Well, she didn’t say she backed over her wrist with a car. If she was driving a motorcycle – (flashs on an image of Tina on a monster chopper roaring down the road, wind sweeping her hair back and leathers hugging her body) – uh, what was I talking about? Oh yes. If she was trying to park a bike, and fell off and it rolled back… It’d be a complicated and unlikely sequence, but this IS Tina we’re talking about.
Actually, there were times i was working on my Sprite that, had the handbrake slipped, i might have run over my wrist while still technically still inside the car.
I once had to help a man who’d managed to park a heavy garbage truck on his own hand. He’d parked on an icy slope, and wanted to place a rock in front of a wheel to make sure the truck didn’t slip. It DID slip, just when his hand was in front of the wheel. Then it stopped, with his hand trapped beneath the wheel. He was stuck there for 15 minutes, and his hand did not look good afterwards.
Well, I’m guessing lifting might have been involved somehow, but…
As to running over yourself, I think it “technically” has been done before, but the only thing I can recall clearly was an old story of a farmer who accidentally fell off his tractor while tending a field. The rear wheels ran over and broke his legs, but the steering wheel was turned slightly. While he tried to drag himself away, the engine turned around and ran over him again, before the arc widened enough to sink the thing in a ditch before it could loop around for a third run. He survived.
My sister’s ex-boyfriend ran himself over — he left the car in gear, got out, and went around in front of it…as it slooooowly rolled forward. Knocked him on his ass and ran over his hand before my sister could get herself into the driver’s seat and knock it into park. 😀 He was a jerkwad anyhow, heh-heh.
It just makes you forget, nothing to it really. Kinda puts you outta it for 5 minutes and then your back. I had it a couple years ago when I snaped my leg. They gave it too me, then reset my leg. After I came too about 5 minutes later, I said ” So when are you gonna set my leg?”
“Propofol provides loss of awareness for short diagnostic tests and surgical procedures, sleep at the beginning of surgery, and supplements other types of general anesthetics.”
Never rely on a mass marketing engine like Marvel to bother to acquaint themselves with the reality of an entity from mythology. They’ll claim poetic license, and if they’ve ‘acquainted’ themselves to Loki’s interest, they’re welcome to it. *feral grin*
Step 1 – Discover a mutual friend is actually a huge threat to you genetically
Step 2 – Find out you two are “on the same page” and therefore somehow not a threat
Step 3 – Find out the person you’re taking care of was worried about you
Step 4 – Suddenly break your own arm for absolutely no reason whatsoever
Step 5 – Act like nothing happened
Step 6 – ????
Step 7 – Profit?
And a “classic” meme was born with the Underpants Gnomes But it’s not all that far fetched. The Dot-Com bubble burst came about because so many web-based startups followed that very model.
Yea, my thoughts too, more or less. I could see her doing something like this to demonstrate to Phix that she’s not a threat but I haven’t a clue as to how it would do that.
If anything it’d be more likely to convince me that she’s not all there upstairs.
it’s obvious… Tina overheard M and Amanda talking about her having this “bad feeling” and rather than having to go into explanations over just “why” Monica’s having that reaction at all, Tina decided to fake out Amanda with an injury that Monica “predicted”… thus Amanda is now thrown off track as to why they came back after Phix was so intent on having them leave in the first place… i am assuming that Tina hid the actual act of breaking her arm from Amanda at least, and probably both of them, at least until after they got to the hospital, in order to keep up the spoof, to keep the correct facial expressions and stress levels up, then she told Monica what REALLY happened to her, just prior to panel 1.
Yes, Tina! Injuring yourself just to have a particularly scary “Big Lipped Alligator Moment” is not only not cool, but it’s also hurtful to those who DO care about you.
Indeed Fairportfan. Random internet memes may be cringeworthy but there’s no need to come right out and tell someone to piss off over it.
Knowing my luck, though, somebody will likely now tell me that I not only misunderstood your comment, but also Jordinyc’s comment, Ladywolf’s comment, the definition of meme and of existence itself.
