Huh? I thought schizophrenia limitet itself to “hearing” voices, not seeing actual things.. Well..we ain’t no shrink, so what do we know..eeehhh.. “I” know.. 😆

Schizophrenia is a complex disease with many symptoms. I have heard it described as; “Believing in the veracity of ones own hallucinations.” I’m not sure that that’s a complete description, but it’s more than just hearing things (voices) or seeing things (little zombie grrls walking on ice) it’s believing that they are real.

Okay – is this Bud’s ghost girl … or Creepy … or who?

    Or what?

    • StJason
      March 7, 2011, 5:28 am | # | Reply

I think this is a ‘or what’. Creepy, is just that.. creepy. She’s not decaying and as far as we know, hasn’t been seen by anyone but Shelly (and Tina… sometimes…)

Jin, however, sees and hears people who aren’t there. Now, I’ve been startled by inanimate objects that I knew were there (just not quite… there.). But if something came up and it’s face was rotting off.. Yeah, I’d jump too.

Question is: How will someone with the power to punch through a mountain react. This might get very interesting for Alan in a moment…

The little girl who Haunts Shelly is nicknamed “Connie”.

It is true she’s Shelly’s personal demon conscience, but she is able to visit other paranormals.

      I guess it’s “Buds ghost girl” but a bit… hm… crispy.

And now please help me to get rid of this mental picture.

That’s pretty much what second/third degree burns look like once the skin starts to slough off . . . combined with the slack mandible, roasted eyes, and tiara/bandeau, I’d say we definitely got an “after” of Bud’s nightmare girl.

    • Dauric
      March 7, 2011, 9:14 am | # | Reply

Remember it’s not just “Bud’s” ghost girl, it’s the Chimera’s ghost girl, the golem girls combine like Voltron to form the Chimera, they all saw that girl be atomized.

It it -NOT- the same as Shelly’s “Conscience”, which were all of Shelly’s demons fused in to one entity permanently linked to Shelly during her vision quest.

If I’m reading it correctly Jin either:
      a) has always had issues seeing people that aren’t there and is manifesting that memory as one of her “snowflake people”

      or

      b) Jin is an actual “Spirit Medium” who doesn’t know or understand what she is (and neither did the other Lanthians like her mother for that matter). The Calendar Machine was used to try to stabilize her from seeing the apparitions but failed itself causing the whole time-loop issue and now that the CM is out of the picture Jin is back at square one “seeing dead people”.

I’m somewhat inclined to think it’s answer B, since Tina picked up on the spirit in Jin’s aura, but I could be missing something.

      • SoWhyMe
        March 7, 2011, 11:06 am | #

I might have gone for B as well, but Paul has recently flat out stated the people she sees are hallucinations. Still, whether this one is an hallucination is open to debate.

Because it’s the Chimera what done it, it is a shared experience. All three should have memories of that particular girl.
It seems that Bud and Jin have a particular pang of guilt over her.

      • SoWhyMe
        March 7, 2011, 12:29 am | #

Probably, but it’s really rude to ruin this romantic moment. Would it have killed her to delay this unhappy reunion for a while? Yeah, Ok, not killed her exactly …

        Here we go.

Tina thought that Jin had an empty space in the core of her being, but then she realised that something was there.

And, in the next day’s strip, Bud suggests that the little girl in her nightmare may have “moved in”.

        Not a comforting thought…

      • Jay-Em
        March 7, 2011, 12:37 am | #

Come to think of it..I find that a nice thought..If the little girl’s “essence” has moved in, it would ,at least, give the girl another chance at growing-up into a woman ,loving etc. etc. allbeit through Jin..

        March 7, 2011, 4:02 am | #

I’ve taken another good look at that last frame.

That girl does most certainly not look angry. She looks more like a pet that wants some love, all “please hug me/accept me”. It could be a manifestation of a part of Jin herself that hunkers for love and acceptance, but is misinterpreted by Jin’s fractured psyche..

Either that, or I completely misunderstand the image-language here….

I guess we now know what can actually scare a golem. I wonder why little Miss Crispy Critter looks like that though? She was vaporized after all, not just disfigured. Not even a body left behind to rot. Seems like, if she has a spiritual “body” at all, it would look like she did originally. But, of course that wouldn’t be quite as creepy.

Maybe she’s just lost and is about to ask for directions to the nearest dear departed pickup station. Or a bathroom.

Demons aren’t really “just in your head” and they certainly don’t dress for the weather. Then there are the Golem Girls…who don’t truly need to dress for the weather, but do.

As for why she looks the way she does…she may get to choose her appearance based on the impression she’s trying to make. 🙂 I don’t see why that would be too difficult.

JEEBUSS!! that last frame made me jump like Jin..

It’s pretty clear here that Jin still feels too guilty to let herself be happy again.
Her conscience manifests here like the rotten child-corpse-zombie-remains of the girl that got obliterated while looking the chimera in the eyes..

Yet..I wouldn’t be surprised if in coming strips the little girl morphs into a non-rotten sort that just states something like: “It’s allright..You did well, go ahead and love again”

Though rotting, the girl looks as if she’s smiling. Do not forget it’s Jin that has the biggest problems with her guilt. She has consistently felt that she had done too little to save Bud and Brandy, however that contradicts reality

Heck, she even died trying to save them & the world..what more can one ask. Monica states something like that after the emotional scenes where she tells Tepoz that Jin is Tochtli and tells the girls that their nightmares are real events.

