That’s an Impressive set of choppers! I’d take Scar’s “pinky finger” threats seriously. That first panel is how you spell R-E-L-I-E-F. Both are having the same thought again, and it isn’t necessary to have a thought balloon.
In the last few comics Cass’ body shape has changed a fair bit from slim to muscular seemingly depending on her control over her emotional state. I think because her natural form is a houseplant and she’s a hormonal teenager her control over her appearance isn’t the best at this stage, and her appearance is reacting more to how she feels in the moment.
Why would you call that a “Doonesbury” moment? So far, the only visible sign of sudden maturation I’ve seen there is suddenly going without a helmet for the first time.
Probably an only-me reference, but there was one strip where Mike’s daughter goes from wide, circular ‘child/Boopsie’ eyes, to the classic Doonesbury eyes, during a conversation about how you never notice when kids grow up. It was so subtle but so powerful, it stuck with me!
I guess an ultrasonic squeeee isn’t enough to make the character list. I think Scar deserves a mention. She did brilliantly on both deduction and execution.
Dave: (from one huge Dan O’Neil fan to another): the correct spelling is (confusingly) “fuchsia”. It helps to know it was named after botanist Leonhart Fuchs. And no, I will not otherwise stoop to acknowledge your pun! 😛
I don’t know which part of this is the best for me. The fact that Cass didn’t self-destruct. Or Scarlets Squeeing herself into and alternate dimension. or at least look like she is.
Aside on great writing: One of the things that distinguishes truly great writers is the consistency of their characters’ voices. There are people in Homer who speak twice in 20,000 lines of poetry, but it’s obviously the same person both times. The last panel here captures Cass struggling to overcome her self-consciousness, and let herself be happy as only the 14 year old Cass can. And Shawna shows her relief and subdued jubilation by being sweet and comforting. Cass uses “I”. Shawna uses “We”.
I know some people are disappointed with the turn towards much younger characters. But we’ve seen them and their voices grow in ways that make the earlier cast seem slightly flat by comparison. I miss the early huge plot arcs, but many authors paint themselves into the corner of having to up the threat each time. “Today we saved the Planet, Galaxy, Universe, Time-Space Continuum, etc…” And for all the temptation to ratchet up power, it’s still not clear that there’s *anythng* more dangerous than Bud out there.
Ok, I’m a fan. Cass is one of the best drawn (all senses of the word) and evolving characters I’ve ever seen. Notice how her incredibly sensitive sense of emotion smell hasn’t worked vis-a-vis Shawna? We haven’t had that rubbed in our faces, but it makes Cass fully alive by its omission.
Frame 1 : Nice. All the relief, comfort, awe, hope, everything. **daaaw** moment
Frame 2 : Cutest Scar has ever been shown.
Frame 3 : “Oh Dog, please, no mistakes”
The little touch I like most is this: yesterday during the kiss, and in the first panel in today’s strip, Castela’s arms are down at her sides. It’s as if she was a bit startled by Shawna’s action and wasn’t sure how to react.
Then, in the last frame today, her arms have come up, and she’s hugging Shawna.
Hahaha Scarlets squeeing face is adorable ^^
That’s what I was gonna say! *SQUEEEE!!!*
Probably in the ultrasonic range…
I love how you can hear the “squeeee!”
She’s so happy, her eyes crossed.

Just realizing Scarlet might be Paul’s self-insert character. 😛
Pretty good, Cass!
Pretty good, Cass!
Damn. Sorry for the double post.
You were just that excited, that’s all.
YAAAAAAAYYYYY!!
I think there was a squee just not a frequency mortals like us could hear!
Or Para’s apparently 😛
Yeah but all the dogs in a 10 mile radius just went crazy!
that’s weird, all my sub-harmonic sensors just broke….
Firstly, I do think I can hear that second panel.
Secondly, did Cass just have a ‘Doonsebury’ moment, where the subtle facial change in shading and shape shows she’s levelled up maturity wise?
I think her lips are just reacting to unfamiliar familiarity.

No, she looked like that last page as well

*Waves goodbye to Hiroshi as the bus leaves*
I forget, does Cass blush red or green?
Yes.
She’s also been known to blush other colors when under extreme emotional stress. There was one time she was suffering from fuscia shock, for instance…
Dave. Pun jar. NOW.
You rose to that pun occasion.
Dave: (from one huge Dan O’Neil fan to another): the correct spelling is (confusingly) “fuchsia”. It helps to know it was named after botanist Leonhart Fuchs. And no, I will not otherwise stoop to acknowledge your pun! 😛
Thank you, rdp – I guess I’ve grown too dependent on autocorrect 🙁
(Dave offers a Magic Cookie to the Pun Jar, but suggests that the Jar save it for a time when the Jar isn’t otherwise busy)
Unfortunately, Castela’s stutter has made a comeback.
let’s out a tiny “eeee” also why isn’t Scarlet tagged? ~<3
“I Kissed a Girl, and I liked It!, Taste of her Cherry Chapstick…”
heh as long as Shawna doesn’t break out into singing the Cowsills- Flower girl
Dammit, I haven’t thought of that song for over 40 years. And now it’s back.
Aaaaw, so nervous her stammer came back.
At least she didn’t unravel…
Daaawwwwww!
She’s got stars in her eyes…
Looks more like flowers to
They’re likely starbursts; an effect given to some chars. (usually in Manga) to denote excitement or internal turmoil…and who could blame her?
Have seen flowers that look like that
Flower-bursts 😀
Oh, and for those wondering, Cass CAN close her eyes even when her photoreceptor stalks have just inflated.
Well, I was worried…
I think they’re about the same place as her corneas would be. It’s just she has empty eye sockets.
I SHIP IT!

I was expecting spontaneous flower blooming.
This time, she’s just a pistil.
*Points indignantly into pun jar*
At least she didn’t unravel…

why did cass get “Cutie face” from the first panel to last?

Frame 3 : “Oh Dog, please, no mistakes”
And, that slight stammer at the end is priceless!
Scared to death that saying the word will ruin the happy, but speaking out anyway, because she might feel safe enough.
So will they have a polyamorous relationship with Hiroshi?

To me, that says “Feelings confirmed!”
Allllll Abbboooardddd… cuz dat ship has set sail.!
