My honest critique would probably be deemed a personal attack, even though I would only be commenting on the work, and not the person. Things can be a bit too politically correct here sometimes, as I’ve found by having other posts of mine deleted.
I guess the only thing I can say without fear of reprisal would be concerning the shoe color. They should be black, white, or a general match to her hair color. Unless Monica is seriously color blind, I doubt she would choose yellow shoes for that outfit.
Actually, I did give an honest critique. I think she looks even cuter in color than in black and white. If you’re referencing the coloring job, I’d like to redirect you to a comment jwhouk made yesterday about his coloring skills. There’s no point in saying to him what he already knows (though I sure as heck couldn’t do better).
Regarding the color choice for the shoes…it’s a generally known fashion fact that when wearing outfits that are predominantly neutral, an accessory (including shoes) in a bright color is not only acceptable, but encouraged. While yellow is not the first color I’d choose for myself, it’s perfectly appropriate for someone with warm skintones who is frequently called “Sunshine.”
You shouldn’t assume that people who aren’t abrasive or negative in their commentary aren’t being honest. Or, perhaps more accurately, you shouldn’t assume that opinions that don’t match your own must be happy rose-colored lies.
Julie — explaining why something fails, and what to do to fix it, is constructive criticism. Doing it without personal attack, snideness, snark, callousness or cruelty ought, IMO, to be acceptable constructive criticism.
Doing so in the form of a compliment sandwich is really good constructive criticism.
“Who are you and what did you do with [insert descriptive phrase about the person you’re talking to (i.e. my roommate, the man I married, etc.)]?”
At least, that’s how I’ve usually heard the line. 🙂 I’m pretty sure Amanda has called Monica the dork or a dork before, so that would be an appropriate descriptive title or phrase to use in the joke.
It’s odd, the more I see her with this hair cut, the less I think it looks good. Not saying she can’t look good with short hair, just don’t think this is her cut per se.
i usually don’t mind short hair but with M’s … curvy features, it sorta makes her look like a snake with an eating problem. =O=O=O Less goofy version being, i feel it takes away from the aesthetic flow of her form.
Well, the true test for her will be what Kevin thinks. Smart guy will say he likes it, regardless. I am still undecided. It is a huge change to take in at once. I have a personal preference for long hair, but it is *her* head and *her* hair, and I just hope she still likes it after she has slept on it. And nothing is preventing her from growing it out again.
She had short hair 9 years ago when the comic first started…and think this style is very mature and grown up in comparison. Besides, she can always grow it, ten years is a long time to not have a hair cut in anyone’s standards
Thanks for answering my question yesterday. If I miss something, please point it out. Jwhouk didn’t mind, either.
I realize some people just don’t like pixie cuts, but I suspect for some others, it’s just not what they were used to. They like Monica, so they are afraid of any changes.
Sassy is probably not a strong enough word to describe some of my friends. 🙂
You know, I understand being afraid of change, but I don’t get making a fuss over it once it’s happened and you can’t make it go back. Maybe I’m just a bit too practical to be empathetic in this situation.
Of course, Paul could change Monica’s hair back by either force growing it over the next few months, or putting her in a wig, but that’s his decision as an artist…even if he does accept input from fans. (I hope he doesn’t…I like the change.)
I wonder if the haircut is partially a reflection of a little change of personality. After the white chocolate mocha, she seemed to be more open to adventure. Who knows, she might even start exercising a little! Of course, there was the Locks of Love thing, too.
I’m not looking for dirt. Just that I saw it before at the top of the comments page. It’s been gone for a couple days now and I just wondered what happened. I thought all those negative postings about LoL may have had an influence. It’s not there right now, for even. I did not realize it was on the home/blog page since I usually come right here to the comments page.
*Squeeeeeee!!* How adorable is Monica? And I LOVE the approving yet smartass reaction from Amanda. Thank you for bringing Amanda back into the flow – I love her and the way she and Monica play off of each other.
