Yes, but this is often how people find out the current state of the relationship without coming right out and saying “dump him/her and go with me!” Besides, wapsinoia has me in it’s grips. I see hidden agendas behind every gesture and conversation.
Also, while it has been shown Shelly was straight, that is no gurantee she still is after 80K years of another life. In that much time she could have flipped back and forth often. Heck, even a short human lifespan can find people flipping back and forth, let alone a thousand lifetimes.
You know, I never stopped shipping these two. Then again, I’ve always thought Heather was awesome on a stick wrapped in bacon, and I have been listening to songs about never giving up on love tonight (bunch of old stuff got back into iTunes), so I may be prejudiced at the moment.

Shelly a lesbo? Nope.. She’s Bi- at best, and a girl-crush doesn’t mean a whole lot.
Shelly was pretty adamant that she crushed bad, but in an entirely non-sexual way. I tend to believe that Shelly, due to her past, was not very into the multiple crushes that almost every teen girl seems to get.
She kept hanging onto Owen, mainly because he was “no-danger” and a nice blanket to cover herself, so she didn’t have to go on the scary and often sad path of dating and such..
I think that Heather is the only one that Shelly really dares to confide in. Her relationship with her was sort of 60% surrogate big sister and 40% girl-crush.
I am still unclear on the Heather dream-bit.(many moons ago) It almost seemed that Shelly had consciously drawn Heather into her dreams. It’s the Wapsi-Universe, so, shared dreaming isn’t off the table…
Its been 80k years! With the only company is the litter girl who lives inside her head and some sphinxes. Who knows what Shelly is any more.
I personally think she should experiment first, before declaring a major.
Mary: I had this guy leave me a voicemail at work, so I called him at home, and then he emailed me to my BlackBerry, and so I texted to his cell, and now you just have to go around checking all these different portals just to get rejected by seven different technologies. It’s exhausting.
Yes. Feminine fits exactly. There is a softness and gentleness that didn’t exist before. And I guess I would add patience and peacefulness as well. One has no need to feel rushed after 80,000 years of contemplation
She doesn’t work at the garage anymore, unless it’s part time.
She’s a personal trainer and a kick-boxing instructor at Punk Yoga. Not picking nits. http://wapsisquare.com/comic/squeee/
I want to see her re-acquaintance with dad.
She looks serene – just waiting – not worrying or aggonizing or being impatient – she only has to wait for a few minutes; after 1,450 years between visits, she can probably hold her breath that long.
I really like panel 2, and not for the story. That fuzz around Shelly extends to Heather, showing that both of them are deep in thought. I suspect Shelly is coming to grips with her life, fixing mistakes and generally acting more like a grown-up than a troubled teen. But I also suspect that Heather, neck-deep in relationship issues, is pondering her own future and laying the foundations for future tough decisions.
I very much like watching characters mature. It makes me think there may be hope for me yet. 😉
Given that i’m sixty-three and not really expecting to live all that much longer (nothing in particular, just pessimism), i doubt i’ll have enough time.
you come across as much younger 🙂
and since i suspect people are as old as they seem not their length on this earth – you have plenty of time.
(and you are..just sayin’ not 63 🙂 then again i have not yet once met anyone who seemed to be over 55. barring those who died shortly after meeting them and THEY seemed to be 90+)
no actually i said it abit wrong. i ment family not random strangers. i can see my family every day but just before they die they seem so old…even if they die randomly (heart attack random not bus crash random) and not from an expected illness.
Heh. And here I had thought you were younger than me (52).
Explains your love of Fairport Convention, at least – I had thought about asking where you’d heard of them. I got into them through high school friends who loved Steeleye Span and Martin Carthy. It’s a lot easier to get their music these days than it used to be. (Listening to _Red and Gold_ just now, as it happens)
Heh. I picked up Full House in 1972 after hearing “Sir Patrick Spens” on WREK, the Georgia Tech station.
I managed to get to Cropredy in 1990 and ’92. (My stepdaughter has the official Festival Tours sweatshirt from ’92 now; i’m too fat for it), and i’ve managed to catch them three times here in the States…
…and one more thing i forgot to mention – my youngest sibling is fifty-two.
Brother David (as in David Weber, as in “Honor Harrington”) is (well, will be – our birthdays are two days apart in October) fifty-nine, and our sister (Kathrin) will be fifty-seven next month…
I’m irritated with Heather; it sounds like she’s trying to make Vickie’s decision for her, which is not her right. The most common reason I’ve seen for this is that the person saying it is having second thoughts about the relationship (or bluntly wants out) but doesn’t want to step up and say “I don’t want you anymore.” It’s an excuse that puts the blame for the failure of the relationship on the other person… not nice.
