I just responded up top. Basically, I think she was just trying to rationalize what happened and being too quick to blame herself. I’ll add this to that argument: in the middle panel yesterday, Shelly was almost ready to condemn herself again for forgetting the people she left behind.

Shelly’s gunna have to dig through 80,000 years of “sacred forest” and “sword in the stone” memories to finally get back to reality… this may take a while…..
Not saying that Monica’s dense (only sometimes when she’s sailing on denial), but that “sword in the stone” made some weird links, like, no wonder Shelly’s the appointed bearer of sharp-pointy objects. (runs with scissors ala Creepy Girl, pen knives to clock someone with …)
Going back through the archive and the books, it’s amazing the hints, clues, and symbolism that’s rampant in this strip. I am fascinated at what reading back will reveal.
For fun, go look at the Cinco de Maya pic, take a piece of paper, a post-sized will do, and cover Monica’s face vertically. Look at her expression on the half on the side with Brandi and Bud, and then on the side with Shelly….

And it occurs to me that the person Shelly #1 died to try and help, might have been May instead of Jin. If they didn’t know that Jin needed help, but found the artifact, they might have though they could use it to fix the CM and rescue May.

I have a vague inkling that Shelly already, unconciously knew that somewhere, in some time-line, she’d be one of the most lonely persons ever….
