. it would be far from benign. Lots of polution involved from that and the energy needed as well. Then there is the mfg. of accessories like helmets, pads, gloves and the like. Spare parts. Multiply that by billions. The only (almost) benign form is your legs. But even they require food and shoes (for most people).
The sale of all bicycles or just the type shown on the avatar? Good old nanny state protecting us from ourselves yet again. Now, who protects us from the protectors?
Besides–both the plus and minus could be true. The bike is very efficient for travel–when smooth roads/paths are available. And just because it’s the most environmentally friendly mode available does not mean that it’s perfect. As noted by both the pros and cons, the manufacture is still very polluting. Still, it beats a gas-guzzler hands down. Unless, of course, you’ve got to haul ten tons of something a ways. . . .
Seriously: fire. We’ve had it for thousands of years and we’re still getting killed from having accidents with it.
And the quotation SoWhyMe was thinking of is from Dame Rebecca West: “If the whole human race lay in one grave, the epitaph on its headstone might well be: It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Someone once said something along the lines of “If there was a honkin’ great big red button, with a sign that said in letters a foot tall ‘Do not press this or the world will be instantaneously destroyed’, the paint on the sign wouldn’t have time to dry…”
I was sorta leaning toward it being Mike Kurland, who said “He had long since decided that there were no Things Man Was Not Meant To Know. He was, however, quite willing to say that there were Things Man Was Too Dumb To Figure Out…”
A button like that would be pressed simply because no one would believe it to be real. Now, if everyone 100% believed it would work as advertised (even though it wouldn’t), then you would have a meaningful experiment. Of course it would take only one disgruntled person to press it anyway so I’m not sure it would ever be really meaningful.
There is a constant underlying message here:
Lanthis went under due to their own over-confidence in magic/technology.
We, as a species have our own “magic” that has a habit of biting us in the ass. Our “Magic” is a purely technocratic entity. Mostly devoid of any holistic vision on society, humanism, as a whole, and a dangerously foggy muddling, of science and politics.
We are our own Chimera, every second, every minute, every hour just skirting disaster due to the fragmentation of science, and it’s non-connectedness to”real life” and the “ordinary Joe&Jill” Leading to distrust from both sides. Society towards science, science towards the ability of society to “understand” their lofty theories.
I am by no means a luddite, but the “human measure” is always overlooked when something technologically “great” is invented. If we have a problem, we tend to throw a machine at it (sortof what Monica states), or a highly convoluted theory -that’s only accessible to academics- is implemented to categorize and “fix”stuff..even stuff that does not need “fixing”.
(channeling Foucoult, Kuhn, Popper and Latour here)
Our Science functions in a dangerous “black box”, separated from society to a high degree, with only a “priest-class” understanding some of it, and that “priest-class” is also fragmented, which leads to additional dangers.
Dangers that removed Lanthis from the face of the earth.
I think that Paul gives, by way of this comic, a good picture of the dangers of science that functions as a completely seperate entity from society, and science’s arrogant assumption that everything is “make-able”, an inheritance of the 1900’s machinicism…
I have to disagree, Jay-Em. Humanism is the DRIVING force of scientific research. It’s only in comic books that we get mad scientists saying “Hey, I wonder what would happen if I do this thing!” In the real world (and better-written comics) research is done to cure diseases, alleve suffering, and in general, make things better.
Now, when it comes to APPLICATION, then we start talking money. Which, as we all know, is the root of all evil.
Nowhere did I state that humanism is not one of the driving forces of science, but in most cases, the original idea gets split-up in different specializations and scientists tend to focus on one tiny aspect (it’s sadly the only way to attack complex problems) ,thereby losing view the overall picture, or rather the specialization goes so deep, -say, only observing metastase and it’s speed for staticians, only trying to see what chemicals exist at the sttart of uncontrolled metastase for bio-chemists etc- that the original goal, say fixing cancer, becomes a non-humanism related abstraction.
Same could be said for nuclear physics. Making an atom-bomb wasn’t the original goal of Bohr, Einstein and people like that. They were just trying to understand the nature of matter, particles ,time and lofty stuff like that. There was no social or political scientist with a knack for particle-physics, around that stated: “You know? seeing the theory, it could make an impressively big bomb that will completely upset current societies and relations between nations..let’s not go there hm?”
