You know, if I keep this up, I am going to prove myself to be an unendurable little type A prick …
I used to work in a newspaper, editing for spelling and grammar. Things sort of leap out at me.
Paul:, if you have the time, here’s a tip. Open a word processor and type in the dialog. Then run the spell checker. It won’t keep you from making an error in transcription, mind …
It might also make doing future transcription searches easier, if you were to reactivate some older search mechanisms that were on this site in the past… (HINT HINT)
There’s a lot going on here that we don’t know about yet. I’m really curious to see how this unfolds; after all, Jin’s mother has a lot of splainin’ to do. The whole calendar machine part was exciting but I find I have a lot more anticipation now for the aftermath.
A) a touching emotional moment with her long lost mother
B) a violently angry emotional moment with her long lost mother
C) completely loose what little mind she has left
D) All of the above
With which Fairport added “’E) All of the above, but in rotation…”
Did anyone notice that ‘Something Positive’ has a WS reference? The bag from the restaurant that reads ‘Woksi Square’? *sigh* This gets buried in a bunch of comments about today’s comic when what we really need is a forum so we could just use the thread about Wapsi sightings.
Did I mention that the loss of the forums really sucks? Or that the links to the left of the comic are still off the browser page on a netbook sized resolution? Hello, is this thing on? 🙁
I wonder if further down the line, Maya turns out to be the sugary sweet smart embarassing mom that all your friends love but you resent just a little for telling all your childhood mistakes?
Wait until Mom starts pulling out the photo albums of Jin as a youngster… or would she have to be satisfied with hieroglyphics on either a chunk of wall or papyrus. Maybe the Atlanteans/Lanthis people were far enough advanced they did have normal photo albums…
If it isn’t a manipulation, then it’s a test … or a trap. So just smile, nod your head, hand over your wallet, and repeat after me: “Yes, dear” … “You’re right” … “It’s all my fault” … “I’m sorry” … “I’ll try to do better” … say them in any order in response to even so much as a sigh from her. And never, ever assume to make a decision or have any fun without her, unless you enjoy sleeping alone.
I think the subject of the conversation was of little consequence. It was just talk until a mother and daughter who hadn’t seen each other for 80,000 years could relax enough to embrace.
I expect things to get rocky after this “Awwww” moment, though. Jin has spent almost 100,000 years and suffered enormous physical, mental and emotional pain (not to mention lost her humanity) trying to fix her mother’s mistakes. If she doesn’t have considerable anger and resentment over that she’s either a saint or she IS crazy.
And I’m STILL worried Jin hasn’t grasped that solving the Calendar Machine problem didn’t make her mortal again.
I personally feel that DeviantArt has become the myspace of the art world. I deactivated my account due to the messages from people who too easily took what I said out of context and warped it into a shit storm. I’ll be posting pics separate from the comic elsewhere on my own site from now on.
Well, of all those “social networking” sites that pop up like mushrooms all over the internet DeviantArt and last.fm actually seemed to me to be the only ones that actually have some practical use, but that might be different from a, errr, “heavy user”‘s point of view.
(Of course I only ever browse DA and just use last.fm to scrobble what I’m listening to – you’d have to point a gun at my head for me to touch the myface, spacebook, twitter, livejournal etc. “social” stuff without a ten foot pole…)
Now that they’re making all nice-nice, I’m waiting for the other sandal to drop. Always a misdirecting moment of heart-warmth, before the next chapter goes off the track.
Frankly, I am aghast that you would say such a thing! Given her love of Egyptian mythology and semi-precious stones, her first child’s name would have to be Set Amber!
So, I just spent the last couple days reading Wapsi Square from the beginning up to the current date and I have to say that I’m impressed. 🙂 You’ll definitely be added to the list of “check back daily or so” webcomics that I read. One thing I’m glad of, and I realize that it’s a matter of timing, is that everything (at least this particular storyline) was basically “wrapped up” by the time I got to it. There’ve been a few other webcomics that I lost interest in for one reason or another (lack of updates, not interesting, etc.) but I definitely enjoyed reading yours – and I’ll be looking forward to a lot more in the future! 🙂
You’re more than welcome. My only real “complaint” would be the lack of color – however, the frequency with which you post updates is definitely more than enough to forgive the lack of color. 😉
Yeah, I noticed that when it took me almost three days to go through about nine years worth of back pages (I’m a fast reader.) Daily updates is an amazing trait for a webcomic and definitely one that’ll keep the readers coming back for more!
Now what happens once the immortal politicians *shudder* find out she’s back in town? Does that make Kulkulcan a plucked pigeon? And how big a squawk is he going to make? Who are the other immortals? Now that Jin’s rogue doubt demon’s gone, what’s left (besides vanity, fear, etc)? Is Monica’s Doubt gonna do temp work? I am so looking forward to the aftermath! Great story. And more Selenium, please.
Jin was in the room with the machine when her mom when she tried to destroy it. This made a connection with her and the machine each time it restarts. =)
OK so … soundtrack time, who else thinks Rose’s theme from Doctor Who fits this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFIiYYRehlQ If Wapsi Square becomes a movie or a TV show, Murray Gold absolutely HAS to do the soundtrack!
Love the expressions in the last frame!! dead on! Yay for them…for now! This is definitely going to get interesting!!
Thank you Paul for the pronounciation yesterday! I never would have guessed the “k” sound! =)
We all travel the road of life, that may be short or long.
They cheer us for the right and guide us away from wrong.
We know that in our family, there is always an ever-present song.
Though we miss them greatly… our mothers are never really gone
Yay!
Darn Right. YAY!
No squee?
But am quite glad to see the outcome. Are we missing part of the conversation or ?
And who is Kukuclan?
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/04142004/
…who looks remarkably a lot like Monica’s boss at the University Museum.
Just sayin’.
Wow, that was a LOOOONG time ago. I need to re-read the whole series one week or so…
Thanks!
He’s…. Norse? And wearing a boa? I think we all have a friend like that…
sigh

I like that idea! ^_^ I will give that a try! =) Thanks much!

