Major scales are universal but the concept of Middle C as the fulcrum about which other notes orbit is distinctly Western European. As a pure tone it wouldn’t have any greater significance to Egyptian or Mesoamerican cultures than any other pure tone.

Just remember: the definitions of the notes having specific frequencies is relatively recent. We had written music before we agreed as to what frequency the notes are. They were similar, but could be substantially different depending on the composer, the conductor, the musician, the instrument maker, &c.; like 440 v 400 Hz for an A above middle C.

I’m thinking that, with string instruments it’s not so critical–they can be tuned a long way up or down. It’s the wind instruments that have more fixed frequencies, depending on their construction.