I tend to see that different. Heather was always blaming herself for “ruining everything” She was totally miffed that, when Shelly got a bowling-ball on her head, that it for the first time seemed to work-out, but that the accident could rip Shelly away from her.
Moving in together, is quite the step. I do not know how marriage-laws for same-sex couples work for Minnesota, but it’s he first step towards marriage.
It seems natural to me to have doubts, and think it over thoroughly. There’s quite the difference between “falling in love”and deciding to share the rest of Your life with a certain person. A difference that -sadly- a lot of people forget, blinded by “love” lust and infatuation…
My parents ,together till death parted them(!) always pressed upon me and my sis’ to think a relation over pretty deep before taking the “plunge” They were together for 40 years, so they knew what they were talking about.
Good observation. I have to agree.
80000 years of solitude seems to have changed Shelly into the wise person a sphinx is supposed to be, and the wise person she always was below the noise and bluster.
“it sounds like she’s trying to make Vickie’s decision for her”
I’m not really sure where you’re getting that from. Vickie has made her decision already. Heather has doubts; that’s not the same thing as trying to control Vickie.
heather isn’t saying that she doesn’t want to be with vickie.
she is kinda using her anxiousness over vickie wanting to move in together instead of confronting her own issues on the relationship. she should decide on whether she wants to be with vickie for full and tell her that OR decide whether she wants to be with vickie for the here and now..which is what i suspect she does. Either way she is using the fact ‘vickie is being so understanding’ as a cop out. Vickie is NOT perfect. she just wants the relationship more than heather seems to want it.
the classic
“its not you its me” phrase could be used in that break up…
It’s the preciseness of her phrasing that leapt out at me. ‘almost screams out that she’s the right one for me’ but ‘I’m not sure I’m the right one for her’. The first statement is her take on her own commitment, or lack thereof, or in the range between. Of note, it’s a rather passive statement — she isn’t making the choice herself. The second part is where it feels like she’s making the excuse that she may not be right for Vickie. Isn’t that VICKIE’s choice to make? Heather can decide that SHE does or does not want to commit to the relationship at that level, but it sounds like she’s trying to slough off the responsibility of not committing.
I’m not sure about Heather’s cleavage in the last panel. It seems like the position of her shoulders would put her breasts at a slight angle and that the lines of cleavage would be lower and less dramatic due to her smaller cup size.
Okay, when I saw ‘adjusted’ I got a mental picture of a typical grease monkey mechanic with a socket on a long extension cranking away at a woman’s décolletage…
That’s OK. Just thinking about “boobs in some really strange places” is bound to throw many guys’ thought processes out of whack.
Actually, I’m surprised at the lack of hits on google for that phase. There isn’t hardly anything for “boobs in strange places”, either. I would have expected there to be at least one dedicated website because of rule 36/51. Maybe I just triggered rule 35. 😕
It’s always very strange, when two people seem so right for each other….and yet, not quite right. Well, perhaps it isn’t that serious; maybe Heather is just having cold feet, so to speak.
Looks like it, and is explainable too. Apparently Heather has had some unpleasant experiences in relationships, experiences she seemed to blame herself for.
“Cold feet” usually means one party of the relationship isn’t really ready to give up part of the lifestyle they are used to.
I have seen this most often with people who have been single for awhile. They want the company, the sex, the general ‘being together’ bit, until it might mean they have to actually step up and put more thought and effort into things. Or heaven forbid, actually change their “comfortable” lifestyle.
It can mean that they don’t feel as strongly about the other, or it can be purely selfish “I don’t want to change my comfortable lifestyle and take a risky step” mentality.
I think that Shelly is not just listening, this is leading to something she wants to tell/discuss with Heather, and that her inquiry about her relationship is just an icebreaker. She did call heather, after all, not vice versa.
First time commenter here. Paul, you are blowing my mind with this storyline. Ever since just before Shelly #1 died, both art and storytelling has been completely astounding. Shelly looking so absolutely beautiful in that last panel today meant I finally had to comment. Amazing job. Now that I’ve gushed I’ll go back to lurking. *cough*
I read it a bit differently. Shelly might be looking towards Heather, but more with intense listening, but I think Heather is more looking into the ether, as she’s busy thinking things through.
(Or maybe Heather is watching Shelly’s hand transform into a Sphinx paw?)
