(Dave thinks about school lunches, hopes they have Greek street food at least occasionally, hums a few bars of “We can eat gyros, just for one day”, and drops a few drachmas in the Pun Jar in honor of Castela and her growing maturity and sense of concern)
Presumably the ‘disapearing act’ will be obviated by her ‘following’ Castella from class to class. Briar herself thinks “Oh Fudge! I knew I should have asked them to show me to the office.“, which I infer to mean that having someone to ‘anchor’ to visually keeps the “Disapearing Act” from happening.
I’d think she just took a totally different path, like stairs instead of walking on, or something.. Sudden dissapearence is common with small kids, puppies, kitties and keys
To me it seems to be the opposite of autism. Autisics tend to have hyperstructured minds that have problems when reality doesn’t match their percived reality. She seems unstructured unable to make even simple connections.
I wonder if it turns out she sees (and can travel) in more than 3 dimensions. She would have problems with locations, and directions because ‘straight down the hall on the left’ in three dimensions makes no sense when in 4D there is no ‘straight’ or ‘left’.
She can perceive hyperdimensions, but hasn’t yet learnt to filter her perception, resulting in issues when trying to process all her environmental stimuli. Additionally, the school may extend into these hyperdimensions, resulting in other passageways that ‘normals’ aren’t aware of, so although Briar followed the instructions, the instructions didn’t account for the corridor on the left that extends beyond 3D that was just before the corridor on the left that led to the office.
Also, “straight” and “left” exist in 2D & 3D, so there’s nothing to prevent them from existing in 4D and beyond.
To clarify when changing from 3d to 4d it changes everything about what’s being described.
1 A 3d cube when shown on paper the 3 identical square sides you see will look like 3 different shaped parallelograms.
2 if you draw a ‘straight’ line with a left turn on a piece of paper, then fold the paper across the line, the line becomes bent and left becomes above and to the left.
3 take a flat piece of rubber a draw a square on it. Now pull the rubber up next to the square. In 2d that is still a square, in 3d it’s distorted and not flat.
So where she wanted to go might be down the curved/ bent hallway on the [4th dimensional direction] left. In THIS case there’s no straight and left isn’t JUST left.
What the kind of cognitive challenge does she have? Her thought process seems to jump all over or hyperfocus in on one concept. Reminds me of one of my students that had ADHD but they were no where near as extreme as this
Actually, reminds me of my primary care physician, who had to have been ADHHHHHHHHD as a child. He is also extremely smart and a good physician, but hoo boy.
I’m sure someone else has already pondered: Briar…. guessing Briar Rose… Another plant person? Might explain the instinctive “this is one of my people” response.
no,, not part plant… but what some are guessing is,, Briar is a “sister replacement”, look at her (similar not same) size & build, an then there is the “air head” similarity..
That was my first thought when she first met Cass. Add into the mix She’s part Succubus, she didn’t expound on the rest of her heritage .
This young lady will be very interesting. *enter Aunt Bud,from shadows – MIB observer *
Briar will bring some lovely color to Gryphon High. I know Cass is up to the challenge, but there may be additional introspection that goes on before the dust settles. <3
WOW!!!
You make a very good diagnosis and make it sound quite convincing.
You apparently have much more knowledge of the subject matter than I do (and with my “addiction” for information, that’s saying something).
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re at least partially correct, but would be astonished if you are fully correct.
You could well be correct, Nim… and, it may go even further than you suggest.
Her “disappearing act” in the school corridor (suddenly finding herself in the boiler room) might not just be wandering-off-course due to spatial dyslexia. It might be the other way around, if what Castela and Shawna were talking about is true… she might be teleporting (uncontrollably).
For her, normal spatial relationships might not just be hard to learn or remember… they might not even exist, in the usual sense! If she spontaneously “wanders” (via teleportation, apportation, wormholes, or whatever), then “going left” from a given place might take her to any of several different destinations at different times. It’d be damned hard to develop (let alone maintain) a meaningful sense of spatial awareness, if the whole darned three-dimensional universe has a habit of rearranging itself around you without even a polite do-you-mind.
So, spatial dyslexia might not be the cause of her problem. It might be a result of a more fundamental problem.
(Dave hums verse of an old Guess Who song… “She’s come undone… she didn’t know what she was headed for, and when she found what she was headed for, it was too late… she’s come undone.”)
Aaaahhh, @Dave. That would be “Undone” from Canned Wheat, 1969. One of my favorite albums back in the day. If I remember correctly, it followed “Laughing” on side A. Thanks for the memories.
Well, I do want to see what her sister is like…are all succubusses (succubi?) like this? (Besides, it was said her sister would be working at Mucho Mocha and I’d like to see Tina again, too.)
Almost everyone here is so concerned about Briar and how mature Castela is being looking out for her … so, as JSStryker first asked and I’m asking again: What does Shawna think about all this? Why hasn’t Castela even mentioned her and how this is going to impact _their_ relationship? I’n not sure I like where this is going.
Why should it impact their relationship? Stela is simply being asked to ensure Briar reaches her next classroom safely, not go out on a date with her and show her a ‘good time’
Cas hasn’t stopped blushing since they met. That means nothing? Thanks for the exaggeration, by the way. I’m sure by now you know that relationships are more than “showing a good time.”
How about we use a better term, before we go down the rabbit hole.
Dyslexia means “Word Blind”, and has a specific meaning, although it’s symptoms are myriad, and vary from case to case. There are other “dys” issues, such as Dysnumeria and Dyscalculia. A person may or may not have more than one of these kind of issues, but they are considered to be different, and not necessarily related. Please don’t assume that someone who has one of these kind of issues has all of them. Because WE (emphasis) do not.
I propose using the term Dyslocis. (Think dislocate.)
I am not arguing against this line of thought, let me say. Just consider that many of us who are readers of this comic are, lets say non-neurotypical. So, please consider what, and how, you speak on the subject. We tend to stay quiet, for many reasons, not the least of which is fear of discrimination and ridicule. Others of us have issues that serve as a barrier to speaking up.
dyslexia’s of the world “untie.”..
i have strephosymbolia, or my brain never reversed what i see..(example: if you tell me go left , i have to consciously “Think” left, or i will go right.. cuz that is my left..)
Heroes are made, not born!
A lunchtime Care Buddy, no less!
(Dave thinks about school lunches, hopes they have Greek street food at least occasionally, hums a few bars of “We can eat gyros, just for one day”, and drops a few drachmas in the Pun Jar in honor of Castela and her growing maturity and sense of concern)
Dammit Dave. I tried so hard to not laugh at that pun but you broke me.
That’s all well and good… but what about that disappearing act she pulled when she first showed up? How does one keep tabs on that?
Presumably the ‘disapearing act’ will be obviated by her ‘following’ Castella from class to class. Briar herself thinks “Oh Fudge! I knew I should have asked them to show me to the office.“, which I infer to mean that having someone to ‘anchor’ to visually keeps the “Disapearing Act” from happening.
I agree, but we STILL have no idea (and it seems Briar doesn’t either) what she did or how she disappeared in the first place.
Maybe she has a unique ability of some kind?…. I’m going to go with smart phone tracking to keep tabs on her and pray that it actually works.
I’d think she just took a totally different path, like stairs instead of walking on, or something.. Sudden dissapearence is common with small kids, puppies, kitties and keys
👆 THIS 👆
Can’t wait for them to vist Aunt Tina.
I wonder what Shawna thinks about this?
Why do I smell a jealousy misunderstanding about this coming down the road?
Why, who would think THAT would happen?
…
…
We are going to need lots of popcorn.
Hmm judging from her mannerisms briar seems like a high functioning autistic something along the lines of aspergers syndrome perhaps

