Retrograde amnesia. Dayla couldn’t remember dying any more than Monica could after her encounter with the bus in Mexico City. This “ghost” is messing with her mind.
Paul must still be buying the fuel for his bootlegger-turn plot twist engines by the tank car load.
Dark-mirror parallel universe? A “stone tape” memory replay such as what Atsali and Nadette encountered at Mapimi, forcing Daylla into re-experiencing a twisted version of events that occurred years earlier? Hallucinogenic drugs, painted into the toilet seat in the girls’ bathroom?
“Sorry about that, Chief.” I’ll see if I can find a “coffee and cats warning” emoji to include in the future… I’ve been informed that I have permanent C&C status 😀
Quite honestly, I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. However, if the students at Gryphon have never heard of the old “Ben-Gay on the toilet seat” prank, they’d be the only secondary-school students in the entire Western hemisphere who haven’t. (And, no, I never pulled that stunt on anybody… just imagining how it must feel is enough to make me cringe.)
OK, so the implications I see are that
1) Daylla can see Dustin; no one else can
2) Dustin is apparently from the future
3) A semi-distant future where Daylla has a boyfriend Dustin, but two months beyond that when Daylla has apparently died
4) somehow Daylla shifted into that future dimension in order to see/hear Dustin clearly, but now she’s probably shifting back into the normal dimension (why she’s transparent)
5) when she’s done shifting, she’ll suddenly appear back in the hallway with the others, and have to explain what she saw/heard/happened. Good luck on that.
Whatever has been happening, it looks like Daylla is heading back to her own origination point.
Given that, the girls will soon be able to start investigating this information as a team. Alternate timeline/dimension/stonetape or actual future, the girls won’t blow this off, they will tackle it head on. Our favorite spider may know something, then the Library comes to mind and maybe the golem girls next…
There’s definitely enough differences in D & D’s respective prior pasts to make for some interesting adventures between now and whenever that is.
Psychic camouflage would be my guess. Scan the name of a loved one from the target’s subconscious, assume a form that categorically* matches their target, and then… well, I’m not sure what, but I would not be surprised if it’s some sort of hunter.
*: Which might be the derailing factor if this entity tries doing this to Cass, as Hiroshi sure isn’t the same categorical type as her.
Reminds me of the woman who had a long series of detailed dreams about a castle, going on for years . . . her husband eventually took her on a trip to Europe, where they found a castle “just like” her dreams . . .
She was able to take a tour, and noticed the guide was looking at her oddly . . . at one point she asked the guide a question that betrayed more than common knowledge about the castle.
Then she asked if the castle was haunted, and the guide crossed herself. “Yes, heaven help us, it’s been haunted for decades . . . by you!”
It sounds like the basis for a ’90s 2000AD story about an old house that’s long been haunted by an apparition of a silent monk apparently screaming for help. This investigator sets up lots of recording devices to try and capture footage of the monk, but ends up falling foul of some unseen horror and disappears. Footage of the monk is finally recovered from the recording devices – and the monk looks just like the missing investigator!
Time loop. you say? Like the one Monica & co fixed a while back? Only in that time loop, there were no futures past the point of rebound, time just cycled back, like a coil in a wire.
I’m thinking it might be a “many worlds” quantum-mechanical sort of thing… two different “what-if” timelines leaking into one another. Rather than a loop, it would be more like the river of time splitting into two (or more) separate channels, flowing separately, then coming back close enough to one another to allow people to cross between them.
I seen to recall one of the characters casting some doubt as to whether the “stone tape” theory was the right explanation for ghosts… in that model, ghosts would just be recordings and couldn’t really interact with live people. Leakage between alternate many-worlds quantum realities would mean that ghosts could be real, live people in their proper timelines, capable of real interactions with those in other timelines.
There was a comic a while back where one of the girls was talking about starting a rumor about how walking down a set of stairs in her school a certain way would send someone to an alternate reality, or something like that. (I have yet to find the actual comic.) And someone else told her it was unlikely that would actually happen. So… what if it ACTUALLY happened.
As Dustin mentioned in http://wapsisquare.com/comic/looking-for/ , he may just want to have fun. It definitely seems to be the same character. My feeling is that I am watching a mixture of Dark Shadows, Sixth Sense, and Twilight Zone.
OOOH! *and oooh of fear and surprise*
(an, not and…)
You added one, i left one off…
Surprise, fear and a fanatical devotion to the pope…oh wait.
otoh, this arc needs an inquisition
Nobody would expect it…
yeah, it’s just because we’re always expecting Ninja’s… when the Inquisition shows up, we’re unprepared for the show… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnF1OtP2Svk
That’s gotta be creep…
…errr…
“creepY“
Wait, what?
She died?!
Dayla looked awfully lively earlier.
WHAT??? WHO’S DEAD???
Wait, WHAT?!?!?!?!
What, did Dayla switch places with Dustin as the ghost?
1. Who the hell is Dustin, and since when does Daylila have a boyfriend?
2. Exactly when in time is this taking place? Did either Daylila or Dustin pop into a different time period?
3. DAYLILA DIED?
Paul, you made the wait while you were “out sick” well worth it.
Retrograde amnesia. Dayla couldn’t remember dying any more than Monica could after her encounter with the bus in Mexico City. This “ghost” is messing with her mind.
Ras-a-Fras-a-Gras-a… grrrr…. frak’n Pablo w/ his bootlegger turns.
Paul must still be buying the fuel for his bootlegger-turn plot twist engines by the tank car load.

