Those speeches in the last panel buffaloed me. I had to do some research. If anyone else is as un-hip as me, here are the bare bones: Team Fortress 2 is a game, evidently some kind of war game. Heavy is a character from the game who happens to be Russian, thus the Russian farewell, “do svidaniya”. I learned how to say it from my second wife, whose first language was Russian, but I’d never seen it written down, so I even had to look that up. I always assumed it was something like “das vidanya.”

I suppose you could call a team-based multiplayer “capture the flag” shooter a “war game” as a shorthand. But that’s not what I was going to say. Even if you never play the game, you owe yourself to watch some of the “Meet the…” videos on YouTube. I recommend Meet the Medic” highly, although “Meet the Spy” and Meet the Pyro” are also quite good. (Didn’t include links for the last two, because multiple weblinks tend to trigger spam filters.) Also, “Expiration Date” is very fun.

Meet the Medic was plenty for me, thanks. I assumed war game because a character was firing a minigun off-hand. (According to some discussion board, that weapon weighs 330 lbs. I used to pick up a pressure washer that weighed 330 lbs. and put in in the truck, and believe me, no one is running or jumping while carrying that much weight. I wouldn’t attempt to pick up either foot.)

Just saying “minigun” doesn’t really tell you anything about it as they come in many different sizes.

The GAU-8 is a 30mm gatling type rotary canon, often referd to as a minigun. It weighs 619.5 lb and is 112.28 inches long. This no one is going to shoot one handed.

The M134 Minigun (yes that’s it’s name) is a 7.62x51mm NATO rotary machine gun. This gun comes in a light weight version that weigh in at 41 lb. This I wouldn’t want to try firing one handed, but it’s not entirely impossible that someone could at least hold it one handed.

So, just because it’s a gatling style weapon doesn’t mean it’s going to weigh 300 lb…

“That weapon.” I said “that weapon.” Here’s the quote from the site:

“Let me contribute to your statement. The Heavy Weapons Guy himself States exactly what he fires. “Sasha” is a 150 kilograms and fires custom 2 rounds at 10,000 rounds per minute.”

150 KG is 330 lbs. The site is: https://www.reddit.com/r/GameTheorists/comments/36ni0k/would_it_even_be_possible_to_use_a_minigun/

Plus the weight of the ammunition. The terribly expensive ammunition.

It’s not a war game. It’s a war themed hat simulator!
I’ve been playing it since 2007.

I don’t think that’s Mrs. Adler. Too short, too jolly.

I wonder whether the feathered wings are mandatory. Atsali’s got a set of bat wings, too.
    (A different division, perhaps?)

I also wonder whether ‘sali can change wing profile during flight.

F-111. That takes me back. I was a fire-control mechanic on those birds
        back in the sixties.

Feathered raptor-style wings {sirens are marine raptors} are built for speed. gliding capability and control, for snatching prey.

Bat wings are designed for bursts of speed and extreme maneuverability, for grabbing insects and eating them mid-air.

      Different wings for different purposes.

Say what? It’s a Spanish word. My pronunciation os probably slightly anglicized, but not by much.

Except that i believe the Spanish/Mexican pronunciation is more like TA-mall-ay

How about that? Wikipedia says it’s tamal in Spanish.

Except it shouldn’t rhyme. Every single “a” in Spanish is pronounced like the “a” in apple.
        Source: I’m Spanish 🙂

        May 5, 2016, 4:37 pm | #

Huh. I thought all the As were pronounced like the A in “father.” I still remember the waiter in Puerto Rico schooling me on how to say “coca-Cola”. No apples.

      • Nobody
        May 6, 2016, 1:42 am | #

Well, I’m no expert in phonetics and it’s true that the As are usually longer than in “apple”. “Father” may be a better example. In any case, I’ve looked around a bit and the Spanish A corresponds with the A in the IPA phonetic alphabet.

        May 6, 2016, 5:51 am | #

Yes, but in the rest of the English-speaking world the vowel sound in “golly” is nothing like an “A” of any length.

        May 6, 2016, 9:42 am | #

@maarvarq if you’re replying to me, I never said golly had an “A” sound. I was just commenting on how to pronounce words in Spanish. If I’m not mistaken “golly” has an “O” similar to “dolly”.

I’m wondering about the white spots on the uniforms. Are those reflection spots? Does Norway have two suns? Or are those printed on the fabric?

Not twin suns, but simply to indicate ‘shiny-ness’, like PVC or Vinyl