Einstein is famous for once having stated: “I wish I never told them” when asked if he thought of the implications of his findings.
I am specifically NOT mentioning “Mad-Scientists”. I am only saying that the complexity of todays scientific conundrums is so enormous, that inter-disciplinary splitting the problem up is the only solution, but doing so, detaches the individual diciplines from the overall ,”holistic” -for lack of a better word- impact it could have.
That’s part of what’s meant by the “black-box” of science.
In goes an idea and money, stir all disciplines for a bit, and “pooof” out comes a technologoical marvel. No-one truly understands what really went-on inside the box, and before you know it, it’s impact goes way beyond anything envisioned.(see Internet for a nice example)
I do NOT believe in “mad-scientists’. I waisted enough time in a University with some very active research-branches, to be convinced that most, if not all ,scientists are very conscious people ,mulling deeply about the impact of their research, scrutinizing their motives, but they ALL agreed that they could by no means predict, or oversee the end-result of some inter-diciplinary research on society, and were all very cautious about projections, especially because they aknowledged they did not have the all-seeing eye, and deep knowledge of every discipline to give any meaningful comment beyond “maybe this, or it is possible that”.
They knew that experiments sometimes had unforeseen consequences, that non-scientific people (grant-committees, manager-types etc.) regularly glossed-over, only being able to see the end-benefits ,and closing their eyes (mostly due to non-understanding, not malice) to eventual risks.
To a scientist a 1%chance that something goes “BOOM” is a serious, existing risk, to a money and policy person that same 1% is negligable, and is just dusty professors whining…
No research comission is comprised of true prophets, so even second and third opinions, however well-intentioned and comprised of several disciplines, can be disturbingly wrong if some discovery is let loose on society.
It’s the paradox of today’s science. We do no longer have multi-disciplinarians (say, a Da Vinci, or a Huygens) that can oversee all. We just have to split-up a problem, but in doing so, the eventual impact often gets lost due to that fragmentation.
It gets worse if power-politics enter the fray, but that’s something for a 8 page philosophical paper in 10-points-times new roman..and no pictures…. 😛
Actually it is the uncontrolled love of money that is at the heart of much (not all) evil.
“Let me give you a tip on a clue to man’s characters: the man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.
Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper’s bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another – their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun. ”
Yes: the love of money (greed) is but one of the capital sins. Others include: lust, sloth, anger, vanity, pride, and accedie (ennui). Any of them can be a root of evil–that’s what makes them capital sins, sins that lead us to other sins.
Dang, Paul! First was Monica in those shorts and that top. Now you add Tina to the mix. You’re gonna make out like a bandit with this one. Can eBay handle the traffic?
If everyone bidding on Monica a few day ago had only known what was coming…
reminds me of the episode of family guy, where peter goes to a police auction, and gets out bid for a picture of a boat, only to find that the boat in the picture was the next item in the auction. Hmm… I believe Tina is the boat in this one.
Poor Tina. She finally got her turn to go to the beach and this happens. I’ll bet she bought new handkerchiefs, um I mean, new swimwear just for this trip too.
I hate living in the middle of the country with no beaches around. Never get to see stuff like this >.< I want to see a hot demon girl walking around with two hankerchiefs on and nothing else.
legs…boobs…legs…thighs….hips….boobs…..waist…hips…tiny bikini…boobs…hips…
sorry, my eyes can’t stop wandering… Tina’s legs and M’s boobs are dangerously close…also, very obvious height difference is obvious….
Pet peeve sidetracking: I hate it when women wear logo shirts. Because of how they are made, it lies right on the bust line. Which means that clever little quote or joke or whatever, I can’t figure out what it is supposed to be without looking like some massive pervert. *sigh*
Ah! Then whaddaya think of this one (observed on a Tee on the street)
“Being a perverted wanker makes You near-sighted” in a very wobbly and tiny letter type on -you guessed it- a rather impressive bust-line..
Forget if i’ve mentioned it here or not, but a rather busty friend used to have a shirt that said “I’m perfectly adjusted. Don’t monkey with the knobs.”