I know when I am in a “listening” pose I tend to turn whichever ear is closer more towards the person and look down or away in order to focus on what they are saying more.
That’s how I see the last panel with Shelley’s pose anyway. But could be wrong. 🙂 Maybe’s wondering when Heather grew boobs since she saw her last, lol.
It could be that Heather is looking at Shelly’s hand. The art draws our attention that way. Shelly’s hand does look different than it did recently. The way Shelly was posed a couple of days ago may have been an attempt to show us her normal human hands and today Heather sees a difference. Shelly may be looking down because Heather is, but I don’t know what she is looking at, if anything.
I just thought that Shelly and Heather were each looking at both their hands, placed close enough together to be suggestive, but far enough apart to be deniable; a nice trick of using implied lines and perspective to draw the viewer’s eye to a certain spot. The cleavage thing just doesn’t make sense to me; Shelly was interested in Heather, not so much her body, as the older strips make pretty clear.
Well, what Shelly was or was not interested in doesn’t really matter much anymore. She could be a much different person now with an entirely different outlook and set of interests.
Thank you, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one that feel this way about referring to him as Officer TB…
(But I’d given him the last name Time.)
So many possibilities ready to spring from this point! Will Shelly try for a more intimate relationship with Heather?
Is she attempting to reestablish bonds with friends after her long/short exile in the ‘Wald?
Is this just her Sphinx instinx kicking in, and she needs to stick her nose in other businesses-es-es?
Did mother-$%&#ing Timmy fall into that well again? Gods, what a moron!
The answer to these, and other questions…
(why do birds fall from the sky everytime you walk by?)
….Next week, at Wapsi Square!
It may be during her 80,000 years of virtual solitude and contemplation that shelly realized how important Heather was to her personal growth. Heather was the one who helped her deal with her issues of being alone and keeping everyone at arms length. Since heather hasn’t had any screen time since the GG showed up, I’m guessing that Shelly sort of let her slip away. Shelly wants to recconect with her on any level, I think. And I think Heather did notice “Shelly’s nails look really sharp and pointed.”
Shelley could be taking the “Guardian” post with all the people she cares about. Trying to help them in any way she can after finally realizing how fragile life it and how short a normal lifespan is.
The one thing I can remember from a recent archive crawl is a scene where Jin hugs Shelly just before Heather shows up and Shelly is caught between trying to reassure Jin (who has seemed upset up until that point), not let Heather get the wrong idea and being annoyed at Jin (realising the timing probably was delibrate).
Actually, Jin waits till Heather gets there, then act like a woman spurned, to the point, as i recall, of hanging on to Shelly’s ankle and getting dragged along the floor as Shelly tries to run after Heather to explain … and then enjoys Shelly’s discomfiture.
I think it’s not long after that that Shelly lights into Jin with an I-can’t-think-of-anyone-who’d-care-if-you-died-type verbal assault, and Jacqui (i think) reads her the riot act about intentionally trying to inflict pain.
I still can’t get over how different and stunning Shelly looks now so I went looking in the archive for some comparisons.
I had to go back a long ways – It’s been over seven years since Heather and Shelly connected and Shelly cut her hair! How time flies when you’re engrossed!
Compare Heather & Shelly on 01-09-2004 to today to see the vast difference between then and now. Not only has Shelly’s emotional state and personality drastically changed but Paul’s artwork has evolved and improved as well. Although Shelly still has the angular jaw, a few subtle rounding of the hairline and eyes, softening of the lips and viola! A new Shelly.
I am also continually amazed on how eyes, especially the eye brows, can be so expressive – on people as well as animals.
Some other strips to compare (go to the archives or edit the above URL):
01-05-2004: Heather & Shelly arc start
03-29-2004: Shelly cut off hair
06-12-2007: Later face view
The expressiveness of eyebrows is why the eyes and eyebrows are visible, even through thick hair. A lot of times eyebrows wind up suspended in the air above the character’s eyes, particularly if an animal is involved. Snoopy’s sometimes did and I think Dietzel’s eyebrows have, too.
That’s one of the things that amaze me about this strip. There is foreshadowing of event YEARS ahead of events. Either Paul is the luckiest writer in the history of the written word, or he is the one of the best.
I vote for the latter.
I was just re-watching the first episode of Babylon 5 – after having been stopped from doing something that would be suicidal, Londo remarks (perhaps a bit bitterly) “It seems I am still on target for my appointment twenty years from now.”
You had no idea of the context of my avatar? Oh, my. If you get the chance, do watch some Daria. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but well worth a look.
