Huh? I thought schizophrenia limitet itself to “hearing” voices, not seeing actual things.. Well..we ain’t no shrink, so what do we know..eeehhh.. “I” know.. 😆
Schizophrenia is a complex disease with many symptoms. I have heard it described as; “Believing in the veracity of ones own hallucinations.” I’m not sure that that’s a complete description, but it’s more than just hearing things (voices) or seeing things (little zombie grrls walking on ice) it’s believing that they are real.
I think this is a ‘or what’. Creepy, is just that.. creepy. She’s not decaying and as far as we know, hasn’t been seen by anyone but Shelly (and Tina… sometimes…)
Jin, however, sees and hears people who aren’t there. Now, I’ve been startled by inanimate objects that I knew were there (just not quite… there.). But if something came up and it’s face was rotting off.. Yeah, I’d jump too.
Question is: How will someone with the power to punch through a mountain react. This might get very interesting for Alan in a moment…
I guess it’s “Buds ghost girl” but a bit… hm… crispy.
With a bit of her flesh… uhm… molten, but not entirely blasted away…
And now please help me to get rid of this mental picture.
That’s pretty much what second/third degree burns look like once the skin starts to slough off . . . combined with the slack mandible, roasted eyes, and tiara/bandeau, I’d say we definitely got an “after” of Bud’s nightmare girl.
Remember it’s not just “Bud’s” ghost girl, it’s the Chimera’s ghost girl, the golem girls combine like Voltron to form the Chimera, they all saw that girl be atomized.
It it -NOT- the same as Shelly’s “Conscience”, which were all of Shelly’s demons fused in to one entity permanently linked to Shelly during her vision quest.
If I’m reading it correctly Jin either:
a) has always had issues seeing people that aren’t there and is manifesting that memory as one of her “snowflake people”
or
b) Jin is an actual “Spirit Medium” who doesn’t know or understand what she is (and neither did the other Lanthians like her mother for that matter). The Calendar Machine was used to try to stabilize her from seeing the apparitions but failed itself causing the whole time-loop issue and now that the CM is out of the picture Jin is back at square one “seeing dead people”.
I’m somewhat inclined to think it’s answer B, since Tina picked up on the spirit in Jin’s aura, but I could be missing something.
I might have gone for B as well, but Paul has recently flat out stated the people she sees are hallucinations. Still, whether this one is an hallucination is open to debate.
Because it’s the Chimera what done it, it is a shared experience. All three should have memories of that particular girl.
It seems that Bud and Jin have a particular pang of guilt over her.
Probably, but it’s really rude to ruin this romantic moment. Would it have killed her to delay this unhappy reunion for a while? Yeah, Ok, not killed her exactly …
Come to think of it..I find that a nice thought..If the little girl’s “essence” has moved in, it would ,at least, give the girl another chance at growing-up into a woman ,loving etc. etc. allbeit through Jin..
Hmmm … or maybe not quite inside and she has to follow her everywhere. She’s just now catching up again. No doubt a long walk. She doesn’t even have an ethereal bike. Or maybe it’s in the ethereal shop.
That girl does most certainly not look angry. She looks more like a pet that wants some love, all “please hug me/accept me”. It could be a manifestation of a part of Jin herself that hunkers for love and acceptance, but is misinterpreted by Jin’s fractured psyche..
Either that, or I completely misunderstand the image-language here….
Thanks for the links, SoWhyMe and Fairportfan. They now finally have the meaning I thought…I wonder why this particular young girl stuck with both Bud and Jin, giving Bud nightmares and actually manifesting for Jin…Could she be trying to possess her? Maybe try and wield the power that detroyed her and thus take revenge on the world??
Grr..same here.. “Awaiting moderation”???What gives?
Oh, Got it right now..
Not to repeat myself: To be brutally honest, I am not as cynical as SoWhyMe..I just “fix” the cynics around me with the help of a charming blonde Golem: Superheated Plasma..fixes all
Sad??..Hmm, now You mention it. I let myself getting blinded by the shocking last frame, but, indeed, Jin looks mainly sad in the first 3 frames in the middle.