FairportFan, you reminded me of a cartoon the appeared in Broadcast Engineering back in the ’80s.
Guy and girl, front seat of car, parked at Inspiration Point.
He’s tuning the radio, “DXing.” (DXing: a somewhat archaic pastime… searching the AM radio band to pick up the most distant signal. DXing was a late-night sport: AM radio waves bounce under the upper layers of the atmosphere, but are squelched by solar radiation.)
She’s on the passenger side of the bench seat, wearing a dejected look and thinking, “Wish he’d play with MY knobs like that!”
Very familiar with DXing; used to listen to WGN and WKYC (or maybe it was KYW then; they bounced that three-letter call back and forth between Cleveland and Pittsburgh a couple times) while driving at night in South Carolina during the winter.
Fairportfan & AmriloJim, that reminded me of this:
As he stared at her ample bosom, he daydreamed of the dual Stromberg carburetors in his vintage Triumph Spitfire, highly functional yet pleasingly formed, perched prominently on top of the intake manifold, aching for experienced hands, the small knurled caps of the oil dampeners begging to be inspected and adjusted as described in chapter seven of the shop manual.
–Dan McKay, Fargo, North Dakota (2005 Bulwer-Lytton Contest Grand Winner)
Everyone appears tall next to Monica. Plus she has her head bowed, making her seem even shorter. Must be difficult. I’d hate to go through life looking up into everyone’s nostrils. Not to mention the neck strain.
I keep trying to work out what the original purpose of the cross was. I have a couple of theories:
1) It’s the Lanthian equivalent of a bio-hazard warning sign. In this case: Beware, Jin isn’t all there.
2) It shows the user their hidden fears. This would require someone to be with the user to remove the cross from them and discuss the experience afterwards.
As bud says, she wasn’t a technologist so doesn’t really understand it. I suspect that Lanthian society was one where only the rich and/or educated had access to high technology and the rest had to do things the old fashioned way.
Ooh, good ideas. But from the bottom, I think that it really is some kind of key or other component – so combine 1 & 2 to make guess 3) the fear effect is to keep people from messing with it. A warning in Lanthian glyphs would only keep away folks who could read (and didn’t want to ‘press the button to find out what it does’); a horrible phantasm could keep morons from messing with it indefinitely.
Actually, Paul did. He said that Tina saw one in a shop, liked it, bought it, and wears it or similar ones as a matter of personal taste and preference.
Your local coffee-shop doesn’t? That sucks..Well, I guess I am reaping the reward from living in a student-filled city.. students that need jobs..Young ,healty female students that need jobs….ehhh..oohkay ,I’ll stop here now… 😆
I’m in a small country by the sea, well-known for it’s wind-mills and wooden shoes (of which I haven’t seen any yet)
We have coffee-shops too (and NO, not only those that sell…ehhhh “herbally enhanced cigarettes” 😆 ) and exchange students. We just got a boat-load of South-American kids..had to brush-up on my spanish. Our small city was flooded with lost, bewildered kids looking for their dorms and campuses, desperately asking for directions, allthewhile discovering their english wasn’t as good as they thought it was.
Great fun though, livens -up a city tremendously.
A couple of entrepeneurial girls already had secured a job at the tapas-bar/coffee-shop. They are quite different from the usual polite, but reserved dutch student barista’s, that’s for sure.
Lord save us from the moral do-gooders. I’ve had to deal with enough of them in my brief life already. I especially “like” the woman who thinks if there was a male version of the scantily clad girls, that would somehow make everything okay. The girls would no longer be “exploited” then. Of course they never were in the first place except to busybodies doing things for our own good by pointing out this alleged exploitation and objectification.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” C.S.Lewis
Oh, and just to (1) prove I can format correctly, and (2) respond to the question of who is more dangerous in their inventions, here are some girls who really scare me.
Nah ,don’t worry Tina, there’s plenty of sand banks in the Bermuda triangle. With a bit of luck there are no nazi-subs around to blow-up, so Bud can come along.. 😆
Good thing that M apologizes to Bud. Her first outburst seemed a bit over the top. Bud can’t help she’s somewhat clumsy, and, indeed, it’s not herfault M touched the artifact…M did that all by herself, despite the warning.
