She probably has a handprint burned into her PJ bottoms now too that Alan may find curious.

        March 1, 2011, 3:14 am | #

I hope that Alan has learned, by now, to let such curiosities go without mentioning them.

Oh yeah. he knows what Jin really is, but he doesn’t care.

I’ll have to look, but I don’t think he actually knows the whole story, just that Jin has some abandonment issues (obviously!), and he has stated that what ever has happened in the past, he is in it for the long haul…i.e., I don’t think he knows she’s an immortal being…

He has personally witnessed her trying to cut her wrist with a high-end kitchen knife, and producing a seriously bent and twisted high-end kitchen knife. She also talks candidly in bed about how she’s nothing but a haunted empty shell. He knows.

        Maybe, maybe not.
Not only is he “in on the loop,” he could also take notice on the angle & positioning of the scorched handprint & rightly guess that it’s self-inflicted.

        But yeah…Warm butt. LOL

      My first thoughts, too.
But I don’t see Jin as the marryin’ kind. Outside of Shelly, she’s got the biggest abandonment issues. How’s she going to deal with him getting old and dying?
Or a puppy, maybe he’s bringing her a puppy.

I always wondered about giving a pet for therapeutic reasons to an immortal. Sure, pet gives unconditional love, but will ALWAYS die, being mortal, thus creating more abandonment issues down the line, yes/no?

      • Fairportfan
        March 1, 2011, 3:37 pm | #

        Mortals outlive their pets, too.

        As i’ve said before:

They give us so much, and ask so little in return…

…just a little piece of your soul.

      • SoWhyMe
        March 1, 2011, 10:01 pm | #

Not so far fetched. Pardon me if I’ve mentioned this before, I don’t remember. There is a theory that animals don’t have individual souls, but rather a tiny portion of a collective soul upon creation and give it back to the whole at death. Pets, however, are slightly different in that they also get a tiny piece of a human soul from their owner. It is this which keeps them separate from the animal collective soul, and allows them to follow us wherever we go in the next life.

I hope they don’t get married. That always screws up the dynamic in stories, especially one like this. Not to mention the fact that, when the author finally realizes this later on, he/she tends to kill off one of them. In this case it would most likely be adios for Alan. Think about how many TV shows went belly up not long after the main characters finally married.

Of course, some will do it to introduce tragic pathos into the story by having the non-main character of the pair die in some unexpected way shortly after, or just before the wedding. Sometimes on the wedding day.

I now remember one scene from a horde of (gratefully forgotten) sitcoms from the 80’s: a young man pulling his jeans out of the microwave, slipping them on, and sighing “Ah, warm buns!”
And who knows what useful memory was replaced with THAT one.

      • Jay-Em
        March 1, 2011, 2:40 am | #

meh..modern microwaves seem not to care. I once warmed a Noodle-box, metal handle and all (ooops) nothing happened. Noodles got nice ‘n warm.., metal handle even hotter.

The tiny logo, stamped on rivets would leave nice burnmarks though..

      • TheSkulker
        March 1, 2011, 3:18 am | #

Actually, I think that metal rivets in a microwave is exactly what NOTDilbert was thinking!

      • Me
        March 1, 2011, 3:22 am | #

So long as the metal doesn’t touch the sides, top, or bottom of the microwave, no problem (except the very efficient heating of the metal). If they do touch, you get a very nifty lightning-bolt effect and can throw that microwave away.

      • Fairportfan
        March 1, 2011, 4:25 am | #

Not in my experience. A friend had just gorren her first microwave (many years ago) and was going to warm up some sort of snack for us, and out in a plate with real gold leaf trim.

Well, it had gold leaf trim.

        Before.

A CD in a microwave can be interesting, too.

        Briefly.

      • txmystic
        March 1, 2011, 6:19 am | #

Fairportfan is correct…ANY metal , no matter how small, will create arcs in a microwave. I had no idea one morning that the refridgerated peanut butter still had a tiny amount of the foil seal still attached to the jar until…

      • bmonk
        March 1, 2011, 12:00 pm | #

IIRC, it’s the sharp edges of the metal that cause the most problem. A rivet, with nice round edges, should be OK. But very hot.

iliad, good video. It reminded me of the Flaming Strawberry PopTarts (SPT) experiment, with the classic line, “At this point, the researchers also realized that the heat could inadvertently melt the adhesive cellophane and cause the flaming SPTs to suddenly eject from the toaster. Unfortunately, this did not occur.” (just below Figure 4).

Also do not put a potato in the microwave for an hour. It starts on fire and then your popcorn never looses that burned flavor. 😀

If Alan freaked out over the knife thing, he’d really freak if he found her sitting in the fireplace. At least for a moment or two. He’s gotten fairly casual about things. As I recall the only thing he said about her fire breath was not to set the curtains on fire (again?).

Ive heard of Chilli powder ala ‘chocolat’ in hot chocolate but never really tried it myself as the generic powdered hot chocolate tastes so powdery and stuff.

You can buy complete mixes – Dagoba makes a lovely one, available at health stores and possibly online. I can’t afford it regularly, so I invented my own home version that works very well. I pour the amount of milk I need to fill my mug into a small saucepan, then add a healthy couple shakes of cinnamon and then a shake of chili powder – one does it for me, but use more if you like extra heat. I use either Silk light soy or almond milk due to an allergy, but it works with whatever milk you like. Over a low flame it heats gently, stirring constantly. When the vapors start rising – before it simmers – turn off the heat, whisk in 2 tablespoons of a good unsweetened cocoa – I use Hershey’s Special Dark, but use what you have or can get. I use a couple packets of Stevia to keep the calories down, or you can use sugar. Mini marshmallows are strictly optional, but yummy! Enjoy!!! 😉