My own Daria question: what’s her connection to Thessaly in Sandman? There’s a fanfic waiting to happen.
it makes sense, at least for me. ^^
i see CG as mirror of shellys inner emotional state and at this moment shelly is near her true “self”, if that makes any sense.. ^^;
cannot think of anything to say so *gives round of applause*
how are you making this btw?
wire and…modling clay?
sorry i seem to recal someone else asking you a similar question but i cannot recall which comment it was on 🙁
Absolutely great work! If I may make an observation, however, she doesn’t actually seem to have knees. The upper part of Her legs appear to terminate directly into the animal legs (hocks?). Any knee she might have seems to be backwards at that terminator. Sort as if her legs were broken at the knee and pushed back to bend in the opposite direction from normal.
Correct! And most of it is covered in fur too, so it’s a bit hard to determine how</i. nudge is "constructed. Although I believe Pablo used goat-legs as reference.
"True to comic-Nudge" is going to be the next. This is "exercise in odd-anatomy Nudge".. 😛
I haven't sculpted for years (academy of fine arts sorta took the "fun" out of it) So this is going to be "Nudge as she might appear in real life” to get back to my former level.
Making a good likeness of a comic-character in 3d is pretty hard.
At the moment it sorta slowed down. The head is giving me headaches 😆 I am on my 3rd try now. I am now using Freema Agyeman’s face as reference. She has the lively, square, but pretty, funny and “naughty” face I was looking for(see her grin, and know what I mean).
So yeah, I am prolly’ gonna disappoint a few people who had other people in mind for Nudge. Sorry guys (and girls) 🙁
did you see the episode where they made homer simpson 3d?Doesn’t really look like his 2d character 🙂
wouldn’t surprise me if the same happens here 😀
but the previews you’ve given are awesome so the ending result will be awesome also.
You know, I was kind of sort on a high after I had finished my coloring of the “Is She Back” comic (seen here for comparison –> http://solbet.deviantart.com/art/Wapsi-Square-Comic-Colored-211215512 ). But this hit me in the exact same way for the reason I don’t cruise deviantart much. It’s called committing artistic suicide, lol. I am blown away by the sheer beauty and detail of the sculpture and wish I had the cash to buy it off you, lol. I doff my hat to you, Jay.
Been putting this off, but I must say that I love the new look you’re doing for Shelly. While the ‘younger’ Shelly was cute, the ‘older’ Shelly has an air of maturity that is coming across in your art that is very pleasing.
the face of this shelly looks (to me) very/really different then the face of previous shelly. her lips are more full and her face has a different shape
Nice to see Shelly listening, and more confident than the last time we saw her and H together…
…and it’s interesting the viewer’s eye is drawn to their hands in that last panel.
One thing Paul doesn’t do is draw feminine hands.
Hands are notoriously hard to draw so I wouldn’t fault Paul on that.
OTOH what if Heather is seeing something about Shelly’s hand that escapes us?
Like maybe some fingernails that are more like claws than they used to be.
I noticed the claw-like fingernails on Shell too.. Hmmm…
or the hobbit like ones on heather…
and as a guy that can barely draw a stick figure, I just wish I had 10% of Paul’s talent… 😛 🙂
I’m not faulting Paul. He’s an accomplished artist who could easily draw slender hands; he just doesn’t. It’s not his style, in the Wapsi series anyway.
illiad- Sarcastic whine on/ You artist you mean you can draw a stick figure! I am so scared of you. whine with sarcastic overtones off/
Ratcatcher: ROFLMAO 🙂
Hey, you havent seen it…:(:(
He can draw slender, feminine hands, and has, but it’s rare:

Ah, you’re right, he has drawn slender hands. I guess I should say it’s not his style “lately.”
This seems a little rude, but I noticed the my eye was drawn to the hands. But Shelley’s weren’t. (Sorry, it’s just what I saw.)
i totally have to agree there lol
agreed
Yup.. Heather apparently discovered the wonderbra, or silicone ünderserts”
Heather looks like she’s dressed for sexual conquest and Shelly is asking probing questions about her current relationship. Both are up to something.
Shelley isn’t asking “probing questions” about Heathers sex life. All she asked was “hey, how are you and XYZ doing?” which is what you do with friends you haven’t seen in awhile, and hope they are happy.
Geeze, what is is with everyone seeing sub-plots that aren’t necessarily there. It’s been proven Shelley doesn’t go that way.
Doesn’t? Didn’t. It wasn’t as if she was unaware of the option.
Oz, anytime Paul finds something important enough to put in the comic, there must be a reason. It’s perfectly logical to jump into the subplot maelstrom.