This is just be “the other Shoe Dropping” Monica alluded to when Tepoz rubbed her face in the fact that she might just miss all the exitement.
M is whining again. Time for her photographer-friend to slap some sense in her..
Hahn-dey Tzadle-bay da! Give me spark failure, why dontcha! Pulchritudinal Splendor Alert! I think we need a Wapsi Bikini Calendar, or at least downloadable trading cards.
Bud is only flat next to Monica’s mighty melons; she’s quite reasonably shaped, on her own. Pablo graces us with a selection of female body types, all attractive.
Why not? Scrape off the bottom often enough, and some good buns are bound to turn up. But, it’s time to end this before it gets too base even for this forum.
I don’t know I think she’s pretty hot too. I enjoyed your coloring jobs so much, I thought I’d share one of mine. I was just learning to use Gimp and Inkscape when I did this one. The background is The Library Of Congress, which I thought was appropriate. I hope Paul doesn’t mind. Oh, and Happy Easter.
It’s pretty good, and I like the LoC background, too. I use GIMP because I can use GIMP portable at work. They won’t let me install Photochop on my work computer. I don’t think the tired old thing would work too well with it anyway.
Share more when you make them.
Since you seem interested, I did this one a week or two later. I like how her eyes and dress turned out, but not happy with the skin tones. Those two are all I colored of Paul’s wonderful characters. Maybe I’ll do another one, but I don’t know when. I like your Mystery Machine sub– so fitting. 🙂
Also, bear in mind that (a) Mon is hanging her head slightly, and (b) we can’t see Tina’s feet. She could be wearing high heels, for some unfathomable reason.
The “camera” is at a low angle and Tina is several feet behind her, with compressed perspective of a long lens. Yep, I was a photographer and I think about nerdy stuff like that when I draw. 🙂
Just stumbled upon the comic this past Thursday and just finished reading them all up to date last night. Fantastic comic. I can’t believe I’ve missed out for so long. I hope this continues for another 10 years!
Oh. My heart. By the dessicated skull of Mogg’s holy grandfather… my heart…
G……G…….G…..
…………………….
Holy God!!!! Someone warn me next time. This is not the type of reaction you want when your surrounded by female coworkers!!!!!!!
Thank you Paul.
Tina. Nuff said.
*Goggle* I know Tina is an empty shell being controlled by a frightening committee of ancient demons.
But seeing that bikini I just can’t seem to care.
Beauty often disguises great danger and/or great evil. Especially beware when beauty seeks you out. Something is afoot.
Upon Julia’s Clothes
– by Robert Herrick
Whenas in silks my Julia goes,
Then, then (methinks) how sweetly flows
That liquefaction of her clothes.
Next, when I cast mine eyes, and see
That brave vibration each way free,
O how that glittering taketh me!
As good a poem on emptiness (and how it captures us) as any I’ve come across.
Uh….. whoa?
We knew Katherine cleaned up nice, but…. wowsers!
you know that’s Tina, right? the Barista? Not Kathrine, the Co-worker…
*shrug* Half awake postings and blinded by the beauty plead…
Daang Tina! Who did you steal that bikini from and had she reached puberty yet?
Ummm… a flower girl?
That bandeau top seems kind of tight — perhaps if you loosen it a little bit…
I’ve never seen Ms. Bianchi wear a bikini like that.
Huh. All this time we thought Tina 1.0 was a Mexicana.
Looks as if she might be Brazilian…
At least she has had a good brazilian……
Bad Man!
I did not mean to conjure up that image!
(That’s my story, and i’m sticking to it.)
Whad..whad..whadda..whadda..whaddidIdo??
*feigning innocence..and snickering away..*
uh…. whuh……….
whadaya mean, monica is also there?????? just cannot see anyone else……
It’s dangerous to try to get inside their heads, but I think they meant a Brazilian wax.
If not that, I’d be too afraid to try to figure it out.
eschmenk: See earlier denial.
(Rolls eyes upward, inserts tongue in cheek and whistles innocently…)
Do you mean the denial where it seemed as though you knew what sort of image you had not meant to conjure up?
Why, whatever could you be referring to?