If I could do animation, I’d make a version of the old Wonderful World of Disney transisiton with Tinkerbell, except with Monica flittering about. Just to see how areodynamic her figure looks in flight.
Time for a reality check http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/80433325/
If you are still fixating on loving or hating M’s hair after that. Than I have some really bad news for the whole human race.
And on Monica, that would be major surgery. In fact, she’d probably have to have the other side reduced or removed so she wouldn’t have even more balance problems…
I’m sure the Amazons could find clerical work for their more “gifted” members. That or be a wet nurse (a concept that has always nauseated me). From what I understand of the myths, they did not, in general, breed themselves, but instead elected to kidnap female children to raise as their own.
For some reason, I find it interesting that Mon was so goofily (?) excited in showing her new ‘do to Bud & Brandi, but almost embarassed to show Amanda. More concern over what her oldest friend would think, I guess.
Meh.. I’m not really a girly-girl, myself, but I know plenty of women who get something done (like significant hairstyle change) and they want to show the world, so a week of “zomg new haircut” comics is not unexpected, especially considering how big of a change it is for her and all those who know her with long hair. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if a month or three from now she runs into someone she hasn’t seen in a while and they comment on her lack of hair.
Secondly, the “look at my hair cut” comics are there for a good cause; Paul’s linking to the “Locks of Love” Charity (check his blog). Get a haircut (6 inches or more) and donate the hair to wigs for cancer patients! I donated about 12″ last year and another 8″ this year. (Yeah.. I only get my hair cut about once a year, if I’m lucky. :3 ) Funny thing is, I can get 12″ cut off and no one even notices.
How can you follow a line like that? 😉
I cut her. I cut her bad!
Heheheh .
KAAA-ZzzinnngggGG!!!
Okay, she looks adorable in that second “panel”.
So adorable I had to do this.
Bravo.
Very nice!!
Awww…I’m glad you did do that. She really is adorable.
Excellent work!
It looks nice, and not to take anything away from what you did, but I kinda feel like we ought to give Paul some credit.
Good job Paul! And jwhouk, too! 🙂
You guys are not into honest critiques, are you?
…and your “honest critique” would include … ?
My honest critique would probably be deemed a personal attack, even though I would only be commenting on the work, and not the person. Things can be a bit too politically correct here sometimes, as I’ve found by having other posts of mine deleted.

I wouldn’t expect Monica to choose yellow shoes at all.
Actually, I did give an honest critique. I think she looks even cuter in color than in black and white. Ya what is there to say after that? how does losing ALL your hair make you less of a Dork… This isn’t Like Shelley’s hair as a sign of progress
It’s an old joke, you know …
Huh? How does it go?
I assumed that she just meant that the pixie cut was not dorky, but it wouldn’t be her style to say anything that positive.
“Who are you and what did you do with [insert descriptive phrase about the person you’re talking to (i.e. my roommate, the man I married, etc.)]?”

I feel you, at first I loved it but then yesterday’s side view was a resounding meh, and now I’m kinda on the fence…
i usually don’t mind short hair but with M’s … curvy features, it sorta makes her look like a snake with an eating problem. =O=O=O Less goofy version being, i feel it takes away from the aesthetic flow of her form.
I think that was just a weird pose. If she had been standing up straight it would have looked fine, I think.
Maybe it’d be better if the bangs weren’t so long? I can’t put my finger on it, but it just doesn’t work for me somehow.
I’m trying and trying, but I can’t get myself to like her hair. It’s really not her at all – it makes her head look like a golf ball on a tee.
I’m lovin’ Monica and Amanda’s looks today .
Superb!
Cute avatar…but then you already know that….
🙂
Yep. Still not liking the new hair.
Well, the true test for her will be what Kevin thinks. Smart guy will say he likes it, regardless. I am still undecided. It is a huge change to take in at once. She haz vays huf deeeling vith him.

