1: Even if she goes out in public, she’s still trapped, she can’t really let lose, she can’t even really take off the mask while she’s in a private setting without terrifying people, so she’s physically trapped (At least in a way).
2: She’s a teacher, she has to run everything through a filter, every word she says, every joke she makes, if it offends someones feelings, yeah, no, outrage culture is very much a thing, and triply so when children are involved. This in and of itself is actually not terrible, I hold parents should actually pay more attention to more things their children do where and when they can, but..yeah…she’s trapped socially as well.
3: She’s on a budget, like all of us are, and as such has those limitations thrust upon her, unless she’s paid dramatically better then standard teaching wages pretty much across the globe of misery and sheer pitiful value. So she’s economically trapped.
4: She’s probably, I’d put money, very much a predator style supernatural being, and, as such, there’s any number of individuals, both amongst predators and prey, who probably think she shouldn’t be teaching because of that, unreasonable though that may be, so she’s consistently fighting against being trapped by her nature. Or, inversely, say she’s prey, those same prejudices might come up because of any of an assortment of idiotic reasons.
…Not all chains are made of metal. Indeed, most aren’t.
Depending on her choice of non-para destinations, she can wear a full burka, maybe a niqab, a balaclava, a mirrored paintball mask, a mirrored (hard) ski mask, a really big wig Cousin Itt-style.
But, like @Chameon says: ‘…Not all chains are made of metal. Indeed, most aren’t.’
Valerie is quite right. Any supernatural being which had been trapped for years in an abandoned building, with no access to modern plumbing, would certainly be eager to escape.
It would also be rather cranky. And probably desperate for a long, hot shower.
When she said it — I thought of the scene just before the end of “Major League” with catcher Jake at the plate, and he sends his idea to the manager who says “That’s a hell of an idea”. (Sorry, the clips I can find start just after that point.)
A location around here with no running water or power? I’m very curious to see this place.
Mansions and castles that one can live in were usually refitted once power- and water-grids became available, first for the comfort of the inhabitants and then for guests or tourists. Heating might be another issue as many older buildings relied on coal-ovens and their high ceilings often make them difficult to heat efficiently. While they are often refitted with modern heating systems, some places kept the old ovens too for authenticity and the occasional use.
The abandoned hotel ‘Waldlust’ might come to mind, it was build in the early 20th century, but it is only without power and water because the cables/pipes were destroyed over time and there are actual ghost stories about it (from the past decades when it was still in use and with power).
umm no,,, most of the old castles (at least 50%) are NOT allowed to update ,, for history’s sake.. the reason most DON’T buy castles is you are not allowed to upgrade,, fix yes, update no.. also except for power (it would be power cords every where) it would mean a major floor plan change to add heating (1600’s) or plumbing (mid 1800’s)… sooo if the place is 4 or 5 hundred years old, or older, it is not historical or economically feasible to update it…
Hello Robnot,
then you have visited different castles/mansions then I have in the region.
The ones I’ve visited had both (tourists do need facilities after all) and mansions (like Villa Colombi, in german Colombischlössle, in the center of Freiburg, 19th century) that I’ve visited were usually electrified and supplied with water piping and more modern heating before historical concerns were an issue (like my grandparents’ home).
In older castles in the area, historic rooms were naturally preserved as much as possible but there was power and running water on-site for the guests or inhabitants who live there.
We have no indication of the target building’s age, though as a mansion-castle, it sounds like something closer to the 18th or 19th century than the middle ages, as the building type became more popular as castles ceased being primarily military defences.
While I can’t find a definite date anywhere, from the way Barbara speaks about it it sounds like the castle has been abandoned for a very long time – quite possibly since before that kind of refittings were possible
The style of the facade leads me to believe that the last upgrade was no sooner than 1740 and, as it is on the southern edge of the Schwartzwald, it most likely is in the Biedermeier style and no earlier than 1815. So, odds are good it has been plumbed for running water and gas lighting. Electricity is less likely.
@Gavote: see here’s the thing,, modern plumbing like you are thinking was not till the late 1800’s .. water closet , yes ,, but not plumbed ,, thats what servants are for.. (uggh , off to the cesspit ..) .. an if i remember correctly , Germany did not get sewage plumbing till the 1860’s,, i think..
sooo the modern fully functional ‘Bathroom’ was not a thing till the 1930’s.. an yes the rich, an famous , had water closets an bathing rooms,, but the plumbing for said rooms did not come till the late 1800’s …
For some reason, I flashed to her in one of those “My culture is not your costume” ads, even though Spider Girl and actual spiders are two different things.
Though I imagine that, as an intellectual, she has no problem with the Spiderverse characters and wouldn’t be totally opposed to cosplaying from that universe.
@Guesticus:
I don’t remember Spider-WOMAN very well (^or^ her power-set), but I ^do^ know that May(😏Mayday) Parker has (pretty much❓) the same powers as her father (Peter).
Digit at may not have exceptional ^strength^, but she CAN aparently climb walls!😎
Just did a quick search to fill in any memory blanks, and the first Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) debuted in 1977
Hmm, not sure why was so sure the second Spider-Woman was also named ‘Jessica’, butt she is Julia Carpenter
Anyone else notice comics missing from the Archives? Castela overhearing Scar and Timmy from behind a pillar. Maybe a 156 Weeks Later post. Not sure what else.
Two words…GOOD POINT!!!
Agreed.
Famous Last Words much, Valerie?
This brings up *so* *many* *questions*… …that I’m kinda afraid of the answers to…
Cue ominous CRACK! of thunder. >:D
Krack-A-THOOM!!!
[Garfield pokes in from camera left] “Nice touch.”
I don’t know about thunder, but those are some ominous words from what is effectively an eldritch abomination: “I’d want to escape if it were me”
Valerie? When were you a trapped supernatural being?
She already is, in a way.
She can’t go out in public since she can’t form a passable human face, unless
she claims her face was badly disfigured from an accident or disease.
Piling onto this.
1: Even if she goes out in public, she’s still trapped, she can’t really let lose, she can’t even really take off the mask while she’s in a private setting without terrifying people, so she’s physically trapped (At least in a way).

She… didn’t say she was, simply that she would be looking for any way to escape
The “is” in the first panel should be “if”. Also, do you mean there is no running water? (Thus bottled water and a portal for bathroom use? )
They all seem stone-faced about this.

Mansion walls do not a prison make…or DO they??? *creepy dramatic music*

The “bunt and run” where Jake calls his shot like he’s going to swing into next week. Very familiar with that.
The Foreshadowing is STRONG with the one…
And oddly specific.

… castles , not mansions .. an yeah 1600 an older,, and most of the modern , was added to an addon, not in the main area..

And this is why Valerie is included in the planning party: she thinks of things no one else would 😀
😞🤓
🕷I wonder if we’ll ever see Digit in a Spider-Girl costime. 🕸
🤔 😎

Love it! Definitely could see her as SpiderGwen.
Why not Spider-Woman (either of them)?

That comic had been unclicked from the archive for some reason. I just added it back in. Not sure what happened. Thanks for the heads up! =D
