Being paranormal means a lot of wish-fulfillment works despite science saying it shouldn’t.

    That includes deathwishes.

I mean, one of Astali’s fellow university student exists because of belief in a teapot.

Depending on one’s beliefs, one can say that all things come into existence from “wish-fulfillment”. I made a cake once by wishing I had a cake and then using physical magical instruments and magical recipes, and a magical oven using magical electricity to get magical heat, the cake came into existence. It wasn’t instantaneous, but I wished it first.
One could say that the Universe came into existence in the same way.

Trying to work out if Briar is answering Cassies question with her own theory or if she’s just bouncing around thoughts as they occur to her …

    berkelianism . . .

There was a professor named Dodd
Who said “God must think it exceedingly odd,
    to find that this tree
    Continues to ve
When there’s no-one about in the quad.”

    Which drew the reply”
    “Dear sir, your astonishment’s odd;
I am always about in the quad.
    Thus the tree
    will continue to be,
Since observed by, yours faithfully, God.”

The observer needs to be nothing more than an ant, or even less, so long as it can sense the observed. Nor is the sense limited to sight, as any of the other senses will do just fine.

If a tree falls in the forest where nobody is there to hear, does it hit the bear crapping in the woods?

I’m not sure, but bear with me,

if the bear leaves, so also the tree leaves…
thus bearing witness to the sound of the bear leaving…
eventually causing the bear to be frightened and leaving the area to branch out.

Well, that’s what I heard someone say who said they were there, but only barely.

Or she could go check if she has any new holes created by belief. Given that she is the actual wall parallel universes.

René Descartes, famed French philosopher and scientist, was a notorious drunkard around the Parisian academies. He would enter a bar in the morning, spend all day drinking on credit, and then when it was time to close, the barkeep would ask: “Monsieur Descartes, will you settle your tab?”
And René would smirk a little and reply, “I think not.” and vanish without a trace.

How do you feel about “And Now the News?”

      • Dave
        September 15, 2023, 7:08 am | #

Like many of Sturgeon’s stories, it was disturbing prescient, and presciently disturbing.

Laumer’s “The Walls” is almost a companion piece – a different “look ahead” at the impact of our modern “saturation media”. Doesn’t make me any less uneasy now than it did when I first read it about 50 years ago.

Can’t recall if I’ve read “The Walls” or not—parts of my collection is relatively inaccessible these days because of accumulated junk—and I’m not sure I have any of the Laumer collections it was in. Several passes through the Internet didn’t enlighten me any. (Generally liked the Bolo stories—engines of destruction as sympathetic characters—something like Our Gal Castela, come to think of it).

I like Sturgeon enough to have all thirteen volumes of his Collected Stories…been rereading them of late (I could get to them easy). Still remember the first time I read some of them.

I think that last sentence should read “What happens *if* you no longer believe in yourself?”

“What happens when you no longer believe in yourself?”

This is not the first time this idea has crossed my attention this week. I’m starting to wonder if I’m about to have a Twilight Zone event happen.

That sounds like a ‘if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?’ Conundrum

    • RBZ
      September 14, 2023, 1:11 pm | # | Reply

That’s an easy one to answer.
All you need to do is define what a sound is, and a few other more complicated philosophical ambiguities.
Once you’ve done that, real easy to answer.

        Q. What is the sound of one hand clapping? A. Half the sound of what one expects a clap should sound like!

Ooh I think I see where this is going? If the girl stopped believing in her own existence, and stopped believing in it hard enough, then once she was no longer around to be observed as existing by others she just… ceased to exist. Including in records.

That’s a terrifying thought, especially if you take into account different cultures’ views on the afterlife necessitating the living remember you somehow or you cease to exist there as well.

      October 15, 2023, 11:04 pm | # | Reply

And then there’s the argument that whatever we belief doesn’t matter, because regardless of what we believe, what we believe has no bearing on the Truth – which exists independent on the beliefs of the current 8 billion people on the Earth who constantly change beliefs throughout all our lives even without realizing it. And if beliefs don’t matter of themselves, then there is some other reason as to why we choose to not get along.

      Just sayin’