I’m sorry guys, really, I didn’t mean to piss anyone off. And I’ll get the second round at least. Call me nuttier than a Thai kitchen but I care about these characters, and the whole busted arm thing really seemed to come straight out of nowhere, was way over the top, didn’t make any sense, and was quite possibly on it’s way to never being spoken of again as if it never happened. And that kinda .. pissed me off a little i guess.
The truth is I should friggin know better. I’ve been reading this for YEARS and I know that whatever the explanation is, it’ll surface at some point and at the very least fit the scenario and their crazy mixed up universe. The continuity of Wapsi blows my socks off on a regular basis.
Dr Who fans: I had a similar reaction to “The Pandorica Opens.” “Big Bang” WAY more than made up for it, you are gonna freaking LOVE IT!!!
Monica had a really “bad feeling” about Tina, we know Tina was potentially in danger from Phix and Monica sensed that. Tina has more secrets in the basement and those may be more dangerous than we think. I think Tina injured herself so she could confirm Monica’s bad feeling and distract her from whatever is in the basement. She’s trying to protect Monica from her secrets in the basement and any potential negativity toward Phix if Monica found out that Phix is a danger to Tina.
Doh! I read the first one as “Gives Phix a cyber cookie.”
Anyway, I think we know (in general terms) why Tina seemed so reluctant to go into the basement and perhaps why she was worried for Monica. It wasn’t the darkness — Monica just didn’t know where the light switch was at.
Yet it seems odd that Tina didn’t at least yell down at Monica and try to warn her in a least a vague way. Perhaps it is something that is very bad somehow, but not immediately dangerous.
I’ll go a step further and say we might have already seen what was dangerous.
Monica projected a bit of her own background into her experience in the basement, she assumed that what she saw was a “muñeca para el Dia de los Muertos.” With Tina’s known background / history we, as observers, found Monica’s statement entirely reasonable (and kind of cool in a morbid way).
Unfortunately, much of Tina’s history, before and after her ‘death’, remains unknown. I, for one, believe that the ‘doll’ might not be as easily explained as Monica thinks.
Tina has managed to effectively distract everyone from thinking further about it.
Tina seems to be biting her lip in the last panel. What’s that about?
I think it’s a reaction to what Monica is saying. Normally that’s a sign of worry and Tina looks worried. Is it because Monica sounds like she isn’t going to do anything (full day of boring boredom) or is it because Monica will stay with Amanda all day or is it because Monica now says that she’ll go to the museum, rather than the library or the annex?
Whatever, Tina seemed to be upbeat until she heard what Monica said.
Oh, one of those awkward moments. I had considered that, but Tina seemed to just change subjects in the past.. Of course, she’s still a bit rattled and not at work.
So, now we are left with Monica not going to the library to research Jin’s problem. Instead, she will have to do normal museum work because Amanda will be with her. At least that’s what Monica is thinking. We also don’t know what, if anything, Tina saw in Amanda’s aura that made Tina so eager to have Amanda accompany Monica.
Another thought occurred to me: Did Tina just make up the story she just told Amanda about breaking her arm, but was too loopy (from the drugs) to realize how bad of a story it was until she said it? We’ll probably never know for sure.
Reminds me of the “Twit of the Year” sketch from Monty Python. One contestant runs himself over with his own car, and although dead, he still has a chance to win.
Tina is so cute in a “not quite on this planet” kind of way.
To what “same page” is Tina referring? The page where they are all in agreement (now, anyway) that Amanda should not be privy to the supernatural goings on? Especially Phix’s library?
or if you move the wheel with a wing while pushing the throttle with the tail when trying to examine under the car, but I recommend only doing it if you can take the pressure of the roll over or properly lift the car so the wheels spin free.
I just realised what the doll is for, and I gotta say it’s some of the more subtle pieces of plot development I’ve seen, not to mention a higher quality writing than I’ve seen outside a bestselling novel.
Could be, but it may be that it’s not a regular thing. Tina may not be there at the present time. Perhaps she is trying to lure Tina back with it To inhabit it, if only for a day.
Reading the “fridge logic” article. i have to say Hitchcock wasn’t as sneaky as he thought – the first time i saw “Vertigo” as an adult (previously saw it once on teevee at age twelve or so), i picked up on that one as soon as it happened.
