Never saw Kath with fully black eyes before. I just have to wonder if this means somethong or is just scenic.

      It feels symbolic to me.

She’s looking back into the darkness of who she once was. Of what happened to her. Of what she was (and is) capable of doing.

That’s a darker and a deeper well than we’ve ever seen in her before. It’s only right that her eyes show it.

This is what occurred to me as well. We only saw her black eyes when she appeared as the “weird spider girl,” before she broke out of her ptsd. Nice comment.

When Elder Gods go to sleep, they check under the bed for Katherine.

“Demons run when a good woman goes to war…”

Note to self never pick a fight with Katherine…

And if they don’t run, Monica will make them.

Well, she is the amalgamation of 6 unborn babies; she has 6 sets of irises merged together.
When Katherine first appeared, her eyes were almost totally black.

      They weren’t totally flat, though.

Why am I thinking in the second panel that’s Kath’s demons peeking out. Daughter hugs to the rescue bring Kath back to the present.

      Opps meant third panel

Always thought in the past Kathrine had close relationships with spiders. Thus the eyes being a near exact analog of what spiders eyes look like.

I always wanted to see Kath’s eyes without the highlights. Pretty scary.

During the time I’ve been reading Wapsi Square, I’ve repeatedly been impressed by Paul’s ability to pull off what we call “bootlegger turns” – sudden changes in direction or mood which open up whole new depths to the story.

    He just did it again.

Kath was already an amazing, complex character. This new revelation about that terrible trauma in the desert adds a whole new angle to her story, and to her relationship with her adopted daughters.

I wonder if she ever told anyone about this before… even Oscar her betta… or whether she carried the memory of it silently within, the way Monica did.

Per her self description, many years after her introduction, Kath’s irises (that’s the coloured part of the eye, if you forgot) take up her whole eyeball (or at least all the visible portions). “Eyes are windows to the soul” as the expression goes, and she was a strange fusion of 6 unborn children into one.
Can’t truthfully say what colour her all-iris eyes are, but presumably very dark, if not actually black (which additionally would make her pupil virtually invisible to anyone else also).

After the eyes, I next noticed that in the last panel, Kath looks younger, almost juvenile. They could be near-contemporaries. They have both scared themselves with terrible destructive potential, and now they comfort each other on equal footing.

We all have our demons, even in RL. Paras are able to portray their ‘flip-side’ more poignantly than Humans. Humans can’t deal with weakness which is how they got so adept at hiding their demons.