See my earlier comment – unfortunately, this may be an angry ghost that has sort-of possessed Jin…

      • Jay-Em
        March 7, 2011, 12:45 am | #

        nah..does not compute.

Ghosts do not exist in the Wapsi-verse.
Jin hasn’t shown signs of posession the “Paul” way (as in “text in different shade–>see Tina’s inner monologues between her demons and Nudge) Jin’s just loony..an already unstable girl gone off the deep end.

To me it’s her ill-directed conscience, combined with a fear of opening-up and getting betrayed again. Look at her content face in frame 1. The progression of facial expressions are pretty clear as to what happens in her head.. It is not a coincidence that zombie-girl appears the moment Jin let’s herself be happy with a man again. Remember; It was a love that betrayed her.

Time for poke-test, as already stated.

      • SoWhyMe
        March 7, 2011, 1:00 am | #

One thing to keep in mind is that Jin had mental problems before the wall-o-plasma incident. It was her original “out of sync with time” problem that led May to create the calander machine in the first place. It’s main purpose, to May anyway, was to cure Jin of that problem. She just tricked the priests into funding it. Of course, things went bad and the loop started. The point is, I wonder how much of this has to do with that out of sync problem and how much has to do with the mass destruction and death they caused.

      • Julie
        March 7, 2011, 1:10 pm | #

Actually, I don’t think it’s safe to say that ghosts don’t exist in the Wapsi-verse. Monica had a discussion about ghosts and communicating with the dead (I think with Tina) pre-Calendar Machine detruction.

Plus, Tina’s the one who saw an angry little girl in the “emptiness” inside Jin…Bud’s the one who drew the conclusion it was the ghost of the girl she dreamt about…

All still in the realm of possible here. 🙂

        March 7, 2011, 6:52 pm | #

Jin was the only one in a position to remember the reboots; even the other Golem Girls lost their memories, so it seems the kid would, too. Still, 1450 years…she’ll either let it go or be really pissed.

Jin has a hole on the inside, and something haunts the golem; there may be no ghosts but memories will serve til one comes along. “hey Bud, does this hallucination of mine look familiar?” It’s good that some things can’t be shared. Interesting. Many are not aware of the difference between midnight and the mid of the night. The precise time that occured was important to my mother and her circle/coven, she being a Wicca/Satanist kinda gal. The correct time had to be calculated for each night if things were to be done properly. I can’t recall which set of sunrise-sunset times were used (there are 3 as I recall). It may not have made a difference to the final result anyway. Striking at as close as possible to the actual mid of the night for that particular night was important for blood sacrifices. And, of course some nights were much more important than others, especially on the Equinoxes and Solstices. Throw in planetary alignments and the like to make additional offset adjustments and things got really complicated.

I suffer from Paranoid Schizophrenia, and I know how that kinda feels.

    *answering a few comments above*

Normally schizophrenics are plagued by auditory hallucinations, but there IS a good degree (that varies) of visual hallucinations at times, ive only had the mildest of the visual, auditory….not so much.

*Note to Pablo* Harsh nightmares are also common, were for me, imagine waking up repeatedly in your dreams screaming only to realize the nightmare wont end…those are killer 😉

Love this Jin story arc, really enjoy reading it and seeing it unfold! Keep it up! 😀

In the “cold toes” incident, when Jin woke up with a scream, the first thing Alan asked was if it was “another nightmare”…

I do not think there are enough hugs to help Jin deal with what she is experiencing right now.

    HOLY CARDIAC ARREST!!!

    Good art.

I pondered before what would happen if Jin was confronted by something horrible and threatening that she didn’t was real or not due to her mental illness; I never thought of what would happen if she saw something she KNEW couldn’t be real but was more terrifying than she could stand…

(Just noticed in the last panel.)

?? Jin’s boots look like average snow clompers to me. I’m not sure what’s so impressive…

We don’t go in for boots like that down here in the South…

Yeah so doesn’t Alan’s face remind you of a llama? or a cuddly something so I don’t have to look to the right?

hmm and todays comic is the point where i ask myself: where is jins mother? I mean i wonder if she is just traveling the world anew without noticing how hurt her child is?

Since the whole enchilada was started by Mayahuel creating the caledar machine to help Tochtli, I assume she is pursuing other methods of helping her.

These comments are like the calendar machine? No editing or partial deletions–there’s only a system-wide reset, when the strip goes to a new site…

Yep. See my post near the top today with a link to the “Tina’s scary hands” page where it is suggested that something has moved into the “empty place” in Jin’s psyche that Tina had sensed.

Her’s the link – read it and the next few days (up to Shelly’s use of an IED for a Hollywood-style “meet cute” with Officer Buns…)

Ah yes, a very critical series of comics, thanks. This one:
        http://wapsisquare.com/comic/psychological-imperfections/
indicates shen now knows she won’t be human because of the calendar machine’s “fixing” and why. Going back to how she was before the machine started is pointed out, thus the acting more like an 18 year old.