For what it’s worth, regarding Tina’s past injury, I once ran over myself while driving a (small) Ford tractor, an 8N. I broke my collarbone in the process. I won’t go into the details of how I accomplished this feat, but it involved failing to take the tractor out of gear while dismounting at the same time.
Having said that, Tina breaking her wrist while parallel parking doesn’t sound at all strange.
I just realized a way to break your arm parallel parking, hit the curb at a bad angle and have the steering wheel kick back while holding it through the spokes. Similar to what happens in open-wheel car racing where they hit the wall and the steering kickback breaks thumbs, or removes them.
Very good. That actually sounds rational. I wonder if that would happen with power steering though since there is a large disconnect between the force on the wheels and the steering wheel?
Still she said she backed over her wrist so that might not apply in this case.
I actually used to work with a lady that ran over herself. She had forgotten to put her car in park when she got out, tried to jump back in and got pulled under. She was a mess for like a month.
I think I figured it out. Provided the incident happened at some point when the ground was slippery and possibly parallel parking on a hill. She may have forgotten the parking brake, slipped, and the car rolled over her arm
Last panel? Yeah, I’m full of smiles now. 😀
As Amanda visualises the implications of that…
You mean as Amanda TRIES.
LMAO! Amanda’s trying to figure out how it is possible to run over your own wrist…
Heheh . Yep .
As am I…
Well, she didn’t say she backed over her wrist with a car.
To quote Tucker (and Private Jimmy) from Red vs Blue, “That doesn’t seem physically possible!”
Mine was similar. *snerk*
Hrrm Did she fall out of her car at some point while parking? She must be a horrid driver.
Running over one’s WRIST while parallel parking? Tina must either be a phenomenally bad driver, or a god-like one.
~D.
…or Making Stuff Up in order to Fuck With Amanda’s Mind…
I’ll take that for $200, Alex.
OK … I’m trying to picture that … uh … urg … omf … does anyone have an aspirin?
Actually, there were times i was working on my Sprite that, had the handbrake slipped, i might have run over my wrist while still technically still inside the car.
I’m sure Amanda’s thinking the same thing…
I once had to help a man who’d managed to park a heavy garbage truck on his own hand. He’d parked on an icy slope, and wanted to place a rock in front of a wheel to make sure the truck didn’t slip. It DID slip, just when his hand was in front of the wheel. Then it stopped, with his hand trapped beneath the wheel. He was stuck there for 15 minutes, and his hand did not look good afterwards.
Tina is a foxy lady. Uh, demon. Uh, legion. Uh… oh, hqiz, you know what I mean!
so, i’ve been looking online, but i can’t find the definition of hqiz. anyone mind giving me a clue?
only if you can present a certificate of insanity and proof of fully paid possession insurance from a church accredited for exorcisms.
Loving Amanda’s “Wait a damn minute. . .” look in the last panel!
I think it’s more of a “This chic is wacked out look”
I think this chick is whack out. Stoned. High on painkillers. Just at the edge of coherent speech, and over the edge of coherent thought.
Tina has a brand-new chain to yank…
Amanda’s Mind is Blown
Must be. I notice Amanda is still staring at the area where Tina was, unaware she has moved on.
Okay, I have known some pretty bad drivers, but I do not think I have ever known of one who was so bad, that person ran over him/herself.
Well, I’m guessing lifting might have been involved somehow, but…
As to running over yourself, I think it “technically” has been done before, but the only thing I can recall clearly was an old story of a farmer who accidentally fell off his tractor while tending a field. While he tried to drag himself away, the engine turned around and ran over him again, before the arc widened enough to sink the thing in a ditch before it could loop around for a third run. He survived.
Perhaps she leaned way out if the car, all the way down in order to look under it to see how far the curb was, fell out and it rolled over her wrist.
Hence the orgin of the expression
“a harrowing experience”.
The harrow is farm machinery.
You wouldn’t want one to go over you.
My sister’s ex-boyfriend ran himself over — he left the car in gear, got out, and went around in front of it…as it slooooowly rolled forward. Knocked him on his ass and ran over his hand before my sister could get herself into the driver’s seat and knock it into park. 😀 He was a jerkwad anyhow, heh-heh.
oooooooooooooKAY!