Speaking of Brazilian…
Brazil, all that’s left is a landing strip
Lay down the wax and get a grip
One deep breath and let ‘er rip
It’s just rounding up the strays
Landing strip, Hitler moustache, hardwood floor
There are looks that we all adore
This is what bikini season is for
But we’re not staring just to leer
To all you brave ladies we raise a beer
In our eyes a single tear
And respect we will, the old Brazil
x2
Second line, second stanza THESE.
That is clearly Tina. (Note eyes and chompers) =D
The choker is also a dead giveaway. Now about those monster thighs. . . has she always had those? It might just be an effect of the teeny-bikini.
The ‘Hartman Hips’ aren’t as obvious in her street clothes, either. And she looks very tall, even accounting for the fact that she’s standing next to Monica. Tina’s appearance, in both senses, is a yummy surprise and a fine way to end the week.
Eyes? Oh! Right! Eyes.
A shame Tina doesn’t complement the look with a snug sarong. Sometimes it’s what you don’t see… 🙂
Um, can we start bidding on the panel two artwork now?….
Why certainly! 😀
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160577139791
Swimsuit issue! Swimsuit issue! Swimsuit issue!
2nded!
That wouldn’t be a bad idea. Love seeing those midwest girls at their best. 🙂
Bad Idea! BAAAAAD IDEA!!!
Have Mercy!
I come from a family of heart-disease sufferers…(although, they all smoked like a factory-chimney..could be part of their trouble)
A swim-suit calender does have the probability of doing me in for good..Well..at least I’d be dying with a smile on my face…
‘Specially if one is of Phix in sphinx morph, stretched out and purring in the sunlight, not unlike a huge cat.
Well, if Paul ever decides to do a colored and shaded nude layout of all the girls in sexually suggestive poses, we’ll at least know why you never posted again.
ARRRGH! *twitch twitch*
Budget won’t allow.
“What?” is all I thought when I saw that at first. Then I realized what it was, and I was pleased.
Monica and Bud have just delivered the best lines I’ve seen in ANYTHING in about a solid week (other Wapsi pages not included).
🙂 Paul, you made my whole weekend with this one.
“You’re like Psycho-Steampunks of the Ancient World. Creating shit that blows up in your face, just because you need an automated apple peeler!”
Hrm. That sounds familiar. Flip, flip, flip. Yes, Lanthis sounds an awful lot like the world of Phil Foglios’s Girl Genius. Well now, that certainly an interesting thought.
Oh yes. And then there’s Tina wearing a pair of strings with glandular problems.
* wipes the drool from his chin
Now, now, any self respecting automated apple peeler would be either atomic powered or powered by a tortured soul. It’s just the way it is.
Well, oddly enough, this one does seem to be powered by a tortured soul.
Really, you only need one super-powered golem gerbil, running around on a little wheel. Perfectly safe unless the gerbil gets loose and runs at hundreds of miles an hour through the city, but how often will that happen?
It would feed on the cries of a thousand tiny kittens. :3
Or on the cries of apples being skinned alive.. It powers itself..
At least until you run out of apples to peel.
And then there’s Bud. “Hey, Princess, don’t blame me for this crap!” Add a vest, a good blaster, and a walking carpet and you have a Han Solo cameo… 😀
Quick! Find a new sand bar!
Pfft! Just have Bud take a normal island and reduce it to a sand bar. Crom knows, she has the raw power. :3
pffft… you forget, they have have been there, to be able to poit there…. the remains of the sandbar (now an underwater crater???) must be rock/coral based allowing for a steep dropoff, for stinky to hide in… I guess a few GGs will have to poit a lot of rock infill there, similar to saudi…
ughhh.. have TO have been…..
Paul you lose money in the stock market or something? Last one to eBay is a rotten egg!!! Who knew silver eyed girls would do it for me???
There, there Tina. Lemme give you a nice hug and make it aaaaaallllll better….
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……………..
Oooh… *slobberdrool*
Monica’s speech reminds me of something from another comic I read (A Girl and Her Fed).
Here’s a link to the page it made me think of but, before clicking on the link, be warned that it does contain some spoilers: http://www.agirlandherfed.com/1.356.html
The important bit, in relation to Monica’s speech, is the last panel where the heroine states:
“Jesus H, Sparky! It’s a textbook example of American ingenuity!