Really. Perfectly logical. Honest. 😯 😀
Yes, but this is often how people find out the current state of the relationship without coming right out and saying “dump him/her and go with me!” Besides, wapsinoia has me in it’s grips. I see hidden agendas behind every gesture and conversation.

Nope not at all and welcome to the good ship, CherryPop! We have cookies! 🙂
Cookies? Where? Was there a memo?
What, you didn’t get the newsletter? Oh, that’s right. Only I got the newsletter because I was the only member of this ship!
Better sailor than Jack Sparrow, you are… He couldn’t crew a ship all by his onesie.
@Danzier: But he tried; granted it was landlocked, and crewed by hallucinatory copies of himself – extenuating circumstances, say I!
They named a ship in my honor? *blush*
I hope they keep things clean on that ship.
Shipping can be such a dirty business.
That is a tough, tough place to be. Best of luck to her.

Depends precisely how you’re defining “ate Heather Alive”.
Actually I find the devouring the flesh from the bone meaning less gross than the oral sex connotation.
SWM, while I respect your right to an opinion, it must be said that I find it extremely sad that you feel that way.
Aww, don’t worry about it, we all have our hangups and our reasons for having said hangups..
i actually find that meaning abit gross also 😛
the full lips thing was how she was drawn when she first appeared in the comic.
she just lost her girlyness over the strips
perhaps not being human made her want to reclaim it.
i wonder if sphinx do eat people. i mean they killed em sure but munching?
Rumor has it that humans taste like freezerburned chicken, cooked in green olives, then left in the refrigerator for seven months.
I wouldn’t touch that with a nine-foot pole. 😉
This why we go for the vegans first. They should taste considerably better.
There is a theory why we survived as a species with all those powerful predators out there. We tasted bad because we were also meat eaters. Meat eaters prefer to eat the vegetarians.
since human meat is chemically closest to pig… i’d wager that’s what we taste like…
I’ve read where actual cannibals describe it as tasting like pork. The term “Long Pig” is used sometimes.
The meat of big cats – particularly the mountain lion* – is described as being quite good.
And near meat is supposed to be tasty. (Of course, bears, like pigs and humanjs, are omnivores.)
=====================
*Having already contributed one risqué comment in this discussion about eating things, i refrained from using the word that first came to mind, “cougar”.
Arrrgh. “bear meat”. I was not talking about SPAM.
@Fairportfan: Oh, now you’ve opened a can of SPAM. I think it gets a bum rap; spices, pork, ham – what’s bad? Granted the packaging is unimaginative (but nevertheless copied by competitiors).
However, I do have issues with the jelly. Jelly? What and why?
‘People who love sausage and the law should never witness either being made’ – some sausage-hating lawyer somewhere.
i think the jelly is to keep it ‘fresh’ so to speak.
they use the jelly in all meat canned products.
even jelly around the meat in a pork pie.
I happen to have an eleven-foot Hungarian available.
I believe that the “sausages and laws” comment is generally attributed to von Bismarck – who would know.
As to the gelatin in Spam cans (and other places), it’s basically a result of the processing.
I’ve never had Spam (that I’m aware of, anyway). So they pack jello-like gelatin in the can? Is it all through the “meat?” Sounds yuckawful.
nah
its like a jelly coating
its also in tinned ham and tinned chicken
Actually, I’m fine with a bit of character development… And besides, you can’t build tension well without ‘lulls’ in the action.
But yeah, I also want to see a bit more of Heather… She’s one that would add another dynamic to Wapsi… after all, letting Amanda in on the ‘secret’ made things that much more interesting… so why *not* make Heather a regular character?
Right, like there aren’t already enough dynamics and odd characters in the story.
(grins)
mhhh shelly looks nice with long hair but i miss her shorter hairdo.
agree. she is beautiful with this new long hair, but I miss her punky short ‘do too.
Interesting place for Shelly to find herself.
Two or three ways she could go, most of which would be disasters either for just herself or for Heather as well.
im almost convinced of my theory from yesterday

Ouch! Hey the pun jar just landed on my foot. Great comic though.

Its been 80k years! With the only company is the litter girl who lives inside her head and some sphinxes. Who knows what Shelly is any more.
I personally think she should experiment first, before declaring a major.