I guess we now know what can actually scare a golem. I wonder why little Miss Crispy Critter looks like that though? She was vaporized after all, not just disfigured. Not even a body left behind to rot. Seems like, if she has a spiritual “body” at all, it would look like she did originally. But, of course that wouldn’t be quite as creepy.
Maybe she’s just lost and is about to ask for directions to the nearest dear departed pickup station. Or a bathroom.
Demons aren’t really “just in your head” and they certainly don’t dress for the weather. Then there are the Golem Girls…who don’t truly need to dress for the weather, but do.
As for why she looks the way she does…she may get to choose her appearance based on the impression she’s trying to make. 🙂 I don’t see why that would be too difficult.
It’s pretty clear here that Jin still feels too guilty to let herself be happy again.
Her conscience manifests here like the rotten child-corpse-zombie-remains of the girl that got obliterated while looking the chimera in the eyes..
Yet..I wouldn’t be surprised if in coming strips the little girl morphs into a non-rotten sort that just states something like: “It’s allright..You did well, go ahead and love again”
Though rotting, the girl looks as if she’s smiling. Do not forget it’s Jin that has the biggest problems with her guilt. She has consistently felt that she had done too little to save Bud and Brandy, however that contradicts reality
Heck, she even died trying to save them & the world..what more can one ask. Monica states something like that after the emotional scenes where she tells Tepoz that Jin is Tochtli and tells the girls that their nightmares are real events.
Ghosts do not exist in the Wapsi-verse.
Jin hasn’t shown signs of posession the “Paul” way (as in “text in different shade–>see Tina’s inner monologues between her demons and Nudge) Jin’s just loony..an already unstable girl gone off the deep end.
To me it’s her ill-directed conscience, combined with a fear of opening-up and getting betrayed again. Look at her content face in frame 1. The progression of facial expressions are pretty clear as to what happens in her head.. It is not a coincidence that zombie-girl appears the moment Jin let’s herself be happy with a man again. Remember; It was a love that betrayed her.
One thing to keep in mind is that Jin had mental problems before the wall-o-plasma incident. It was her original “out of sync with time” problem that led May to create the calander machine in the first place. It’s main purpose, to May anyway, was to cure Jin of that problem. She just tricked the priests into funding it. Of course, things went bad and the loop started. The point is, I wonder how much of this has to do with that out of sync problem and how much has to do with the mass destruction and death they caused.
Actually, I don’t think it’s safe to say that ghosts don’t exist in the Wapsi-verse. Monica had a discussion about ghosts and communicating with the dead (I think with Tina) pre-Calendar Machine detruction.
Plus, Tina’s the one who saw an angry little girl in the “emptiness” inside Jin…Bud’s the one who drew the conclusion it was the ghost of the girl she dreamt about…
Here we see, once again, what keeps Wapsi readers coming back in eager anticipation of the next comic. Hopefully this leads to additional plot revelations.
SWEET JEEBUS! THAT WAS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A HORROR FILM!
I didn’t see the last panel at first, and my computer kinda jumps down the page, so it was like I was right there doing the same thing Jin was doing. Creepy man, that girl is…*shudders* …creepy.
It must have been especially scary to Jin since she was seated at the time. The girl would have been right there in her face when she reopened her eyes. Within inches of each other, staring eye to eyesocket.
You know without the time restarts, it’s been over 11,000 years if I’m remembering my Wapsi time line correctly. With it, it’s 11,000 + 56*1450 years. LET IT GO, CREEPY PRE-SUMERIAN CHICK!
shes only been able to come out properly cuz the calender machine is broken
before the machine was kinda repressing stuff like that
maybe to the creepy kid its only a month since she died?
(cant recall in the wapsi-verse how much time has passed since they distroyed the machine)
Really? I had it in my head for some reason that the Calendar Machine would reset to before the creation of the Chimera, which would mean that this little girl has only been around for however many years since the meltdown on this cycle.
Jin was the only one in a position to remember the reboots; even the other Golem Girls lost their memories, so it seems the kid would, too. Still, 1450 years…she’ll either let it go or be really pissed.