I’ll have whatever drugs they gave Tina.
http://www.drugs.com/propofol.html 🙂
XD ahhh, those sound nice.
Do we really want Tina to have loss of awareness?
Tina seems awfully alert, is this one of those anesthetics that wear off really fast?
From personal experience, you can be kind of punchy and talkative after the dose starts to metabolize in your system.
I’ve long suspected that Tina is a Trickster figure.
Sure, but she’s got to keep it low-key.
Ahhh…my brain is bleeding….
In Egypt, you could also say she’s Set in her ways, but I like your reference better…
More like she’s Set after her ways. Remember, time stopped.
Bah-ha!! Makes me think of one of my favorite books…I really need to read American Gods again…
A most excellent book that I heartily endorse for re-reads…
There’s a difference between “Trickster” and “Jackass”
Tell that to the Marvel writers…
Got a particular character and/or writer in mind?
(Personally, my take on that sort of thing isn’t Marvel-related – it’s Ambush Bug.)
The portrayal of Loki, who is supposed to be about thought over battle, and mischief, which is why he was always so hated.
In Marvel, he’s downright evil, taking things personally, and, well, being an all-around jackass
Never rely on a mass marketing engine like Marvel to bother to acquaint themselves with the reality of an entity from mythology. They’ll claim poetic license, and if they’ve ‘acquainted’ themselves to Loki’s interest, they’re welcome to it. *feral grin*
It’s easy. Tina shared some of her demons with the Muñeca para el dia de los muertos and they were driving while when they backed over Tina’s wrist.
Wouldn’t she be referring to when her ward was killed by a bus and she took her identity?
Although I think I may even be confused.
When Tina was in that accident she wasn’t running a coffee shop – she didn’t even reside in the Minneapolis area at the time.
Did this business model come from the underpants gnomes?
And a “classic” meme was born with the Underpants Gnomes But it’s not all that far fetched. The Dot-Com bubble burst came about because so many web-based startups followed that very model.
Thanks for that link, BTW.

For what it’s worth, Tina You are lucky to have good friends who care about you, but you got to stop injuring yourself. That is so not cool.
Yes, Tina! Injuring yourself just to have a particularly scary “Big Lipped Alligator Moment” is not only not cool, but it’s also hurtful to those who DO care about you.
You could, perhaps, go read some other comic if you don’t like this one.
Where did that remark come from?
Indeed Fairportfan. Random internet memes may be cringeworthy but there’s no need to come right out and tell someone to piss off over it.
Knowing my luck, though, somebody will likely now tell me that I not only misunderstood your comment, but also Jordinyc’s comment, Ladywolf’s comment, the definition of meme and of existence itself.
C’mon folks, have a beer and shake. 🙂 Quit dancing like that, I meant “shake hands”. 😛
Sorry. Another site i frequent has had seroius troll problems, and i can be a tad hyper-sensitive.
And all the comments i saw from jordinyc seemed to me a tad snide. So i over-reacted. Will try to not do so again…
Meanwhile: Are you offering to buy the beers, Paul, or am i expected to supply my own?
I’m sorry guys, really, I didn’t mean to piss anyone off. And I’ll get the second round at least. Another vote for “Big Bang”
Loved the Nile penguins…
Paul: Shake hands, maybe, but not the one in the cast… it’ll either hurt or itch!
Fairport: Trolls? would that be in one of the 910CMX forums?
Ganthan: Don’t worry, no one is going to tell you that you misunderstood a comment, or the definition of meme and of existence itself.
However, in the first sentence of your reply, you left out a comma, and in the second seOW!ow ow ouch owwie quit quit quit –!
Nah – “Pibgorn”.
It’s a good thing Amanda is in the hospital because it looks like her eyes could pop out at any given moment.
How the hell do you DO that?
Looks like another one of my posts was taken totally the wrong way again, it being gone and all. Sometimes I just don’t understand you folks.
Your post wasn’t removed by me and nothing is in the spam folder. Not sure why it didn’t post.
Oh, ok, my apologies to you, Paul and all others here. I guess I’m just being paranoid.