“The one who gooed” ?? ieuuuwww…. (channeling Katherine here.. 😆 )
Paula, that is an awesome new phrase. I’m going to use that now the next time I die online. Maybe you’ve started a trend.
its from a film so i cannot claim it 🙂
but it is a good film
to me anyway 🙂 one of my favs
in fact. loads of stuff you can quote 🙂
Mary: I had this guy leave me a voicemail at work, so I called him at home, and then he emailed me to my BlackBerry, and so I texted to his cell, and now you just have to go around checking all these different portals just to get rejected by seven different technologies. It’s exhausting.
oh the gooed. sure 🙂
@Paula: Thanks to you, I spent a while trying to figure out how someone died a horrible death in that film. 🙄 😆
Now I want to know how you made it so that it’s impossible to reply to your other 2:24 comment (one level lower.)
😳 OK, it wasn’t one level lower. I swear that sometimes these don’t line up right.
@eshmenck
heh sorry 🙂
i got confuzzled abit there 🙂
thought they ment the quote ‘you’re my exception’ which i personally think is awsome and very romantic ^^
will be interesting to see how this plays out…
hands 🙂
awww Heather don’t be so hard on yourself.
Shelly is looking so strikingly CLASSY now. That’s the first word that comes to mind.
She looks calm, poised, self-assured, gorgeous(that long hair just adds to the allure!), accepting – classy!
What a change. The image of this Shelly throwing an engine block across the room just will not form.
Hmmm. Thinking of which – what will her dad do? I can’t see her back as a mechanic either.
And kudos to Paul for being able to express this with just a few lines.
I can’t put my finger on it. It seems to be something Pablo did to the eyes.. She’s so -for lack of a better word- feminine and, indeed, classy..
i thought it was the hair
its wavy now.
before even when she was full lipped long hair and short skirts it was kinda straight.
this has flow.
Yes. Feminine fits exactly. There is a softness and gentleness that didn’t exist before. And I guess I would add patience and peacefulness as well. One has no need to feel rushed after 80,000 years of contemplation
I think it’s also the way she’s dressed. Or at least that’s consistent.
She doesn’t work at the garage anymore, unless it’s part time.
She’s a personal trainer and a kick-boxing instructor at Punk Yoga. Not picking nits.
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/squeee/
I want to see her re-acquaintance with dad.
Right. I plead senior moment!
However, even kick boxing seems out of place for her now.
And possibly quite dangerous for her students….
Upon seeing the colored boots in your gravatar, I declair that I want a pair of those.
“I declair that I want a pair of those.”
Miss Danzier, are you a southern belle, by any chance?
Shelly’s also going to school now – It’s been 80,000 years since last weeks lecture – I hope she took AWESOMELY good notes in class.
(nods) Hm. Hm. Agreed.
But this new softness and feminism, would Heather even be attracted to that? Maybe it was Shelly’s butch-ness that got her riled up before.
Dunno. While Vickie, who’s an executive type, probably isn’t “soft”, from what i recall from when we saw her, she’s hardly what i’d call “butch”.
I think it was the stubbornness and the punky girl who was still a kid inside…
Agreed! Shelley finally looks comfortable being who she is, a strong, caring, woman. No longer a girl, but self-assured woman. 🙂
Except for her hands. Ugh, reminds me of the Seinfeld episode of “man hands”. Nasty.
Heh heh. Seconded.
Danzier- there is hope for all of us, just more for some than for others.
Given that i’m sixty-three and not really expecting to live all that much longer (nothing in particular, just pessimism), i doubt i’ll have enough time.
63?
really?
you come across as much younger 🙂
and since i suspect people are as old as they seem not their length on this earth – you have plenty of time.
(and you are..just sayin’ not 63 🙂 then again i have not yet once met anyone who seemed to be over 55. barring those who died shortly after meeting them and THEY seemed to be 90+)
Soooo..You “met” them, and they died shortly afterwards??
Do You have ,per chance ,a propensity towards black cloaks, scythes and have a head resembling a dieting victim… 😯
Orrr.. do You get yellow (or pink) post-its with names and times scribbled on them…??
i make a phonecall…
no actually i said it abit wrong. i ment family not random strangers. i can see my family every day but just before they die they seem so old…even if they die randomly (heart attack random not bus crash random) and not from an expected illness.
I’m six months older than Richard Thompson.
Oh – i forgot to mention – i have stood on the bridge that was the scene of the battle that “Red & Gold” is about. It’s not much of a bridge.
Some Pictures.
Well..just my €0.02 😛
Heather’s words echo’s earlier Shelly’s, and now she is in a position to give advice to Heather.
It all comes back around…
Good observation. I have to agree.
80000 years of solitude seems to have changed Shelly into the wise person a sphinx is supposed to be, and the wise person she always was below the noise and bluster.
