You know someone’s done goofed bad if the sphinxes have been called in to fix up the mess. . .
( I wonder what the body count was, if there were any bodies left to identify . . .)
Nope, there were no bodies to count, but the sphinxes did not need supper that night. They did have a bit of indigestion, but it passed quickly enough.
One thing about Shawna – there’s no question at all when she’s upset about something. She does an angry glare better than any of the other Wapsi characters.
“Akakios doctrine” – “akakios” apparently meaning “not evil” or “innocent” (and thus used as the name of at least one saint). I think her meaning is something along the line of “The precedent in this situation is that you have no right to punish one who is innocent” (presumably Briar). I’m not sure how the Supreme Court views the idea of eating an offender without a trial, though…. usually it requires a jury to rule on the question of tartare or flambe.
Well, I think the Sphinxes ARE their Supreme Court. The society of the supernatural has its own parallel legal system, geared towards precedents that include “dude needed eatin’.”
It seems the Sphinxes stand in for Thomas Hobbes Leviathan, that is to say the Ultimate Authority.
We don’t know just how big the paranormal community is. If it is small then the Ultimate Authority might be quite close to the regular population.
I suspect she would effectively claim justifiable homicide. Or in some regions “the varmint needed killing!” Either way I find I’m rather in agreement with her.
High school students have a lot of time on their hands to pursue special interests. I wish I had back all the time I spent on a sliding block puzzle. Maybe I’d know something.
It took me a moment to sort out in my mind, what with the similarities between Abney Park’s song “The Secret Life of Dr. Calgori” and the silent film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” as her last name sounds similar to both, but i’m getting an image in my head when i hear the symptoms shes got, combined with the visuals from the silent film (in the movie trailer at least) where everything is twisted and warped, and imagine that that’s what our reality is like to Blair. and if that’s the case, then i can seriously understand why she has difficulty relating to everything we take for granted about “here”.
Based on what we saw during the school-sleepover crisis (and her comments to Daylla afterwards), Shawna definitely has a tendency to jump in and take charge when she sees a problem. Somewhat of a bossy Lawful Good type. Not a bad sort to have around!
Either that or the paranormal community has access to a Sufficiently Advanced Technology, which seems more likely considering the fact that Earth was once part of a much wider Off Planet community.
Then again, considering the mixed ancestry of Briar, she may have direct influence over such things, effectively making her a Mage.
I agree.
Though I have to admit going to too many schools because my family was military.
Let’s see…
kindergarten (two years) was in Atlanta, Georgia…
1st and 2nd grade, Mannhiem, Germany…
3rd grade Fort Hood, tx…
4th grade, Hettie Halsted elementary…
5th grade, Mrs Jewel elementary…
6th, 7th, and first half of 8th, Avenue J. Jr high…
2nd 1/2 of 8th, Sun Prairie Jr high…
9th, Sun Prairie High…
10th Fort Knox high….
11th, Copperas Cove High…
then G.E.D.
So I was exposed to many administrations who tended to ‘drop the ball’
“Traditional Methods” I assume means Tools and Materials. Did Briar Lay a Keel for a Model?!! Just what level of Detail IS this Model? Are we talk’n Flying Dutchman?
So, are Bryn and Ms Alger the same person? Because clicking on “Bryn” and (by going a few pages back) clicking on “Ms Alger” give different lists of appearances.
I can’t help but wonder if Briar’s Directional Dyslexia is somehow involved with her ability to fly her model.
Spacial relations with her may be a lot more complex than is the norm.
Hey Paul!
I’m Rich Morris, writer/author of “Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic” and I wanted to gush a bit fanboyishly for a moment. Wapsi Square is one of the comics referenced in my comic’s title. It was yours and a small handful of others that inspired me to create my own which has itself been going fairly steady since 2006.
I find your art so beautiful it’s hypnotic. And your characters are so charming it’s hard not to fall in love with [almost] all of them. I have to confess, I’ve not ever done a proper archive binge, I simply don’t have the time! But once in a while I get sucked into chunks of it (and loose portions of my life) enough to reconnect with some of the characters.
Thanks for giving us this wonderful world to by simultaneously charmed and terrified by.
-Rich “Beholder King” Morris
Oh and I wanted to add that your animated shorts are spectacular. I’ve already watched ‘The Library Ghost’ about 20 times. I hope you’ll do more like it sometime.
OMG Thank you so much! ^_^ I’m honored and humbled that my work in any small way helped inspire you to start your own comic and story telling. =D Thanks so much for your positive words! ^_^
My pleasure. I’ve done a little bit of Monica fan-art… trying to see if I can simulate your style at all. Is there somewhere I can share it? I LOVE your big-square hands and feet. So many of us struggle with hands and feet. I had a co-worker (I’ve mostly worked as a Character Designer and a Storyboard Artist) who used to draw all his characters standing in water so he didn’t have to draw feet.)
I wonder what a Collab comic strip by you Rich and Paul would be like, especially now that magic is vanishing in the “Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic” world, or I guess one of the characters from the “Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic” world could end up in the Wapsi Square world looking for answers 🙂
Rich considering I don’t know who survived, I have only seen a few so fare that seems to have survived, but I guess Gren Razortooth as she was the original lead character, maybe Eddy the Ex-mage if he is alive.
Hello, Rich.
welcome to Wapsi.
I was not even aware of your comic until you posted here.
I am busy reading your comic now.
so far, I like it a lot.
The wapsi influence is obvious, but not intrusive…
very good.
I second the notion of a collaborative crossover between you two. (though I’m not a really good judge of such things)
Thank you! I appreciate the welcome and the feedback.
Wapsi is awesome and love Paul’s work and creation, so yeah, I think there’s definitely some influence. Wapsi’s got some really great creep-factor that I could only wish to match, but I do what I can.