Off-topic, is there a forum other than the daily commentaries to hash these things out? I’d love to improve the Wikipedia page but would rather be able to work out details before they go up there.
Jin has a hole on the inside, and something haunts the golem; there may be no ghosts but memories will serve til one comes along. “hey Bud, does this hallucination of mine look familiar?” It’s good that some things can’t be shared. Such odd thoughts as the clock approaches the midnight of the soul.
Three AM. The body cycles are at their ebb; most ICU patients die around 3AM according to statistics, and it’s 3 AM, NOT midnight, at which mental patients seen to have their most distress.
Interesting. Many are not aware of the difference between midnight and the mid of the night. The precise time that occured was important to my mother and her circle/coven, she being a Wicca/Satanist kinda gal. The correct time had to be calculated for each night if things were to be done properly. I can’t recall which set of sunrise-sunset times were used (there are 3 as I recall). It may not have made a difference to the final result anyway. Striking at as close as possible to the actual mid of the night for that particular night was important for blood sacrifices. And, of course some nights were much more important than others, especially on the Equinoxes and Solstices. Throw in planetary alignments and the like to make additional offset adjustments and things got really complicated.
I’ve worked at hospitals for over 20 years; ‘they’ say that there isn’t REALLY any more wierdness on a full moon; but you’ll never hear that from someone who works ER. There are other odd stats (that I can’t bring to mind right now); can’t say anything one way or another about witches or satanists…….
I suffer from Paranoid Schizophrenia, and I know how that kinda feels.
*answering a few comments above*
Normally schizophrenics are plagued by auditory hallucinations, but there IS a good degree (that varies) of visual hallucinations at times, ive only had the mildest of the visual, auditory….not so much.
*Note to Pablo* Harsh nightmares are also common, were for me, imagine waking up repeatedly in your dreams screaming only to realize the nightmare wont end…those are killer 😉
Love this Jin story arc, really enjoy reading it and seeing it unfold! Keep it up! 😀
I pondered before what would happen if Jin was confronted by something horrible and threatening that she didn’t was real or not due to her mental illness; I never thought of what would happen if she saw something she KNEW couldn’t be real but was more terrifying than she could stand…
Shelly’s Conscience versus the Little Girl, no holds barred, no time limit, let’s see who wins!
hmm and todays comic is the point where i ask myself: where is jins mother? I mean i wonder if she is just traveling the world anew without noticing how hurt her child is?
Awesome expressions on Jin as she tries to shake the apparition out of her head… “you’re not there! dammit, you’re not there! AAAH! You’re still there!” Really, reeaaly creepy, Paul. 😀
Yep. See my post near the top today with a link to the “Tina’s scary hands” page where it is suggested that something has moved into the “empty place” in Jin’s psyche that Tina had sensed.
Ah yes, a very critical series of comics, thanks. This one: http://wapsisquare.com/comic/psychological-imperfections/
indicates shen now knows she won’t be human because of the calendar machine’s “fixing” and why. Going back to how she was before the machine started is pointed out, thus the acting more like an 18 year old.
… and Jin has officially gone bye-bye…;)
“Hello! I’m schizophrenic, and so am I!”
Huh? I thought schizophrenia limitet itself to “hearing” voices, not seeing actual things.. Well..we ain’t no shrink, so what do we know..eeehhh.. “I” know.. 😆

hth
M
A pharma company put together a simulation of a schizophrenic episode based on feedback from sufferers. It’s kinda scary.
Schizophrenic Episode Simulation
I’ve often wonder if ventriloquists are schizophrenics who managed to make a living from it?
Imagine a schizo ventriloquist..That’s not just a wooden puppet that talks, but a complete community :O
There was a Batman villain like that. The dummy was the dominate personality and a crime boss while the ventriloquist was a shy wimpy flunkie.
Oh, there was someone like that in the Ace Attorney series!
so, when i see a Little Zombie Girl Walking over a frozen lake but dont believe it is real, then I am not schizophrenic?
“So how many people were at the Schizophrenic’s anonymous meeting?”
“I lost count after the first guy introduced all his imaginary friends.”