Monica’s haircut is so cute it makes me want to get my hair cut that short. I LOVE IT!
hmm i like her short hair but i like it more when it looks well more wild/pixi like
Ah, the comfort and acceptance of friends…
Of course she’s “accepting.” One dunk in the lake is enough to convince her to go along with anything Monica likes.
Nice Hassy, Amanda!
For those of you who don’t like Monica”s hair cut short: Monica likes it.
Poor Bud. Must be hell to be female, unhappy with your body image, and unable to do anything about it — possibly forever.
Wouldn’t necessarily have to be female for that.
Oh come on guys! 🙂 You don’t need to say how much you don’t like her hair STILL on every page she’s on, do you? 😉
You know, from my friends, what Amanda said would be considered pretty high praise. Well done, Mon! Way to squeeze a compliment like that out of her!
You got some sassy friends. 🙂
Thanks for answering my question yesterday. If I miss something, please point it out. Jwhouk didn’t mind, either.

Speaking of LoL, what happened to that? I thought Paul was going to promote it all week?
@SoWhyMe – LoL is still in my blog, just below the comic. Quit looking for dirt.
I’m not looking for dirt. Just that I saw it before at the top of the comments page. It’s been gone for a couple days now and I just wondered what happened. In fact, now that I look, it’s still at the top of Monday’s comments page.
*Squeeeeeee!!* How adorable is Monica? And I LOVE the approving yet smartass reaction from Amanda. Thank you for bringing Amanda back into the flow – I love her and the way she and Monica play off of each other.
You know, Monica, Katherine has yet to see your knew look. Why do you not poit on over there, and show her?
She really does look cute in the new “do”.
If I could do animation, I’d make a version of the old Wonderful World of Disney transisiton with Tinkerbell, except with Monica flittering about. Just to see how areodynamic her figure looks in flight.
“Aerodynamics has never been a big concern of mine.”
Time for a reality check http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/80433325/
If you are still fixating on loving or hating M’s hair after that. Than I have some really bad news for the whole human race.
I see that she’s wearing a wrist guard. It almost looks like she would need another type of guard, if she tried sighting down the arrow, at least,
Yeah…reminds me of the tales of Amazonian women who did a little surgical procedure on themselves in order to not have issues when using a bow…
And on Monica, that would be major surgery. In fact, she’d probably have to have the other side reduced or removed so she wouldn’t have even more balance problems…
…or just resign herself to a permanent five-degree list to port.
I’m sure the Amazons could find clerical work for their more “gifted” members. That or be a wet nurse (a concept that has always nauseated me). From what I understand of the myths, they did not, in general, breed themselves, but instead elected to kidnap female children to raise as their own.
Well, when you have to scroll down before you can see anything below the neck, that’s not a fair test.
Back on the topic of hair, I loved Monica’s long hair. I really, really did. I also love Monica’s pixie hair. I really, really do.
That is all.
Too cute! Makes me want to get my hair pixied again, and I am trying to grow it out! *sigh* decisions, decisions.
For some reason, I find it interesting that Mon was so goofily (?) excited in showing her new ‘do to Bud & Brandi, but almost embarassed to show Amanda. More concern over what her oldest friend would think, I guess.
I dunno. You could read her expression and body language as “Boy, it this gonna weird her out!”, too.
I’d be pissed about all the look at my hair cut comics if she wasn’t so cute.
Meh.. I’m not really a girly-girl, myself, but I know plenty of women who get something done (like significant hairstyle change) and they want to show the world, so a week of “zomg new haircut” comics is not unexpected, especially considering how big of a change it is for her and all those who know her with long hair. Amanda’s got good taste in cameras. Not often I see one of mine in a comic 😀 Thanks!
Mamiya? for some reason thats what my brain said first.
And now I’ve broken down and gotten one of those avatar thingies. yay me. if it worked.
Ahh, just what the dork-ter ordered!
