Yeah, I seem to recall something about how when she was in the orphanage she used to catch faeries and rip off their wings before popping their heads off.
Not scarring, not even mentally. Castela thinks of herself as a dangerous thing from which her Mama needs protection. Kathrine has also just told Castela to open up to her and take the risk of exposing her vunerability (she might be physically invunerable, but she can be hurt by rejection or by those close to her being hurt) it is only fair that Katherine take that risk and speak of things she hides. She is also telling Castela that while she is not a para, she is still a very capable predator.
Perhaps nothing. I’m reminded of the Q-room segment where Castela found out about Atsali’s parents and how they protected her and Cas (the plant). http://wapsisquare.com/comic/where-do-we-start/
Had to go back and re-read that arc… The days when Kat was a simple (ish) mortal researcher with powerful friends, Atsali was a super smart skinny dork, and Pickle was a little shrub girl with horns.
Hmm… That was the last real “oh crap everything is doooomed” story arc that we’ve had isn’t it? Not that highschool hijinks don’t have their place but I’m certainly hoping that the recent mention of the world grid means we are about to embark on one again.
I said this at the time, but it bears repeating.
I did a report on the A-10 for a class.
I discovered a report that the ONLY air-to-air gun kills in Desert Storm was an A-10 that discovered two Hind-Ds strafing civilians on the ground.
The Hind-D is supposed to be a flying tank, but the Warthog is a tank-killer.
That gun on the A-10 can penetrate 2 FEET of steel-reinforced concrete at a range greater than one mile.
The armor on the Hind-D was not designed for such power.
I still wonder if Pablo knew of that report when he wrote that strip.
It’s similar to listening to a military veteran who was in close combat situations.
Anyone who comes back from seeing something like that & *doesn’t* have some mental scars, then they’ve probably sunk below the threshold for being a humane human…They used to call it Shell Shock.
At least Cassie knows *now* that Kath can really understand those scars, what that can do to a person & still be able to retain sanity through it & after it.
And know Cass learns that biology not withstanding, she is a full and true daughter of Katherine Gilchrist. Katherine may not be able to carve granite with built in plasma blasts, but eve. without being a Para she is a fully capable predator and guardian and may the gods have mercy on those who threaten or worse harm what she perceives to be under her protection, because Katherine will have none.
yeah I don’t remember anything about that whatsoever. with such deep archives on this comic, some links in the “blog” section are in order.
That’s… because it was never mentioned, until now
More backstory on Katherine. I wouldn’t blame her for totally losing it either . . .
And, she did it with an archeology trowel. The kind that aren’t sharp.
A piece of paper can penetrate an Oak tree, if driven by the force of a hurricane or tornado…
Sometimes one finds out surprising things about one’s parents.
First yelling at her, now mentally scarring? Do the MIB have a CPS division? Kidding!
Castela did some things back in her shrubhood in defending herself. Sometimes, one doesn’t realize others can be capable of similar.

Damn, Kath. Talk about scary. Castela may be more powerful than her mom, but she’s no more badass.
The use, and abuse, of the NATO-standard trenching tool.
Oh, you mean the Army issue battleaxe?
Deathkorps entrenching tool
Castela: *TILT*
“No wonder Mom is so good at talking me down from rages! She *understands*…”
minor word-o — panel 2, Castella “…add any scars to you m-m-mind”
Perhaps “you” should be “your”.
.
I wonder what, if anything, Castela is going to tell Atsali…
Perhaps nothing. I’m reminded of the Q-room segment where Castela found out about Atsali’s parents and how they protected her and Cas (the plant). http://wapsisquare.com/comic/where-do-we-start/
I was a bit confused about who did what to whom.
Is this to say Kathrine carved up the lone survivor of the attacking helicopter?
That’s how it reads. Sliced and diced.
Remember what happened to the squirrels that ate the plants she was growing?
I didn’t remember the color splash on the flashback. Is that an update? it’s very effective, I just didn’t think it was there originally.
Oh good, it wasn’t just me that didn’t remember the color. Makes what happened that much more… oof.
It was originally present.

SHEEEIIIT!!! and Castle was worried about her scaring her mom???
Did anyone else go back and spend an hour or two rereading up through Pickle’s adoption?
Thanks to Pablo’s link, and Great Scott’s, I just spent a couple of hours reading through several arcs. time well spent. It’s been a while.

A BRRRRT of depleted uranium will ruin anyone’s day.
Especially an OH-58 Kiowa like the one in that arc.

I assume that the “Dead Sea dig” incident (where Katherine was the only survivor) occurred AFTER her time in the US AirForce❗
(Hinoron slams “Monster”, by Restless Love into the stereo! Makes for a great BGM to the final panel of Castela’s eyes just getting wider and wider!”
(And if you’re not familiar with the song, it’s on Youtube. Also featured in the Peacemaker show on Netflix.)
