What’s so hilarious is that Katherine’s fear is in no way ameliorated by Phix’s rather adorable pince-nez.
It could be because her terror is aggravated by Phix’s fangs, clearly visible in her grimace.
Not to mention the fact that a pissed-off librarian looks terrifying enough as-is…

Katherine doubtless knows all kinds of myths and legends about sphinxes; this probably makes Phix a lot more fearsome to her than it otherwise would.
And from what we’ve seen, some of those myths were right on the money.
Still, after all these years, my favorite drawing of Phix.
Her eyes are stranger than that, however Paul chooses to draw them. She has “spider eyes” with too many pupils. We’ll learn about her bizarre origins much later.
