That look on Katherine’s face in the last panel.

Yeah, trying to figure out what that means as well

All I can infer from that face is “pondering” “Hmmm” “Lightbulb” “ephinany””Why didn’t I think of that?” “Why is my daughter a flower pot?. Too many possibilities to narrow down.

It’s an old actor’s trick. When they come in for the close-up, hold no emotion on your face, and the audience will read heaps of emotion into your expression.

BarerMender: are you saying that Kath is old?!?! o_O

This may be the best breaking of the 4th wall I’ve ever seen.

(At least _I_ think it’s breaking the 4th wall …)

nah, i think it’s one of those ‘sideways-glance-with-raised-eyebrows’ kind of thing… to me she seems to be looking down at Pickle as she’s leaving to go get the broom and whatnot to clean up the mess. why the serious look though, hmmm… maybe she’s thinking about probable puberty issues coming up next, what with the near universal panacea that chocolate is for reducing ‘female issues’ to a point, such that males have at least a slight chance to survive unscathed…

      notice i said a SLIGHT chance… 😀

What time jump? Why does everyone keep going on about ‘time jumps’?

      • Hinoron
        July 2, 2016, 1:12 am | #

Because Castella is noticeably older now.

Because between one comic and the next Paul included a page that said “156 weeks later”

it’s been there for at least a week. We’ve had another time skip (no sure how long, though).

        June 28, 2016, 3:32 am | #

Not that one… the new one that wasn’t there 3 panels ago.

It’s been there since Katherine broke up the hockey game.

Paul has said that this is a 3 year skip. When the girls go back to school Atsali will be a senior and Pickle will be in 5th grade.

The one that wasn’t there in the first panel, on the side of her head…

Remember that Katherine’s eyes are reversed… the sclera which is normally white is black for Katherine, same with the pupil, and the iris is white. But it is funny to imagine she’s giving one of those Ralph Cramden ‘What the hey!’ looks at the audience. That’s just my impression.

      June 28, 2016, 10:26 am | # | Reply

We’ve seen close-ups of Katherine’s eyes. The iris is dark. If she opens her eyes very wide, the sclera is white. Those white dots aren’t eye parts, they’re reflections.

But, as i’ve pointed out now and then, there are precisely three in each eye, for a total of six.

The same number as the number of souls that went into her creation.

        And that never changes.

You know, I really like Katgerine’s loft with the artistic square Windows, but they totally look like single-panes Windows so I fear what her winter heating bills are like…

i used to work as a glass-cutter for a few months in a window factory… you would be AMAZED at the things they can do with modern windows… single/double/triple-panes, vacuum or gas-filled between each of the panes, tempered ‘Safety’ glass, custom shapes, custom colors, you name it, I’m sure SOMEBODY can do it… so i wouldn’t worry too much about the windows…

Killjoy, it means she’s thinking; ‘years ago I’d have KILLED to have some excitement in my life. Now that I have two teen Daughters; be careful what you wish for…’

    Sign of a good Mom.
You say “Who made this mess” and the children actually answer instead of clamming up.
It shows you have not overreacted to problems in the past, and given them a path of corrective action (“I’ll clean it up”) that doesn’t lead to punishment or being yelled at.

    Panel 3:
Kath’s lowered eyelids (along with the way her eyes appear to be) make it hard to tell if she’s looking down and to her right – or if it’s just an… illusion‹?› made by the triple-highlights‹?› in her eyes.

Oh come on Kathrine, you used to talk to your plants all the time. Why is it suddenly unnerving to have one talk back. Especially given your youngest adopted daughter.
