hyperventilating is breathing too fast and/or deeply. It causes overly low blood CO2 levels, which cause high blood alkalinity, which causes constriction of blood vessels supplying the brain, which causes all the other symptoms associated with it.

Hypovolemia is when blood plasma levels fall dangerously low: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypovolemic_shock Shelly’s was probably caused by dehydration. The cyanosis in her extremities would have happened because there was not enough plasma to transport oxygenated red blood cells to them.

Hypovolemia can also be caused by long-term bleeding, also known as “bleeding out”. I did that once. While it appears to have cured an incurable condition (Congestive Heart Failure) I can’t recommend it. In the days leading up to my hospitalization, the feeling of not enough oxygen to keep me alive truly sucked.

CO2 is a toxin to the body, hence why the body reacts to it. Of course, then naturally humans use it and put it inside soda/soft drinks, so that we can put it back into our bodies and go through our body systems in massive amounts. Soda is no ones friend. Ever.

My favorite CO2 source is Root Beer.