“it sounds like she’s trying to make Vickie’s decision for her”
I’m not really sure where you’re getting that from. Vickie has made her decision already. Heather has doubts; that’s not the same thing as trying to control Vickie.
I must agree – I don’t see how Heather’s answer can be read that way.
i can see where he is coming from
heather isn’t saying that she doesn’t want to be with vickie.
she is kinda using her anxiousness over vickie wanting to move in together instead of confronting her own issues on the relationship. she should decide on whether she wants to be with vickie for full and tell her that OR decide whether she wants to be with vickie for the here and now..which is what i suspect she does. Either way she is using the fact ‘vickie is being so understanding’ as a cop out. Vickie is NOT perfect. she just wants the relationship more than heather seems to want it.
the classic
“its not you its me” phrase could be used in that break up…
One thing is that we don’t know how long it’s been like that. This still might be something new for Heather to have to face.
In a way it reminds me of Shelly: both wanting something and being afraid of having it.
WonderBra, or other push-up bra. They put the boobs in some really strange places if not adjusted right.
Cases in point…
(Apologies if this gets posted twice – the first time I posted it it didn’t seem to do anything…)
442 for “misplaced boobs“…
Jennie Breeden is also not above doing the occasional boob joke. And ‘supportive undergarment crew’ can be taken at least two ways.
*googles décolletage*
you be just using big words now deliberatly arn’t you 😀
still i get to learn new stuff 🙂
i thought that was torso..or boob area.
I’m not sure where everyone’s getting this “smaller cup size” thing for Heather. Heather has always been stacked!
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/01012003/
i spose we just compare most females to monica.
which isn’t fair really 🙂
It’s always very strange, when two people seem so right for each other….and yet, not quite right. Well, perhaps it isn’t that serious; maybe Heather is just having cold feet, so to speak.
Looks like it, and is explainable too. Apparently Heather has had some unpleasant experiences in relationships, experiences she seemed to blame herself for.
So, yeah, “cold feet” indeed.
It really sucks to learn that your spouse has had cold feet for all the years you’ve been married… 😯
that’s when you punch them for being a coward.
*nods*
If it took you years to learn that your spouse has cold feet, you need to stop sleeping in bunk beds.
I like Shelly with the long hair. It gives her a femininity to offset the muscular physique, without making her too girlie.
I think that Shelly is not just listening, this is leading to something she wants to tell/discuss with Heather, and that her inquiry about her relationship is just an icebreaker. She did call heather, after all, not vice versa.
A lot of peopel are going to be sorely disappointed if it’s just going ot be an apolog for leading Heather on 😀
I it just me or the quality of the art is getting super awesome!
It’s not just you. 😀
+100 😉
First time commenter here. Paul, you are blowing my mind with this storyline. Ever since just before Shelly #1 died, both art and storytelling has been completely astounding. Shelly looking so absolutely beautiful in that last panel today meant I finally had to comment. Amazing job. Now that I’ve gushed I’ll go back to lurking. *cough*
*lassos and passes over muffin*
nope. you have to stay now..
And if she tries to run off, we can always send the squirrels after her.
Not the Squirrels! She’s so young and innocent!
*sobs*
What about this squirrel? (She’s the last character on the page…)
If that was confusing, try here: http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2010-05-17
Are we talking about Scarlet, Jade, and the others from ‘Sequential Art’? Scarlet’s the only one who doesn’t have acrophobia; she’d have to go alone.
That’s STILL one too many….
Excuse me, I think I meant to say ‘agoraphobia’. 🙁
Funny if it turned out I’m actually an old guy…
Wait, didn’t I say I was gonna lurk? Dammit. >.<
You’re not?
The fear of goat hair sweaters?
I’m still wondering about the gorilla suit…whatta bender! 🙂
Free cushion over here…
I think the sun is coming up.
It seems to me Heather is looking at Shelly’s hand (which she may be seeing clearly for the first time) and Shelly is looking at Heather’s cleavage.
Heather being bodacious throughout history:

http://wapsisquare.com/comic/04252005/
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/distractme/
Seriously guys. She has always had boobs!
And this one (http://wapsisquare.com/comic/01302004/) has that Daria vibe that’s mentioned further down, too.
But! Does this mean the end to Officer Justin Case?
(I know that’s not his name, but calling ‘Officer TB’ reminds of tuberculosis.)
Thank you, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one that feel this way about referring to him as Officer TB…
(But I’d given him the last name Time.)
Case is awesome. I didn’t catch it at first, but I love that play on the name.