“We solve one problem by creating a bigger one!”
I wonder if Bud’s going to point out that Lanthia is not the only place that has created things that may have only been thought to be a good thing until it was made (it’s inevitable that any country that invents things would make a few of those).
More specifically, typical American Liberal’s “ingenuity.”
I think that’s Monica being Monica. Not really thinking about what she’s saying.
I’m not sure that Bud was only thinking about Lanthians when she said “over-educated morons”, btw.
And then he told them they’d banned water.
And it’s an essential component in most acids, the biggest one, in fact, in acid rain.
The really humorous part about the dihydrogen monoxide joke is that some politician actually does fall for it every couple of years!
The sale of those is in the process of being banned in the USA under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.
No, this is not a joke.
@ Fairportfan – I do believe that was the philosopher Pratchettese.
I believe that you are correct.
No; it would get pressed because someone just had to find out.
Wyvern said: Seriously: fire. We’ve had it for thousands of years and we’re still getting killed from having accidents with it.
It’s just so dang easy to set. Even the weather can do it!
Blame the plants. They’re the ones that make most of the oxygen.
How does political leaning enter into it?.. people of all stripes are equally capable of colossal f*ckups of scientific and other natures.
Agreed.
Any invention: Be it physical or policy will have unintended consequences.
The Law of Unintended Consequences. It’s older than dirt.

😛
I have to disagree, Jay-Em. Humanism is the DRIVING force of scientific research. It’s only in comic books that we get mad scientists saying “Hey, I wonder what would happen if I do this thing!” In the real world (and better-written comics) research is done to cure diseases, alleve suffering, and in general, make things better.
Now, when it comes to APPLICATION, then we start talking money. Which, as we all know, is the root of all evil.
@STJason.
Mebbe I tried to cover too much in one sweep.
Wow, these comments take half the site!!!! 😉
-Francisco d’Aconia
WAIT–Paul’s selling a real honest-to-God semi-live TINA!?!?
Fine, fine, I’ll figure out how to buy stuff on line! 😉
Nonsense; Tina’s also wearing her choker, which has about as much fabric as her bikini top.
So…what do the pretty demon girls wear in your area?
Snowsuits. http://wapsisquare.com/comic/not-going-anywhere/
legs…boobs…legs…thighs….hips….boobs…..waist…hips…tiny bikini…boobs…hips…
sorry, my eyes can’t stop wandering… Tina’s legs and M’s boobs are dangerously close…also, very obvious height difference is obvious….
Is it really staring if they are at eye level?
Still is! I get Rochester after 9.
After relocating from Michigan to Kansas, my mother was pleasantly surprised she could still get WJR out of Detroit at night…
–Dan McKay, Fargo, North Dakota (2005 Bulwer-Lytton Contest Grand Winner)
bmonk, I thought that was a quote from an episode of Northern Exposure. 😯
I did enjoy Northern Exposure–but no, I got it off the internet.
Shades of Charybdis and Scylla. Tie me to a mast….gouge out my eyes.
There’s enough sunlight to read the morning paper
JUMPING HORNY TOADS! Ti… Ti…. TINA!
btw I knew she was tall but… DAY-MNA
Everyone appears tall next to Monica. Plus she has her head bowed, making her seem even shorter. Must be difficult. I’d hate to go through life looking up into everyone’s nostrils. Not to mention the neck strain.
Though she is fairly tall as evidenced here:
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/moodywhensober/
And here:
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/tinycrisisaverted/
About as tall as Brandi.
She’s probably just a shade under six feet…
…and I’m going to go sit in the penalty box for the unintentional joke.
But those are the best kind!
…and now that I figured it out, I’ll tip the jar for you.
Adds another dollar to the pun jar!
There, you’re covered.
I keep thinking it’s a biohazard containment device.
Wait… It just hit me.
“looked LIKE Jin”… That doesn’t mean that it was Jin. Could it be that her family (the royal family?) resembled her?
The question then is ‘what did Jin’s aunt/grandma/whatever do that was so bad that the Lanthians kept her memory in the cross thing?’
