Yes–but most of the shoppers are not there for the fun of it…

I’d say that pumpkin patch looks sincere enough for the Great Pumpkin to show up.

Nope. That patch isn’t sincere at all. Every one of those pumpkins are just sitting there, dying & will rot soon. None of them are attached to the vines from which pumpkins grow! Somebody deliberately left those pumpkins out there for some reason!

Few people know that pumpkins represent a dead child. Resting in the material substance of the gourd is a human soul that died too young. Pumpkin patches grow best where a child had died, the soul becoming especially fertile for pumpkins to grow.

If a pumpkin is picked & brought inside, cries can be heard on moonless nights from outside. These cries are never heard by more than one person at a time.

If an Exorcism is performed, the child’s soul is freed to find the afterlife & some psychics may even communicate with the child’s soul while it is still in residence. The expression of the haunted voice is timid & distant, as if trapped at the bottom of a well.

If carved into a Jack-o-Lantern, psychic contact reveals that the soul is damaged & if somehow resurrected may result in a child who is comatose, retarded or autistic. In all cases though, once a pumpkin dies & rots away, the child’s soul is released.

Above info is referenced & paraphrased from GURPS supplement rulebook, Creatures of the Night.
…Although it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if I ever find out that it’s already a part of some regional folklore, somewhere…