Trying to help them in any way she can after finally realizing how fragile life it and how short a normal lifespan is.
very, very good point! It would seem logic.
Heather’s had some but not much.
I’m trying to go to bed but I’m in the middle of an archive crawl.
Actually, quite a bit of Heather and Shelly happened after the GGs turned up (including the the bowling ball incident).
I understand.
Actually, Jin waits till Heather gets there, then act like a woman spurned, to the point, as i recall, of hanging on to Shelly’s ankle and getting dragged along the floor as Shelly tries to run after Heather to explain … and then enjoys Shelly’s discomfiture.
I think it’s not long after that that Shelly lights into Jin with an I-can’t-think-of-anyone-who’d-care-if-you-died-type verbal assault, and Jacqui (i think) reads her the riot act about intentionally trying to inflict pain.
about mid-2007. The one immediately prior is also quite hilarious…
I’m going to have to agree with Heather on that one. That’s the sort of trick that could ruin a budding relationship. Not cool.
Shelly has such poise now. She carries herself like she is above and apart. Not in an alienating sense.
But she reminds me of Greek statuary. I still say its an improvement.
Going through the archives around that time, this definitely gives light to recent events:
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/03242004/
That’s one of the things that amaze me about this strip. There is foreshadowing of event YEARS ahead of events. Either Paul is the luckiest writer in the history of the written word, or he is the one of the best.
I vote for the latter.
I was just re-watching the first episode of Babylon 5 – after having been stopped from doing something that would be suicidal, Londo remarks (perhaps a bit bitterly) “It seems I am still on target for my appointment twenty years from now.”
And by the end of the series, he keeps it.
ah yes he does
but the way he keeps it is completely different to how you ‘think’ it will be kept.
the appointment is kept because of friendship and love and not from the hate we first see.
that scene after you have watched the whole series is quite heartbreaking in a good way 🙂
I can’t decide why, but I am getting such a “Daria grown up” vibe off Heather at the moment . . . .
The glasses?
Bingo! Had that in the back of my mind but didn’t remember the character name. Yes, the hair, eyes, glasses and attitude channel Daria very much.
Yes!!! The profile in frame 2 is very Daria-esque! Love me some Daria… la la laaa la la
Daria Morgendorffer. Had to Wiki to find out who she was; I have never seen any of it.
You, good sir, have missed out on some of the most excellent sarcasm applied to animation to date if you have never watched that television show!
You had no idea of the context of my avatar? Oh, my. If you get the chance, do watch some Daria. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but well worth a look.
My own Daria question: what’s her connection to Thessaly in Sandman? There’s a fanfic waiting to happen.
Quick Shelly! Cut Heather’s hair from the neck down. It is the only way she can advance her life to the next stage!
… what?
Ya know – in that last panel, Shelly looks more like CG than CG looks like Shelly, if that makes sense…
it makes sense, at least for me. ^^
i see CG as mirror of shellys inner emotional state and at this moment shelly is near her true “self”, if that makes any sense.. ^^;
As per request, Nudge now has legs ehh..hooves..
Arms are next. Remember, this is just basic muscle lay-out, only skinned part is torso.
wow
cannot think of anything to say so *gives round of applause*
how are you making this btw?
wire and…modling clay?
sorry i seem to recal someone else asking you a similar question but i cannot recall which comment it was on 🙁
Apoxie-Sculpt, coathanger wire, 2 anatomy books, 6 pictures of horse-legs, 2 pictures of goat’s legs and a lot of patience 😆
Ah, I see. Excellent! That should be even more interesting.
Wow, I don’t know how much time you’re putting in on it, but it seems like it’s progressing at a quick pace.
I’m with Paula, I don’t have words for how impressed I am.
Sorry guys (and girls) 🙁
did you see the episode where they made homer simpson 3d?Doesn’t really look like his 2d character 🙂
wouldn’t surprise me if the same happens here 😀
but the previews you’ve given are awesome so the ending result will be awesome also.
no pressure 😛
A little teaser
Arms are not shaped. Look odd. Neck too long. Will be fixed.
While the ‘younger’ Shelly was cute, the ‘older’ Shelly has an air of maturity that is coming across in your art that is very pleasing.
agreed
this has a lovely balance between the ages.
and would also explain why i seem to think she looks more like herself as she was younger than how she was previous to the forest 🙂
the face of this shelly looks (to me) very/really different then the face of previous shelly. her lips are more full and her face has a different shape
Oh, boy – only five or six hours to go!
Think how I feel…I have to leave for work, TEN minutes before it posts….