Hmm..could be. I remember that somewhere it was stated that Jin was only one in a long maternal-line of witches/scientists.
Would make sense.
Part of me still believes the apparition is one of the “fractured” parts of Jin’s mind, though.
Tina – perfect timing as usual…
Um… No more sandbar. They can use my place. Please? Pretty Please?
And I got a nice walled garden, complete with adirondacks (and I mowed the grass just today)
*jumps up and down behind Bud-Fanboi waving hands to attract Tina’s attention*
That is so like Tina to still be wearing her choker with that … ensemble.
Remember it keeps her head attached.
i think that was a joke question on monica’s part. it’s never stated by tina that it keeps her head attached
No – but she’s only been seen once without it…
Sorry my wit didn’t come through in type. I was referecing it as a joke.
Right. Besides, how can a choker keep her head on? That would be silly. It just covers up the duct tape that keeps her head on.
I got that it was a joke.
But it’s an interesting fact i intend to keep mentioning until Paul admits it has some Deep Significance.
Or not.
Actually, Paul did. He said that Tina saw one in a shop, liked it, bought it, and wears it or similar ones as a matter of personal taste and preference.
Yep, Fatuncle is correct. 🙂
Hah! You’re just trying to throw us off the track!
Of course, she might like the chokers because they strike her as being more esthetically pleasing than duct tape. Just saying —
Are you guys remembering that Paul’s original explanation here was in response to Fairportfan?
Dem hipz
Oh noes…Talimancers? Even here??? Aaaahh..run when you still can!!
😛
It’s Friday! We get to look at this all weekend and the only cliff-hanger is where they end up going to the beach. A great kick-off to the weekend!
Muh-HOMmina…!
*jaw hits floor with resounding SPLAT*
Why the hell my local coffee shop don’t got baristas like that?
*weeps at the unfairness of the Real World*
Your local coffee-shop doesn’t? That sucks..Well, I guess I am reaping the reward from living in a student-filled city.. students that need jobs..Young ,healty female students that need jobs….ehhh..oohkay ,I’ll stop here now… 😆
Mine does
http://videos.oregonlive.com/oregonlive/2008/07/bikini_coffee_companys_grand_o.html
🙂
Meh..blondes..boooring.. i’ll have the beautiful, raven-haired latina exchange-students at our corner coffee-shop annex Tapas-Bar..
You’re in Portland too? Cool! I’ve actually never been in there; how’s the coffee?
Nope.
Jay-Em–maybe they exported all the wooden shoes to a nearby larger country to use for sabotage
@ bmonk
C’est possible, Oui.. Ca ‘t explaine pourquoi ils sont disparu..
Observed in my long and useless life: Do-Gooders, whining about PC “objectification” of Men&Women are almost never those that are worth looking at…
Urkk! I meant “Do-Gooders, PC-whining about “objectification” etc. etc.
Calvin once asked a <a href="http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1986/04/14")similar question.
Oh, and just to (1) prove I can format correctly, and (2) respond to the question of who is more dangerous in their inventions, here are some girls who really scare me.
Nice Bagels!
Awww..poor Tina..She looks really disappointed.
Nah ,don’t worry Tina, there’s plenty of sand banks in the Bermuda triangle. With a bit of luck there are no nazi-subs around to blow-up, so Bud can come along.. 😆
See what you did, Bud?
Now Tina can’t enjoy the beach.
Time for her photographer-friend to slap some sense in her..
was she there the whole time?
So — will the person (people) who colorized Monday’s strip please do the same for this one too? 10-Q!
That was my second thought on seeing today’s strip…
Well, maybe third…fourth?
Okay, it was a thought that I had eventually on seeing today’s strip…
Oh, and here’s a link to a bit of yesterday’s art I fiddled with…
http://img861.imageshack.us/i/dollarthinkpadcovercolo.png/
ooh..niiice. The blue bits give the “thing” a decidedly techy-vibe..
damn, M’s eyes are really buggin’…can’t see it that well in black and white..
Very nice Jabberwonky!
I agree with Jay-Em; that really brings out the Mysterious Artifact vibe. Bud is looking pretty nice herself.