Aaactually I think this might be the little girl that we all presumed was haunting Jin (the one who saw the blast coming). 😀
Stupid undead. Always ruining the moment.
Okay – is this Bud’s ghost girl … or Creepy … or who?
Or what?
I think this is a ‘or what’. Creepy, is just that.. creepy. She’s not decaying and as far as we know, hasn’t been seen by anyone but Shelly (and Tina… sometimes…)

Question is: How will someone with the power to punch through a mountain react. This might get very interesting for Alan in a moment…
The little girl who Haunts Shelly is nicknamed “Connie”.
It is true she’s Shelly’s personal demon conscience, but she is able to visit other paranormals.
I guess it’s “Buds ghost girl” but a bit… hm… crispy.
With a bit of her flesh… uhm… molten, but not entirely blasted away…
And now please help me to get rid of this mental picture.

So much for the warm fuzzies…
Look at the headband… it is the little girl that got blown up in the big firey boom
Yeah – at first i thought that was a pair of goggles, and i was trying to figure out why.
Yep. http://wapsisquare.com/comic/dontwanttoremember/
Oddly she seems to be smiling. But isn’t that supposed to be attached to Bud?
Maybe she’s related to Jin.
Time for the poke test!
Here we go.
Tina thought that Jin had an empty space in the core of her being, but then she realised that something was there.
And, in the next day’s strip, Bud suggests that the little girl in her nightmare may have “moved in”.
Not a comforting thought…
Come to think of it..I find that a nice thought..If the little girl’s “essence” has moved in, it would ,at least, give the girl another chance at growing-up into a woman ,loving etc. etc. allbeit through Jin..
Yes, I am a positive sorts..
I can cure this positive attitude problem you seem to have. No charge.
Meh..I just cure the cynics around me with the help of some explosives. Explosives fix all….. No more cynics, happy me…
It’s a very angry essence…
Hmmm … or maybe not quite inside and she has to follow her everywhere. She’s just now catching up again. No doubt a long walk. She doesn’t even have an ethereal bike. Or maybe it’s in the ethereal shop.
If it’s indeed that very angry little girl Tina saw, Yes ,well, basically we’re fracked then..i.e. The Wapsiverse is off to a new plasma-wave..
I’ve taken another good look at that last frame.
That girl does most certainly not look angry. She looks more like a pet that wants some love, all “please hug me/accept me”. It could be a manifestation of a part of Jin herself that hunkers for love and acceptance, but is misinterpreted by Jin’s fractured psyche..
Either that, or I completely misunderstand the image-language here….

sooooo sleeeeeeepyyyyyyyy…….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
^^Hmmm…forget a character in your email, and that happens…
Grr..same here.. “Awaiting moderation”???What gives?
Oh, Got it right now..
Not to repeat myself: To be brutally honest, I am not as cynical as SoWhyMe..I just “fix” the cynics around me with the help of a charming blonde Golem: Superheated Plasma..fixes all
Isn’t there a saying that goes, “Time makes cynics of us all?” All you have to do is wait.
Besides, I’m not a cynic, I’m a skeptic with a bad attitude.
Interesting thought.
I sense an emotional rollercoaster for Jin at the horizon, like Bud and her “snit” in the link You provided..
Hopefully Jin will be able to forgive herself for not having been able to wholly reign-in the combined anger, hate and fear of the chimera.
Little girl has been taking out her frustrations on Jin’s Psyche. This explains so much without explaining anything.
Jin can’t get a brake!
Brakes on skidoo worked pretty well though…
……but brakes doesn’t work hardly at all when the ice is ten feet thick.
2 words: carbide. studs
As always, the expressions and art work are excellent, Too bad it seems so sad.
Maybe she’s just lost and is about to ask for directions to the nearest dear departed pickup station. Or a bathroom.
Remember, this is all in Jin’s head.
Not so sure about this one.
Eeep! Don’t.Do.That…
It HAS to be in her head. Miss Crispy isn’t wearing ANY outdoor gear, and that ain’t a beach in the background.
Major mood killer.
JEEBUSS!! that last frame made me jump like Jin..
It’s pretty clear here that Jin still feels too guilty to let herself be happy again.