Choking on partially aspirated coffee hurts, dammit! Ye gods, “Hallucinogenic drugs painted into the toilet seat”…
“Sorry about that, Chief.” I’ll see if I can find a “coffee and cats warning” emoji to include in the future… I’ve been informed that I have permanent C&C status 😀

@Dave
Unless the “Ben Gay” were on the genitalia, or the groin of the leg near said genitalia, I can’t imagine it being particularly … unbearable 🙄
OK, so the implications I see are that

Although, if not time travel, the dark mirror parallel universe idea could also work.
Whatever has been happening, it looks like Daylla is heading back to her own origination point.

All sing: “Let’s do the Time Warp again!!!!”
So now that you’re dead what are you going to do with the rest of your life?
Daylla looks more grown up than previously. Is this at some point in the future? And wait…
DAYLLA DIES?! NOOOOOOO!!!
I’m still thinking that the school ghost is a trickster and he is messing with them all.
And why does Dustin look enough like Timmy that Daylila thought they were the same person?
Going by Scarlet’s experience, it’s more that he sounds like Timothy.

I suspect we are mixing realities ‘here’.
`more like crossover of ALTERNATE realities/histories 🙄
Spelling error, Paul, second frame. Should be “too tall.”
Sorry, third frame.
Noooooo!
You better not have done….THIS
Ghosts as tween-men?

Any idea of the source of that tale?

that sound entirely like the plot of the recent tv series “the living and the dead”
Reminds me of the movie ‘Price of Darkness’ and the warning from the future…
Well, I have to admit that if Daylla is really dead I’m gonna be REALLY GODDAMN SAD.
First Dina Sarazu and now this.
No. That’s terrible. And “…you’re to tall…” should have one more “o”…
The more I read, the more it seems the author has been watching a lot of “Supernatural” as of late….
Is this the one where the ghost doesn’t know she is dead and keeps reliving former events?
In his best William risked voice What the bell’s is going on!! Dayla dead
Hell’s
Dag nabit auto correct hits me again William riker and hell into William risked, bell
There seems like a lot of spilling errors here today. Autocratic stream to be using the wand words. 😁
Huh, dimensional weak spot? She died in one and he dies in the other perhaps? Could be a time loop I suppose.
Time loop. you say? Like the one Monica & co fixed a while back? Only in that time loop, there were no futures past the point of rebound, time just cycled back, like a coil in a wire.

The old substitution trap. Convince your victim that they’re already in the trap, and then they will be and you’ll be free!
I wonder if Dustin is some kind of Djinn. Only his ‘bottle’ isn’t made of ‘glass’.
Why would not-Timmeh ask Daylla if she is Daylla? o_O
Couldn’t see her clearly at first?
Or, he’s partially psychic (as well as psychotic) and was able to read her surface thoughts and managed to stumble onto her name
So Daylla is Bruce Willis now??
Dustin is the ghost, and he’ s playing games with daylla’s mind.
Am I the only one who’s kind of reminded on the movie “Others”?
There was a comic a while back where one of the girls was talking about starting a rumor about how walking down a set of stairs in her school a certain way would send someone to an alternate reality, or something like that. (I have yet to find the actual comic.) And someone else told her it was unlikely that would actually happen. So… what if it ACTUALLY happened.
Skylar Faust told Atsali that when they were settling in to their dorm room.
As Dustin mentioned in http://wapsisquare.com/comic/looking-for/ , he may just want to have fun. It definitely seems to be the same character. My feeling is that I am watching a mixture of Dark Shadows, Sixth Sense, and Twilight Zone.
And THAT would be how he knows her name is Dayla…
“Aren’t you dead?”
“I get that a lot.”
b5 “Captain, we’re sorry. We thought you were dead.” “I was. I’m better now.”
Any one seen Washu? We need a temporal net asap….