Here’s the work in progress…there’s a 1024 wallpaper right next to it…
I’m making a 1440 wallpaper, even as we speak.
http://img708.imageshack.us/i/20110422notgoingcolor.png/
durk-durk-durk-durk
Oh, swell. I had just picked up & re-attached my jaw and put my eyes back in my head, right before I clicked on that. Thanks a lot, Jabberwonky.
(seriously. Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou)
Not the final version, but close…
http://img718.imageshack.us/i/20110422notgoingcolor.png/
Tina… hot…
This has been your Gratuitious Tina Shot of the Week.
Hahn-dey Tzadle-bay da! Give me spark failure, why dontcha! Pulchritudinal Splendor Alert! I think we need a Wapsi Bikini Calendar, or at least downloadable trading cards.
bikini calendar machine? heh.
Well, I guess we all know where Paul is on the whole “Steampunk / Steam Punk / Steam-Punk” debate.
THE WRONG SIDE!
😀
After all the above erudite soaping (and slobbering) my two cent’s is that it’s a Lanthian meat tenderizer.
No, it’s a skimpy bikini.
heh heh!
Is that Tina??? She’s as buxom as me! 😯
A statement like that, screams for proof. Pics please. 😉
WHOAH! 0.0 Tina’s tiny bikini is tantalizingly terrific!!!
The fan service portion of Wapsi has just finished. Please take your hats and coats as you leave.
Good lord. If you could weaponize sexy then they wouldn’t need explosives to have destroyed that island.
Bud is so…so…FLAT!
But SOMEBODY had to do it.
Hush now! Bud already has self-image problems, and antagonizing an all-powerful golem about her bust-line is a very VERY bad idea!
Send her to my place. I love her TEETH!
Hey! It’s about quality, not quantity. I love Bud’s bust line. Aaand, I’m a leg man, myself. She’s got that in spades!
http://img854.imageshack.us/i/budslegs.png/
Bud is only flat next to Monica’s mighty melons; she’s quite reasonably shaped, on her own. Pablo graces us with a selection of female body types, all attractive.
^^That!
I’m a fan of Bud in all her glory, I love the way she looks.
If I had money to spare, I’d pay it for Bud’s figure.
Monday: Tina dejectedly turns around and stoops over to pick up her beach towel…
…please?
Something fundamentally interesting about that request…
Interesting and dangerous for the elder gentlemen amongst us…
Oooo, good pun.
Why not? Scrape off the bottom often enough, and some good buns are bound to turn up. But, it’s time to end this before it gets too base even for this forum.
Hey – does Mucho Mocha serve cheesecake?
You have to go to Monica’s for the best cheesecake…
had to adjust my screen name to get a Gravatar… sigh
That shouldn’t be necessary. The gravatar is tied to your email address, not the “Name” you use here.
Isn’y it a combination of the two?
Yes. I had trouble with gravatars for a while before I figured out a workaround.
Huh. Made a post; it’s not here. Maybe i messed up the HTML.
What i said:
Either Monica has shrunk or Tina has grown since 2008…
I think we are seeing an artifact of perspective, with Tina standing closer to the fourth wall.
I’d say Tina would have to be in front to appear that much taller in proportion to Monica in relation to the 2008 drawing.
Actually, i’d noticed things before that i could tell were photographically-inspired; seems to me that we’ve seen lens flare in a couple strips.
Ah! The shot of Bud and Tina on the dance floor!
Yeah, if the two people were standing next to each other, it wouldn’t be Tina, it would be Phix.
And the camera angles are one of the best not-exactly-blatent-story parts of this comic. It’s fun to figure out where the camera is. 🙂
No, I was referring to the 2008 drawing, not today’s comic.
Agggh. I meant to include something about “…if you’re not talking about the 2008 drawing…”
Just stumbled upon the comic this past Thursday and just finished reading them all up to date last night. Fantastic comic. I can’t believe I’ve missed out for so long. I hope this continues for another 10 years!
Welcome to the club; now go get some sleep 😀
Yeah. We might even be on the third story arc by then!
Hey, this artwork is MINE!! Who’s bidding it up so I can’t afford it???
😉
i am impressed at the “boob physics” just btw
Whoa. That bikini is just… whoa. If Bud had been wearing that on the sand bar, there might have been a plane crash.