Heck, she even died trying to save them & the world..what more can one ask. Monica states something like that after the emotional scenes where she tells Tepoz that Jin is Tochtli and tells the girls that their nightmares are real events.
See my earlier comment – unfortunately, this may be an angry ghost that has sort-of possessed Jin…
nah..does not compute.
Time for poke-test, as already stated.

All still in the realm of possible here. 🙂
I have to agree. Ghost girl looks like she’s smiling and going “Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii :-D”
Here we see, once again, what keeps Wapsi readers coming back in eager anticipation of the next comic. Hopefully this leads to additional plot revelations.
Ditto!
holy crudball
its the ring but in comic form!
SWEET JEEBUS! THAT WAS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A HORROR FILM!

Am I mis-remembering?
Nope I think you’re right. I think it happens right before the disappearance of Jin’s mother, which is well before the creation of the chimera.
Late addition: we’ve got the Wapsi Square wiki, but that’s only a stub. Still, better there than the Wikipedia page.
Am I the only one thinking…
AWWWW…. she got half of her face melted off by a chimera. Isn’t she cute!
It’s the childish smile that’s highly cute.
Luckily the rotten flesh will be frozen, so the smell won’t be too bad 😆
yes! She she’s going “Hiiiiiiiiiii!”
Just when is the midnight of the soul?
About seventeen hours before the teatime of the soul.
Three AM. The body cycles are at their ebb; most ICU patients die around 3AM according to statistics, and it’s 3 AM, NOT midnight, at which mental patients seen to have their most distress.
“seem”
Hrm..used wrong e-mail… no gravatar..grrr
Emergency poit outta there in 5 … 4 … 3 …
FWOOOOM!! *sound of sublimating humans* shiiit! Too late..Well..Here we go again for another 1400-something-year cycle.. 😆
(weakly) Good God.
GAH!
Keep it up! 😀
In the “cold toes” incident, when Jin woke up with a scream, the first thing Alan asked was if it was “another nightmare”…
I do not think there are enough hugs to help Jin deal with what she is experiencing right now.
Certainly not from her…
Darn mouth breathers always creep me out too.
HOLY CARDIAC ARREST!!!
Good art.
YIKES!!!!
(and something about that mouth is just creeptastic)
Boy, i thought Bud went in for some serious boots.
(Just noticed in the last panel.)
?? Jin’s boots look like average snow clompers to me. I’m not sure what’s so impressive…
We don’t go in for boots like that down here in the South…
*Gibbers for a minute*
Yeah so doesn’t Alan’s face remind you of a llama? or a cuddly something so I don’t have to look to the right?
Not sure about Alan looking like a llama, but he does look content in panel one
hmm and todays comic is the point where i ask myself: where is jins mother? I mean i wonder if she is just traveling the world anew without noticing how hurt her child is?
He reminds me of the beginning of a transition of human to wolfman.
Since the whole enchilada was started by Mayahuel creating the caledar machine to help Tochtli, I assume she is pursuing other methods of helping her.
Darn! That comment was supposed to go with Danzier’s, above.
Oh great, now I placed the clarification in a comment of it’s own! Curse you lack-of-delete function!
These comments are like the calendar machine? No editing or partial deletions–there’s only a system-wide reset, when the strip goes to a new site…
Does that mean we’ll have to do this fifty-something more times?
only every 1500 years 😉 sooo we have some time and nothing to worry about
Awesome expressions on Jin as she tries to shake the apparition out of her head… “you’re not there! dammit, you’re not there! AAAH! You’re still there!” Really, reeaaly creepy, Paul. 😀
Is this conscience being weird again?
Is this what the mean by saying this is a wide awake nightmare?
No – this is the little girl who got vapourised by the chimera all those years ago.
…Wait, isn’t that the little girl Bud remembered way back?
Yep. See my post near the top today with a link to the “Tina’s scary hands” page where it is suggested that something has moved into the “empty place” in Jin’s psyche that Tina had sensed.
Her’s the link – read it and the next few days (up to Shelly’s use of an IED for a Hollywood-style “meet cute” with Officer Buns…)