Exactly my thoughts a couple of pages back.

Somehow… I don’t think Tumbleweed is thinking sisterly thoughts about Briar, though.
With a challenge like this I’m beginning to see how Castela developed into a bricc.
Briar will bring some lovely color to Gryphon High. I know Cass is up to the challenge, but there may be additional introspection that goes on before the dust settles. <3
That ‘dust’ ain’t settling for quite some time.
I’d say when Briar is pushing triple-digit age in years.
The ‘dust’ isn’t her, but how everyone REACTS to her. Once everyone gets used to her peculiar ways the dust will settle.
WOW!!!

Ms Al;
Could you at LEAST give us SOME idea what we’re observing?
You obviously know something.
DANG!!!
You could well be correct, Nim… and, it may go even further than you suggest.

haha,, @Dave: you just described a walking “Improbably Drive.” o.0
Aaaahhh, @Dave. That would be “Undone” from Canned Wheat, 1969. One of my favorite albums back in the day. If I remember correctly, it followed “Laughing” on side A. Thanks for the memories.

No sign of anything this extreme in Atsali’s roommate Skylar or her mother Selene.
Must be the horns.

I would think that Shawna is well informed that Cas is, by nature, a guardian type. As far as Cas not telling her, the day is young yet.
Cas hasn’t stopped blushing since they met. That means nothing? Thanks for the exaggeration, by the way. I’m sure by now you know that relationships are more than “showing a good time.”

There’s a distinct Batty Koda vibe going on here. I wonder what channels she gets?
