A member of Calista’s family I take it.

(slaps forehead) I completely missed that the first several times through, those tendrils look a lot like Castila’s thorny vines when she goes to pieces or gets aggressive.

… except we were told Calista is unique; an experiment to make sentient thorn bushes mobile. I wonder who or what this “Foxglove” is. I bet she has an interesting story…

But yeah, related in some way, clearly.

Actually, isn’t “Queen Foxglove” the name of Cricket’s mother? She already mentioned that her parents & their soldiers helped rescue Pickle initially… and this little dark-show might explain why Stinkweed had the initial “Fae are mean and scary and kill people” reaction upon meeting Cricket the first time?

Problem with humans is that when you do something like this you just ‘prove” their paranoia. We’re stupid.

One could get the idea Foxglove grooves on killing and beheading.

What’s disturbing is law-enforcement personnel judged and executed. No trial, no judge, no court order, no nothing. Foxglove is presumably royalty, but she’s not our royalty.

It’s also entirely possible that Foxglove is literally older than our justice system, and therefore has no reason to respect an institution that humans mostly just use to oppress each other. Additionally, these responsible parties were already stated to be super rich, which makes them pretty much immune to said justice system that she doesn’t respect.

Do we know they are actually real law enforcement personnel and not some mercenaries? They never identified themselves. They were obviously there to assassinate someone in cold blood, not to serve a legal warrant or take someone into custody. A home invasion in which a child was endangered. Since they are cartoon villains, and not real people, they deserved what they got. Last time I checked, law enforcement personnel don’t put silencers on their weapons.

Gotta agree here. If they were policing their own, that would be one thing. Still iffy, mind, but when you have Sphinxes casually killing each other and sharing then with grandma, that level of enforcement may be justified.

But this wasn’t – this was Paras killing mundanes in retaliation.

      • PlutoniumBoss
        May 31, 2016, 11:57 am | #

This wasn’t (completely) a retaliation. This was primarily the most efficient way of ending what was turning out to be an ongoing program of violence and murder against Paras. Any other more “ethical” way of handling this would result in more deaths of Paras, of secret organization henchmen, of the Paras trying to protect other Paras from the secret organization, et cetera.

You are viewing this as a police vs criminals situation. Look at it more as two sovereign nations that share a treaty not to attack each other. The people Foxglove beheaded violated the heck out of that treaty and risked ignition of a war nobody really wants. Think what the response of a superpower nation would have if another nation were caught creating a weapon targeted specifically at said superpower. I’d say beheading the leaders would count as a mild reaction at best.

That wasn’t law enforcement being executed just now. It was the super-rich members of the “shadow government” who directed their soldiers to kill and kidnap. Think of it as no-nonsense Avengers type organization chopping off the heads of the leaders of Hydra. And if they grow back, they’ll just chop a few more off. They’re good at chopping. And since the Senate has received these packages before, we can assume they have some sort of treaty rules and system for finding out what these people did to be executed.

There’s no need for a trial when you are 100% certain of someone’s guilt Advantages of scrying magic.

Cassi is a special agent, which is FBI. I get the impression they’re all from the same agency.

        May 31, 2016, 5:12 am | #

I would more say MIB, rather than mundane FBI. The Bureau’s “Clowns in the Basement” would be all over the Paras if they were in the same agency.

      • BarerMender
        May 31, 2016, 5:19 am | #

On the other hand, Cassi spoke of how paras join the police to protect humans.

        May 31, 2016, 5:44 am | #

Like Shelly’s Justin (presumably). Jouning the mundane policy /as a secret Para/ is one thing. These folks ain’t Police.

Law Enforcement Officers, yes, but at a rather different level than investigating Bud’s sonic booms.

    Multiple things.
    1) Foxglove’s got some serious juice if she’s killing, beheading, and delivering all remotely.
    2) The beheading is clearly a separate step, so how is she killing?
    3) “This time”.

It’s good to be reminded that not all Paras, even those on the light side of the force are the lovable goofballs we usually end up with.

Thinking on it, we are _seriously_ over populated with dorks and goofballs, actually. Even among the tiny majority of Mundanes.

Why do humans think we want to kill them ? Now go execute a bunch of humans ? So when do we see human monster hunters? I always thought the para’s were hiding from mundanes. This makes it sound like they enslaved them.

I’m going to go with the thought that there is a deal between the humans and paras, and these chucklefucks violated the deal by going after the Blackthorn. The executions of the guilty parties is part of the deal, and plopping them on the Senate floor is a reminder to police themselves.

      • Akeche
        May 31, 2016, 2:50 pm | #

This just makes me wonder when the humans will step up and have a way to block such retaliation. Deal or no deal, it seems like an incredibly one-sided deal if there are creatures that can do THAT by only thinking about it.

        May 31, 2016, 3:35 pm | #

Akache: need we remind you, that it was the hyu-mons who attacked and provoked first?

        July 19, 2018, 9:59 am | #

Doesn’t feel like much of a fair deal, if you ask me. Paras could very easily drive humanity to extinction if they so wished, but the moment humans try to develop something to even the playing field a bunch of people get beheaded without trial and their heads plopped in a public center of government “Godfather” style.

After hearing so many stories of humans getting butchered by rampaging paras in the past (the sphinxes come to mind) I don’t know if you could call their “paranoia” unjustified.j

It’s actually very simple – “you assholes wanted the treaty, stop violating it.”

      • JuankiMan

Not much of a treaty when only one side has the means to enforce it.

The paras probably look at this like animal control, mad dogs are put down. The humans need to learn to keep their lunatics in check or someone else will.

The humans likely wanted a way to keep the para’s lunatics in check in case they don’t, but that apparently is a no-no.

Quel disappointment. No visuals of the beheadings. For such a heinous act, the ‘Death Wish’ method is quite apt. As my ancestors would say “Some people just need killing.”

Don’t forget people… this all happened about 13-15 YEARS AGO!!! and thinking about Phix’s ass-chewing of Monica and Shelley, to me anyways, it implies that the human Powers-That-Be haven’t QUITE forgotten about this incident and that’s why Phix was so vehement about them not flaunting their powers in public… it could set off another round of this… if it hasn’t ALREADY done so… and we, the readers are just now catching up to it.
