Eeewwww! Politics was always creepy to me – after all, who spends a friggin’ fortune to get a temporary job that doesn’t pay very well… now I have to imagine this whole bread and circuses crap not happening simply yearly for the past couple centuries but infinitely looping – brrrryuck!
It isn’t the salary that makes holding high offices so lucrative (though I’ve never heard of city counselors and up making less than six figures either) it’s the business deals the position and authority allows you to conduct with your new influence.
Here in the USA the big money is made after you retire from the office. Both speaking fees and what corporations are willing to pay in exchange for your knowledge of the system and you contacts, any job high enough in government will allow you to become at least a millionaire.

“doesn’t pay very well”? You must be infinitely naive in order to entertain such a notion for even a split second.
It depends on the country and what you consider a reasonable return.
And, whether the actual pay is considered, or the perqs, bribes, later pay for connections, etc.
The return is not in money, it’s power.
