Based on Euryale’s natural order comment, I think that creature Phix killed was a demon. Based on what it said to Phix before being killed, it might have been Phix’s own doubt. If it was Phix’s inner demon, then killing it might have been a rite of passage to a higher level in the pecking order…
(And any demon acting as doubt for a Sphinx must have had metaphorical balls of stainless steel!!!)