Aw, gee!
There’s a lot going on here that we don’t know about yet. I’m really curious to see how this unfolds; after all, Jin’s mother has a lot of splainin’ to do. The whole calendar machine part was exciting but I find I have a lot more anticipation now for the aftermath.
To paraphrase Robert A. Heinlein, people are more interesting than events. The events are just the stage upon which the people act …
Daaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww, feel good moment.
So, when is Jin going to introduce Allen to her mother?
Hold on, I’m channeling fatuncle…
“Alan”.
Oh, and I forgot: 😉
“Does ‘anal-retentive’ have a hyphen?” (Mo, in Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For.
That was supposed to appear one post further down.
No. It has a colon.
No, it has a period. (i.e. ‘full stop’) 😛
I was going to add “anal-retentive” to my resume, but I had trouble squeezing it out …
This one made me smile!
I’m still thinking the Alan-introduction would be worth some chuckles 🙂
Good job on guessing the GLOMP, Farpointfan.
*taps foot*
Do we look that much alike? =P
No, sorry. 🙁 I didn’t look back to see who made the exact guess, and I just remembered FPF’s list.
List? Couldn’t find a list. Linky?
Grrr… It was Amethyst Shadow’s list here…
With which Fairport added “’E) All of the above, but in rotation…”
Dawwwwwwww! ^_^
*Whew!*
Still… lotsa explaining to do, lotsa catching up; going to be incredibly interesting!
But – What about Dietzel? (http://wapsisquare.com/comic/before-you-can/) – that look on his face…
The “aftermath” I want to see is Shelly explaining what happened to her tattoo.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Yaaaayyyyyyyy!!! Finally!

And what’s worse is that we can’t edit our comments when we screw up and make spelling misteaks. DOH!
i know that the link is off the page, but there’s not much I can do about it right now without moving everything around. =(
YAAAAY!
Aaaaaaand there it is!! ^_^ So sweet!!
ok… off topic and a little bit of a plug, but i thought that some might find this interesting…
over at somethingpositive.net today, one of the characters is bringing lunch to another. on the bag is the name of the restraunt, “Woksi Square”.
when i saw it i immediatly thought about Wapsi Square.
Our flying cat just noticed that a few posts back.

Waitaminnit … mother and daughter are bonding over their mutual ability to manipulate powerful males? And this is an “Awwww…” moment for Wapsi fans?
Gack.
It’s an “awwe” moment because after 1450 X 56 years, they finally get to see one another again.
And hell, manipulating males isn’t hard.
Believe me, i am one.
Ah yes. Anytime you wonder what a woman is up to, just stop and think for a moment … what is she trying to manipulate me into doing now?
If it isn’t a manipulation, then it’s a test … or a trap. So just smile, nod your head, hand over your wallet, and repeat after me: “Yes, dear” … “You’re right” … “It’s all my fault” … “I’m sorry” … “I’ll try to do better” … say them in any order in response to even so much as a sigh from her. Ummm… if I may ask – what happened to your DeviantArt site, Pablo? All it says is that you deactivated your account…
I personally feel that DeviantArt has become the myspace of the art world. I deactivated my account due to the messages from people who too easily took what I said out of context and warped it into a shit storm. I’ll be posting pics separate from the comic elsewhere on my own site from now on.
Condolences and congratulations! I look forward to seeing even more artsy goodness!

spacebook appeals to my geeky side in wanting to create a ‘captians log’ insted of a diary/journal 😀
Do like cafe world on facebook tho 😀 and ive found their version of viva pinata on it also so i is happy with it 😀
Now that they’re making all nice-nice, I’m waiting for the other sandal to drop. Always a misdirecting moment of heart-warmth, before the next chapter goes off the track.
Heh. Mom’s May. Daughter’s Jin. If it was possible for Jin to have a kid, would she be Jolie?
Frankly, I am aghast that you would say such a thing! Given her love of Egyptian mythology and semi-precious stones, her first child’s name would have to be Set Amber!

Of course… Now I need to find a petite, busty Latina with lengüeta monstruosa all of my own. :\
Paul’s rock solid with his updates too! <3 !!!
Yeah, I noticed that when it took me almost three days to go through about nine years worth of back pages (I’m a fast reader.) Daily updates is an amazing trait for a webcomic and definitely one that’ll keep the readers coming back for more!
Agree with previous poster. I got sucked in and have now caught up 🙂 I really enjoy the comic! keep up the good work!

Something I just realized. How did Jin remeber the resets? The immortal politicians, Brandy, and Bud didn’t remember the resets. Did I miss something?
Jin was in the room with the machine when her mom when she tried to destroy it. This made a connection with her and the machine each time it restarts. =)

AW!
I see several individual Daws but no group one yet, so say it with me.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
I just gotta join in…
D’aaaaaawwwwwwww! Yay for Jin and Maya!
…and this was the moment it was all about. The reunion of mother and daughter… everything else is just side effects.
Been waiting for this hug for 82 thousand years and change…
While happy for Jin and May I am bummed that neither Bud or Brandy can ever have such a reunion 🙁
I think I’d make that hug last a few hours at least.
