I my experience it only works on cats for women, and I’m still not sure it wasn’t a set up job.
My wife after all is the only one I know who has had several cats that accepted verbal commands.
Me- I’m just happy both she and the cat like me.

Hmm
Wether she likes it or not, I think phix is starting to like nudge.
the warning might have been a knee-jerk reaction to someone about to play with fire but it was a warning to someone she doesnt like!
Wonder if the library visitors changed due to Phix leadership of it or the fact that times have just changed. Seems like there may have been more ‘glory hunters’ when nudge was in charge than ‘now’.
What’s so wrong with glory hunters? And why does the library need lethal protection anyway? It’s not like anything can destroy the books. Are the Apo sphinixes so wise they can decern between “true” seekers of knowledge and those bent on nefarious uses of the knowledge? Besides, weren’t they demon killers? Are they expecting an influx of demons into the library?
That warning to Nudge seems a bit like foreshadowing to me.
Its more about destroying the world then destroying books. Imagine if some pompeous asshole walzes in and searches all that stuff on Lantian WMDs (like a chimera Recipe) for some stupid bullshit like creating a master-race or forcing some Fundamentalistic worldview on everyone.
Heck having the Frontdoor connected to the US makes it rather difficult to keep nutjobs and militant fundies out.
Right, since there are no nutjobs or militants anywhere but the US.
Besides, how will the Apos know who is going to use the information for evil purposes and who is not? If they are worried about that, they should keep certain information away from everyone, period. It should not even be in book form for anyone to see. Not that it will matter in the end. What has been discovered once can, and will be done again. The Library and all it’s safeguards notwithstanding.
An apotropaic sphinx is one who wards off evil. innit? It would seem counter-intuitive for the apos to be the bad guys. I’d like to see one, though, just to see what they look like.
Well it depends on how the define evil and some people can be wierd about that. We just dont know what the Apos values are and being sphinxes these values could be very cryptic and alien.
Indeed. If they are sticking to the basics, don’t hit and don’t steal, it’s not really much of a problem as those are universal. If their rules go much beyond that, then you start running afoul of variable codes of right and wrong, which leads to a question of who’s code is more valid.
Just offhand, I would say the code belonging to the person who will kill and eat you should you get it wrong would seem to be more valid, at least in a practical sense …
Yep, They’re gonna get along just fine and dandy,
I’m with you–they are doing just fine. If Phix were too nice to Nudge, she might not appreciate it enough, or know what to do.
Most likely she would think Phix is up to something and would start planning countermeasures. It’s best this way.
Phix! You apologise!
(Brandishes Very Large rolled-up newspaper…)
Heh. Better you than me [looks at size of Phix’s claws…]
Has that ever worked on a cat? or a woman for that matter???
Certainly hasn’t worked on me yet! 🙂
It all depends on how you apply the newspaper. More than that I will not say.
I my experience it only works on cats for women, and I’m still not sure it wasn’t a set up job.
My wife after all is the only one I know who has had several cats that accepted verbal commands.

*burns newspaper*
*brandishes 18th century printing press*
grin*
heh. no need for apologies, phix knows what she is doing..:)
just the way you would treat a naughty child..
“aww why cant I have the matches???”
“they are dangerous” you strike a match, and then hold it close enough for them to feel the heat, to typical shock..
you answer that ‘frightened look’ with “and go play with traffic” so they know you are not going to ‘treat them like a stupid kid’.. 🙂
Actually, Nudge sort of grows on you! She’s bright eyed and (literally) bushy tailed and ready for her new life!
I am starting to like Nudge. Reminds me of my ex.

not the bestest lighting ever in panel four. still like both of these characters a ton 🙂

Heh… Nudge is definitely growing on me…

I still haven’t worked out just what it is the Library is intended to do, or for whom. I look forward to discovering more.
Apo’s… I think we’ve found our “villians” here.
An apotropaic sphinx is one who wards off evil. innit? It would seem counter-intuitive for the apos to be the bad guys. I’d like to see one, though, just to see what they look like.
Probably, a lot like Phix…
But with cooler clothes.
Shiny black plastic raincoats and high dollar sunglasses?
Nah – long leather belted trenchcoats and snap-brim fedoras.
Haven’t you ever watched WW2 movies with the Gestapo?

Fatuncle, you made me chortle into my glass of milk. Glad the spill missed the keyboard 🙂
To quote (more or less) Leonard Wibberley’s original novel of The Mouse that Roared: A NovelThe Mouse That Roared:
love these girls.
Oh, Cool … reverse psychology! Alright!
Oh, wait. Nudge isn’t buying it … dang.
Phix is trying so hard not to choke the life out of Nudge.
Is it possible to kill Nudge?
Since Nudge is now back to being a Librarian, I don’t think anything could harm her while she’s in the Library.
Any official librarian, while in the library can not be harmed/killed.
Ah. I notice you didn’t include “hurt” – as in “intense pain” – in your list of “can’t be”s…
Doesn’t mean Phix wouldn’t enjoy trying.
As the running theme in “Aladdin return of Jafar”
“You’d be amazed what you can live through.”
Maybe that’s why Phix added the rider about playing in traffic…
Along those lines
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/trickster/
I don’t know about you guys, but I’d worry about the safety of the drivers if Nudge decided to play in traffic. 🙂
I don’t know.
“Oh! A goat in the road! 100 points if you can hit it!”
“But it’s standing on 2 legs.”
“So it can do tricks. Go for it!”
My insurance only covers damage inflicted by dancing moose.
What about flying squirrel?
“Vat about Moose & Squirrel?”
Ugh. That’d be the worst crossover ever.
“Dahling, ve haff problem getting in library.”
“Vat? Ve haff to get past Sphinx and Faun.”
Hey! when someone told Steve Winwood to go play in Traffic, it was the making of his career!
Actually, I think Phix is just yanking Nudge’s tail.
And the Apo’s are probably looking to weed out the egoists from the altruists.
Who just so happen to have a room full of human skulls.
What? You’d just throw them all away?
Hey, playing in Traffic never did Steve Winwood any harm.
Yeah – but it was the end for poor John Barleycorn…
Re: Traffic – *grooooooannannannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn*
*seconds that groan*
Yep, called it. Total sibling relationship… This’ll be amazing to watch seethe and feste— uh, I mean, grow and bloom!!! Totally!
Now… about that beach?
How many visitors does the Bibliothiki get, anyway?
You know, I do like Nudge, but I keep getting distracted by her horns not being able to decide which direction they curl in.
Ok i am wrong and perverted if i think Phinx is sexy.
So… Nudge is Oscar and Phix is Felix in this little Odd Couple Sub-Plot? 🙂