Paranormal Parallel Legal System. Somehow I just find that funny.
They are the judges, jury, and – depending on the type – the executioner as well…
It seems the Sphinxes stand in for Thomas Hobbes Leviathan, that is to say the Ultimate Authority.

Shawna is definitely on the MIBs short list for future members. If nothing else she is set for the legal department’s of the MIB.
Hmm… Not so sure about that. I mean, she appears to be one of the taller girls in class…
Yes your honor, I know I stepped into that one.
Looking at Shawna in profile, are we SURE she isn’t part Succubus?
Looking at her in profile, I’m not sure where she keeps her internal organs.
Hello, Dr. Wallaby, and welcome to the Wapsiverse. You clearly haven’t been here long…
When did Shawna study law? I mean, I know a lot of time passes between our scenes with them, but I thought they were still in high school.
High school students have a lot of time on their hands to pursue special interests. I wish I had back all the time I spent on a sliding block puzzle. Maybe I’d know something.
She is a Model Builder! Huzzah!
Awww…Shawna wants to protecc, too! Yay!
Based on what we saw during the school-sleepover crisis (and her comments to Daylla afterwards), Shawna definitely has a tendency to jump in and take charge when she sees a problem. Somewhat of a bossy Lawful Good type. Not a bad sort to have around!
bossy Lawful Good?
you talk as if there was some other sort of lawful good.
she protecc, but she can also attacc–that’s why she has Briar’s back…
Model ship… traditional methods… and it’s a flying ship. That’s a very interesting tradition.
Is Briar a Spark?
Either that or the paranormal community has access to a Sufficiently Advanced Technology, which seems more likely considering the fact that Earth was once part of a much wider Off Planet community.
Then again, considering the mixed ancestry of Briar, she may have direct influence over such things, effectively making her a Mage.
Damn I wish my school administrators were this on the ball when I was in school.
I agree.

Answered my own question by noticing her being referred to as “Ms Andersen.”
Although, I guess the lack of Bryn calling anyone “Hunny” should’ve been a dead giveaway too, really.
Last I recall, Bryn was Castela’s mom’s paramour? Not sure if the relationship ever progressed, wonder if she’s graduated to “step-doptive” guardian?
I can’t help but wonder if Briar’s Directional Dyslexia is somehow involved with her ability to fly her model.

Are you on Twitter? I’m @pablowapsi there. I haven’t been to my DA page in forever.
If Paul were interested and we could schedule time to work on such a thing, I’d be on it in a heartbeat. Who would you want to see interact?
Rich considering I don’t know who survived, I have only seen a few so fare that seems to have survived, but I guess Gren Razortooth as she was the original lead character, maybe Eddy the Ex-mage if he is alive.
Oh hang on, I found your DA page. I’ll post there. I’m “Gorpo”.
I am on Twitter but I don’t use it much. This could be an excuse to get back into it, though.

Aw. Doing a bit of quick research, doesn’t look like Paul does crossovers. Alas. Still, it’d be a fun mental exercise.
I absolutely LOVE Ms Anderson’s outlook on the matter.
“trepidation seeing Miss Gilchrist is involved” is WONDERFUL!!!
Why do I get the feeling people tend to walk on eggshells when Cassie is around?
What is she gonna do… turn the school into a radioactive crater?
She can?
That explains a lot.
LoL
