It’s a good bet Digit will just love lobster, shrimp, and crab.
And if she can eat them in the traditional spider manner she can make a little on the side selling fully intact shells for display.
@Sheik: Actually jumping spiders chew their food. While some spiders, like crab spiders, suck innards their preys innards through a tiny hole made using their fangs, jumping spiders typically masticate their prey’s body with their fangs and the plates located at the base of the pedipalps. They still have to digest their prey externally and drink the soup, but all that’s left of the prey are usually some random bits like a few compound lenses and hairs. Hopefully Digit can use her new abilities to just eat the cricket outright so she doesn’t have to hawk digestive lugis on it and then drink it.
There’s nothing STILL about it. With the environmental impact of keeping large herds of cattle and the like becoming untenable, we’ll need to look for alternative sources SOON. Compared to a cow, that has a conversion ratio of about 6 lbs consumed, to every 1 lbs meat produced – that cricket in her hand has a ratio of 1.1 to 1. So better get used to the idea of eating insects, a generation or two from now it’ll likely be completely normal.
Corryn,
I’m truly beginning to like you.
I have to tell you, I am addicted to learning new things.
My mom took me to a mentoring program on a military post (at nine years old) to take an I.Q. test.
After getting the results, she bought a bookcase-full of five sets of encyclopedias.
I had them read before I turned 14.
Yeah but her pedipalps, the head things, fall into the same sort of category as ears or antennae. The’re not limbs. But she’s still an arachnid. You wouldn’t call an ordinary spider an insect if it lost two legs in an accident.
Well she’s somewhere in between a four limbed creature and an eight limbed one. (4+8)/2=6. Ergo she has 6. Although, I suspect she can produce yet another set of arms should the need arise.
I’m suspecting that as she practices and exercises her transformation abilities she will be able to take on a rather wide range of forms. Previously, folks suggested she might be a Drider before we saw her initial transform … that may still be an option. Now or eventually.
Eventually, she may be able to achieve a form that is identical or near-identical to a 5 or 8 foot spider.
I’ve been thinking throughout this arc that some careful investigation needs to go into her dental configuration. Her bite may be poisonous, intentionally or accidentally, in many/most of her forms. In fact, that might be one of the very first “fine-tune” aspects she might want to practice …. configuring her bite so no accidents occur, as well as enabling that ability while still appearing human. It could be one of her most reliable defenses in situations where she can’t afford to be seen as anything other than human.
@datora: I like the cut of your jib! It all depends on the extent of her ability to manipulate her morphegenic field (reference to Discworld books). What I want to know is if she can move things around to positions that no human or juming spider should have. Her spinerettes for example. Jumping spiders can only make webs from their butts, but some spiders have fangs that shoot silk. If Digit could mimic that…
Generally spiders have low metabolic rates because they are ectothermic, like reptiles. Both groups use the enviroment to regulate temperature, so they don’t spend valuable calories on heating themselves. However, jumping spiders are more active hunters than most. In her original form I’d say she would need two large meals a week. However, now that she’s part mammal she may eat on a more human schedule.
But wouldn’t Digit be more comfortable drinking protein shakes and smoothies?
Since she is a spider, her digestive system is better adapted toward a liquid diet…
I’m betting Digit is now large enough that she will need more than one big, black cricket.
I wonder if she’d like pizza…
This is such a terrible transformation! She can eat aphids all day and never feel full!
What kind of a monster you think she is? Of course she likes pizza!
Aphid pizza, with a side of dried cricket
There’s always locusts. Even humans can fill up on those.
I don’t think the FDA let’s that be a traditional topping.
Like THAT’s stopped anyone before.
lol. Nah, plenty of cultures still eat bugs. Ther are a number of restaurants that feature insects in their menu in the US.

Get her some more “yorgut.” Spider form or not, she’s still adorable. I’m available for foster care.
I like Calista’s smile.
I suspect Digit is about to learn about how physical changes can affect sensory experiences.
was she always missing a couple of legs, or did she change from an arachnid to a hexapod?
She still is:
o 2 legs
o 4 arms
o 2 more appendages attached to her skull. 8D

“So how was your date with Digit?”
“I am never going out on a date again.”
“What happened?”
“I kissed her and she turned into a five foot tall spider. I was never so afraid in my entire life.”
“Why do you have so many arms?”
“It’s so I can hug you better.”
Yep, I’d date that…
Will she have to eat her own body weight in a day? a week?what is a spider’s metabolic baseline?

If they ever make Predator The Musical she’s got the main role down pat…

Hey I’m waiting for next strip… 🙂
“wow, who thought this ‘pizza’ would be so scrummy!!! 🙂 “
Don’t forget those brownies!
Cricket bearing a cricket.
Yeah, I did have to wonder about that.
Coupled with that Fae smile, it’s getting halfway toward innuendo.
The possibility of innuendo didn’t occur to me until you mentioned it.
👅🏩
Big Spider Thing! Big Spider Thing! Big Spider Thing! Augh!
Here come the nightmares. Cute teenage girl, la, la, la. . . Cricket chirping, Big Spider Thing!
I’m going to go huddle in the corner.
But she’s so cute!
Her pose in the last panel is an excellent adaptation of how real jumping spiders look pouncing.
Maybe it was just me but I couldn’t get the Wapsi site to load this page last night…
I wasn’t the only one! (I had the same problem when I tried to access it last morning)
But wouldn’t Digit be more comfortable drinking protein shakes and smoothies?
