    Been there. In Ashqelon someone (can’t remember if it was me or not) uncovered a sherd of porcelain. I piped up “okay who’s the joker, burying a broken plate from the hotel”.

    Turns out it was, in fact, Chinese porcelain from the 11th century, imported to Ashqelon under the Fatimids or Crusaders. It just looked THAT modern. Because the Chinese were THAT far ahead of the West at the time, the Islamic world counting as West too…