Hey, one of my posts had been pulled before… I think it might be a glitch (and not Bob’s, either 😀 )
So uh is Amanda in on the arm thing being on purpose or not? I can’t tell if Monica is saying it as an aside in the first panel or not
I love the expression on Amanda’s face in that last panel.
“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?”
Uh, What?
How in the world do you back over your…
Wait, I think I see Amanda’s gears grinding to a halt, too.
Well, my ex once parked his own car on his foot, so it can be done! The look on Amanda’s face is priceless 🙂
🙂 *gives a Phix cyber cookie*
ooooo…really??!!! YAY! Thank you thank you!! 🙂
Did you mean WoodGracie, rather than Phix?
*Gives a Phix cyber cookie “to” Woodgracie*
Oh. Dangerous hadn’t occurred to me. In fact, secrets we didn’t all ready know about didn’t occur to me.
I’m going to have to think about that for a while …
Doh! I read the first one as “Gives Phix a cyber cookie.”
Anyway, I think we know (in general terms) why Tina seemed so reluctant to go into the basement and perhaps why she was worried for Monica. It wasn’t the darkness — Monica just didn’t know where the light switch was at.

Whatever, Tina seemed to be upbeat until she heard what Monica said.
Tina just realized that what she had just said might seem a bit odd by M brushing past it like she did.
Oh, one of those awkward moments. I had considered that, but Tina seemed to just change subjects in the past.. Of course, she’s still a bit rattled and not at work.

I see I hit the wrong “Reply” link above.
We’ll get to the annex sooner or later…can’t wait!
You might have to. The diaries were first mentioned three years ago.
Another thought occurred to me: Did Tina just make up the story she just told Amanda about breaking her arm, but was too loopy (from the drugs) to realize how bad of a story it was until she said it? We’ll probably never know for sure.
At least Monica can use the “it was just the drugs talking” excuse for anything Tina says for a while now.
Reminds me of the “Twit of the Year” sketch from Monty Python. One contestant runs himself over with his own car, and although dead, he still has a chance to win.
Tina is so cute in a “not quite on this planet” kind of way.
Hilarious mental image! I’m going to need a diagram!
Amanda: **TILT!**
I don’t think too many of these whippersnappers understand what that means anymore (tragically).
Not in a Wii world, they don’t.
It PERFECTLY describes what’s going on in Amanda’s head right now, though.
To what “same page” is Tina referring? The page where they are all in agreement (now, anyway) that Amanda should not be privy to the supernatural goings on? Especially Phix’s library?
I’m pretty good at imagination, but I just can’t see how she ran over her wrist…..-squints-
It occurs to me that it’s much easier to do if the forearm is already detatched from the body. (But don’t call her a zombie)
Or. come to think, if you have two bodies…
or if you move the wheel with a wing while pushing the throttle with the tail when trying to examine under the car, but I recommend only doing it if you can take the pressure of the roll over or properly lift the car so the wheels spin free.
I just realised what the doll is for, and I gotta say it’s some of the more subtle pieces of plot development I’ve seen, not to mention a higher quality writing than I’ve seen outside a bestselling novel.
Perfect case of Fridge Logic.
I’m glad someone other than Pablo knows what it’s for.
The doll is for the spirits of the dead to inhabit.
In this case… TINA!
Could be, but it may be that it’s not a regular thing. Tina may not be there at the present time. Perhaps she is trying to lure Tina back with it To inhabit it, if only for a day.
This is true… but there’s also that Aztec side of the story as well.
Fridge logic. I had never heard of that before. Wonderful stuff.
Reading the “fridge logic” article. i have to say Hitchcock wasn’t as sneaky as he thought – the first time i saw “Vertigo” as an adult (previously saw it once on teevee at age twelve or so), i picked up on that one as soon as it happened.

Um … where’s the vote button?
I believe that the voting site is down as that is a hot-link.
Ah. I vote once each cycle, and popped in to do so, and the button had gone away.
If she was able to do that, she must have been beside herself! HA! HA! HA!
People, people, people; just enjoy the comic that good ol’ PW has provided for us. Turn off the brain and enjoy the rain…
I actually used to work with a lady that ran over herself. She had forgotten to put her car in park when she got out, tried to jump back in and got pulled under. She was a mess for like a month.
